10 Quotes Marilyn Monroe Has Never Said and the Ones She Actually Said

Marilyn Monroe was an icon – and she still is ‘till these days. She is one of the great actresses in the 20th century, starring in films like The Seven Year Itch. But she is mostly known as a sex symbol. With her seductive smile and voluptuous figure, it’s not surprising. What’s more, there are lots of mysteries surrounding her death. Allegedly, she died of overdose at the age of 36 but is it really true? We’ll never know.

Even after she passed away, Marilyn Monroe never stopped being an icon. She is still widely known and admired around the world. People hang the portraits of her in their houses and she is an inspiration to a lot of people. We see lots of actresses wanting to be like her. We see lots of people still mourning after the death of the bombshell beauty.

Marilyn Monroe is so well-known yet she is a misunderstood person, funnily. Mostly everything she is rumored to be turned out to be a lie. Isn’t it sad? To be known by so many people but so misunderstood? She is not a dumb blonde – like everyone believed her to be. She is well-read, owning a huge collection of literary works. By the way, other than her being an icon, do you know what she’s popular for? Yes, her quotes. The ones you put as the caption of your Instagram picture. The ones posted all over Tumblr. Now, here’s the thing. Marilyn Monroe never said any of them.

Once upon a time, I found out that Marilyn Monroe never said half of quotes I see on the internet. Thankfully, I’ve never posted it. I remembered however that my friend posted it on her Instagram – probably to make it vintage-esque. So I went to her Instagram and commented that it’s not the real Marilyn’s quote, just out of spite. She was pretty pissed about it.

So, to save you from the embarrassment, let’s go through the 10 quotes Marilyn Monroe has never said.

The Fake Marilyn Quotes

Here are the 10 fake Marilyn Monroe quotes!

“Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world.”

— Bette Midler

Nope, she never actually said this. This is actually a quote by Bette Midler, an actress and a singer. It was found in a newspaper supplement called “Family Weekly” in January 1980. ‘The spike-heeled kind. They’re not always easy to find. I firmly believe that with the right footwear one can rule the world. Fortunately for the world, I have not found the correct footwear to achieve that goal. However, shoe stores across the nation can attest to my sincere and persistent efforts in that direction.’ Said Midler when asked what kind of shoes she prefers.

“To all the girls that think you’re fat because you’re not a size zero, you’re the beautiful one, its society who’s ugly.”

Marilyn has never said this. Size zero didn’t exist until 1966.

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person you are.”

— Kurt Cobain

Actually, this is a quote by Kurt Cobain. Now, that makes sense right because Kurt hated it when someone copied someone else?

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

It’s a quote from How I Met Your Mother.

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”

This is obviously fake. Marilyn Monroe is not likely to say this. First of all, she’s a perfectionist. She strives for perfection from herself. She wants to give the best she could. Secondly, she’s afraid one day she’d end up in a mental institution, considering the fact that her family had a history of mental illness. Lastly, there’s no source.

“I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.”

This is one of her popular quotes. However, she did not say this. It didn’t appear anyway in Marilyn’s lifetime. No source either.

“Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition.”

— Timothy Leary

Again, it’s not Marilyn who said this but Timothy Leary.

“I’m pretty but I’m not beautiful. I sin but I’m not the devil. I’m good but I’m not an angel.”

— Aloha Kimni

Its origin is actually a quote from Aloha Kimni which has been altered. Also, I feel like Marilyn is not the type of person who’d say she is pretty. She is classier than that!

“Nothing lasts forever, so live it up, drink it down, laugh it off, avoid the drama, take chances & never have regrets, because at one point everything you did was exactly what you wanted.”

Yeah, she didn’t say this one either. Words like drama wasn’t used at the time.

Wait, what's wrong with it?

Yeah, what’s wrong with it? At least it sounded cool, right? Wrong. These quotes she never even said didn’t portray her. Marilyn Monroe is a sophisticated and intelligent woman and these quotes didn’t reflect her a person. This is what you’d call a character assassination. Also, quotes that are wrongfully credited are not fair to their original owners such as Kurt Cobain and Better Midler. This is what Marilyn Monroe said regarding the issue:

“I refuse to let articles appear in movie magazines signed ‘By Marilyn Monroe’. I might never see that article and it might be okayed by someone in the studio. This is wrong, because when I was a little girl read signed stories in fan magazines and I believed every word the stars said in them. Then I’d try to model my life after the lives of the stars I read about. If I’m going to have that kind of influence, I want to be sure it’s because of something I’ve actually said or written.”

And also, this is her real quote:

“Please, quote me right.”

It’s funny how Marilyn Monroe has predicted that this sort of things were to happen in the future. Like Ella Fitzgerald said, she is a little ahead of her times and she doesn’t even know it! Well, anyway, we need to respect her wishes, right?

The Real Marilyn Monroe's Quotes

Here are the ones she actually said!

"Fear is stupid. So are regrets."

— Marilyn Monroe

There is a clear source! She said this in an interview for W.J Wetherby in 1960.

“Dogs never bite me. Just humans.”

— Marilyn Monroe

She said this in an interview with Truman Capote in 1955.

“I don’t want to make money, I just want to be wonderful.”

This quote is said in an interview for Pete Martin in 1956. However the real quote should be:

“I’m not interested in money. I just want to be wonderful!”

— Marilyn Monroe

“She was a girl who knew how to be happy even when she was sad. And that’s important—you know?”

— Marilyn Monroe

She really said this, referencing to the character Sadie Thompson from the play “RAIN” she desperately wanted to play.

“We are all of stars, and we deserve to twinkle.”

This is a misquoted version. The real one is down below. The quote’s origin is from a telegram dated June 13, 1962. Marilyn declined an invitation to a party by saying this:

"Unfortunately, I am involved in a freedom ride protesting the loss of the minority rights belonging to the few remaining earthbound stars. All we demanded was our right to twinkle.”

— Marilyn Monroe

So next time, don't get it wrong! Use the quotes she actually said if you wanted to use of her quotes! Let's respect Marilyn Monroe's wishes, shall we?
