History of Boy Bands

A cappella groups and barbershop quartets of the ‘40s and ‘50s laid the foundation for the future of boy bands. These all-male groups sang aesthetically crafted four-part harmonies in the realms of doo wop music. While majority of doo-wop groups sang about different aspects of love, certain groups highlighted dark aspects of life in a humorous way through their lyrics. A number of African American vocal groups performed intricate vocal harmonies that later become a signature style with mainstream R&B groups.

One of the early examples of boy bands was jazz vocal group The Ink Spots. This band mesmerized audiences with their style of ballads. Members of barbershop quartets and vocal groups would hone their vocal skills singing in their respective church choirs. Vocal groups in the early decades often performed in front of small audiences at church events and small social gatherings before hitting the big stage.
