Gaston in "The Other Story" - Another POV (Point Of View)
Gaston from “The Beauty and The Beast” can be categorized as “Not a Villain” but a guy who was at the wrong place at the wrong time or at least a misguided character. Put him in another Scenario and I am sure he would have “Rescued the Princess”, BAM, Thank You Thank You. I am out. Kidding. On a serious note, when you watch Beauty and the Beast in the future keep an out for him, and understand that he is not “the man that made the situation bad”
Conclusion to Gaston's Character Specs: I am "Bad"? So will you Hate Me?
Okay Lets Get Serious: Why would someone consider Gaston of the "Beauty and The Beast" a Good Guy/Anti-Hero?
So I read this list on one of the best cartoon Villains ever and the list was great and I liked the fact that the person shaded some light on the Villains. I agree with all this but I would have to politely disagree on Gaston and Maleficent been a Villain (They are one of the best I agree but Villains, no, they can't be technically called a "Villain"). Gaston in particular and I have a very strong argument for this.
Why you say? I will shade some light on why this is so, this light would make you look at him very differently (you know the sort of, “I didn’t realize this until you pointed it out” scenario). You ready? Okay here we go:
The obvious “Hero” franchise cartoony look Gaston seems to ooze: Gaston is handsome, strong, a ladies man, and the Peoples choice. He has all the manliest manly features any main Protagonists would like to have whilst rocking Ponytail. I mean who could pull that off? Who could rock a girlish Pony Tail in an 18th Century “Noir’ish” period and make your Enemies fear you whilst you smile and act all jolly?
Gaston Seems To Have "Hero" Features
Look, at his muscles, look at me, look at his muscles again and then back to me… he has never hit Belle. Has that hit you hard enough? If Beast almost had, why doesn’t Gaston do even worse? I mean despite all Gastons macho muscles and Villainous attitude why hasn’t he laid a hand on Belle? Isn’t he the Villain of the Story?
Look, at his muscles, look at me, look at his muscles again and then back to me… he has never hit Belle
“Kill the Beast Get the Girl”: That is what every Hero has been trying to do. Gaston knew nothing about Beasts past, but that was what he was supposed to do as a man. That is what he was supposed to do. What? You think he would have let Belle suffer under the Beast? No, he thought, “I am going to go rescue this girl that I have feelings for despite all that is going to happen”. I see a softer side to him, he didn’t have to go help her, he didn’t.
"Kill the Beast Get the Girl" Isn't that what Heroes Do?
Gaston tried to rescue Belle from the Beast. I mean what Villain in his right mind does that? Rescue someone from a Beast? I mean if Gaston was really heartless, then he would have just hooked up with some other hottie and made a life with her, but no he didn’t, using his Invisible 'look' of “I don’t Care about Her”, he still went ahead and summoned the whole Village to rescue her. No one would go that far. Have you watched Dracula? From it you would learn that, 1, psyching up a mob to kill the "Monster" is not easy, and 2, convincing yourself if it is worth it is another story.
Real Villains Live & Let Live and then Move on. "Rescue" is not a Word in their Dictionary But look what he did He rallied the Village to Rescue Her
Alternate Reality - Beauty and the Beast
Gaston didn’t get himself a Harem like all the Evil Villains do. No he didn’t even cheat on Belle. Ever seen another muscle heads home? They have women (or the likes) of all walks of life surround the chambers of their humble abode, lying down & around from whatever nasty thing they did last night. Why doesn’t Gaston do this? “Oh I love Belle”, Gaston would say with his macho voice. “No you Dummy!”, I scream at him, “No! You #@! You are a Villain! Stick to been Evil if you are going to be Evil! F*ù$ all you want because when stuff goes down nobody is going to feel a thing for you and you would still be considered one of the sickest Villains to have roamed this earth!”
Yes, Gaston could have had a Harem Ending. A rare ending indeed he just chose not to - Respect Though
Beauty and the Beast - The Bimbettes that liked Gaston a lot
Gaston protected Belle from the “Mean Girl” clichés of the Village, heck the whole town! What Villain in his right mind would do that? He would have dropped Belle, made fun of her and got with the 3 hotties, I mean, he is a Villain after all, don’t all Villains do this?
If it still doesn’t ring a bell in your head get this (didn’t mean that in a bad way):
- He chose the Nerdy, Quirky, Introverted, self-indulged Girl over the hottest Girls in the whole Village.
- He befriends her despite everyone in the Village thinking she is weird, she doesn't fit in and she is always reading.
- He became a dick for her. Imagine what happens behind closed doors and what people say about Gaston for defending Belle. "Silent Chivalry" my buam, Gaston just let be man she don't give a rats a$$ about what goes on in your life.
To hammer another point home, I got to thinking that Gaston was encouraging her. He allowed her to read her stuff by far, by not allowing others to mock her reading habits in front of him (look into it deeper). Had this been a real life scenario, Gaston would be a really great Guy. What baddy would allow his girlfriend time to study, shouldn’t he be like, “Stop reading Nerd!” or “Your ugly why don’t you change and become more like them?”, Gaston says this pointing to his admirers.
To those that still don't get it, he basically made fun of himself in front of the rest so that they wouldn't mock Belle and let her be. He Loved her, supported her hobby and didn't let up even though she dropped him in mud.
Gaston "Playing the Good Guy" - Been friendly with someone the whole Village/Town finds Weird
Of all the things that made him a mistaken Villain, the strongest point is where he dared to gather a mob to go rid of the Beast and rescue Belle. Guys can relate to this, you know how hard it is defending a Girl in front of your buddies? Lest the whole Country Club? Have you not heard of the rule where in order for the Girl to be accepted, she has to be the friend of the friends of the Guy otherwise she is not eligible? But no, this is not the case for Gaston, he pulls up his Alpha Male pants and silences the whole Club (women included) with his Testorone’s and comes to Belle’s defense, even turning the tide of the views to match his own. What Villain does this? Risk everything for a few should not be in his mentality.
Go Against the Whole Tavern like an "Alpha Male", Own em, then convince them that Belle's Father is not a "Madman" so that they could rescue Belle - Yep Villain
Gaston dared to silence the crowd that called Belle’s father a "madman" and also went as far to overturn the tide, prove the fathers point to rescue Belle, all this at the time owning the Country Club or Taverns men. To put it into real perspective, get this; had he failed to do so the consequences are:
- If Belle’s father continued to be called the Madman of the Country Club/Tavern then that story would escalate so far out to a point where he wouldn’t be able to clear it, think how hard it would be on him (you know, he would become the so called “Village Fool” that people make fun off, don’t give a job, mock, use in inside jokes, form fake legends about failures about etc… you get the gist) and to top it up his daughter would have been trapped in the Beasts place, this would have all happened had Gaston not acted.
- Had Gaston got into a falling with the wrong Tavern members he would have to fight the whole Tavern because apparently their views didn’t match. To get a good picture of the members of a Tavern go checkout “Tangled”s Tavern scene. If you saw it you know what it would be like going against the majority.
This is What Happens When You Go Against 'The Mighty Tavern'
What Happens When You Goto or Against 'The Mighty Tavern' - Tangled
Gaston was the reason why Belle uttered the final words that saved Beasts life and turned him back into a Prince. Look at Gaston, he is now not only a mistaken Villain but also a Martyr. Geez, this guy has had it bad, then to top it off people say a Villain has died. Yes, right Villain, ha ha, all intellects are happy (not :P).
His Final Sacrifice to the momentum of the Story Reminds me a lot of this Character from Naruto - Zabuza "The Demon of the Mist"
Reader Poll: Would Gaston be considered Good or Bad
Gaston from “The Beauty and The Beast” can be categorized as “Not a Villain” but a guy who was at the wrong place at the wrong time or at least a misguided character. Put him in another Scenario and I am sure he would have “Rescued the Princess”, BAM, Thank You Thank You. I am out.
Kidding. On a serious note, when you watch Beauty and the Beast in the future keep an out for him, and understand that he is not “the man that made the situation bad”, he is “the man that the situation mad bad”.
Conclusion to Gaston's Character Specs: I am "Bad"? So will you Hate Me?
Gaston is the Villain that has least been expanded on in all the franchises, so, if you now look into his actions a bit further you realize things that you didn't and you realize that little voice in the back of your head telling your that "this guy may not be what he was really portrayed to be" is sometimes right, the difference between us is that I wrote about it. I am not really a fan of Gaston, just pity him, it is something that has been on the back of my head (and a lot of other people's that I have seen in different forums) for a long time and thought it needs a little light. Remember if nobody writes his Story who will?
Watch the Video below to get more points on Gaston that I didn't mention in this post. (I urge you there is a lot more just watch the video)
