We are used with Disturbing Films being splatter without any deeper meaning with them. But that is not always the case. In fact some of the most meaningful movies tend to be disturbing since they will dare to touch on subjects more conventional films will not. Here are 10 examples of Disturbing Films that are also very meaningful and deep.
10 - Se7en (1995)
Perhaps one of the most famous in this list, se7en is showing us how anyone can “Become wrath” under the right circumstances. The brutality of the "sins" are getting worst with time until it reaches one of the most iconic scenes in the cinema. So is the world worth fighting for ?
9- Climax (2018)
“Existence is a fleeting illusion". This film takes you into a ride of what it feel like to trip and to truly let go of all the fears, expectations and basically everything we view normal as a society. It starts slowly but don't get fooled, by the time it will reach its "climax" you will be insane. Be ready to feel what it is like to take LSD.
8 - Mother! (2017)
Filled with hidden symbol Mother! is the film to make you feel crazy as you try to figure out what is going on. Every piece of the puzzle means something, coming together to represent Religion and the Earth. Some people love it, some people hate it. The film doesn't usually get mix reaction. It is for sure not for everybody.
7 - Black Swan (2010)
A film with many meaning and different interpretations. How hard is it to let go of the perfection and your innocence? Will the "dark side" take you over if you don't do it in time? "I think everyone has a little black swan in them, it’s just a matter of when you let it out"
6 - Antichrist (2009)
Perhaps the most gruesome in the list most people dismiss it as a simply torture film. The film is meant to represent three stages: Grief, Pain and Despair. It represents our fear about evil and what a human is capable of once he has lost all hope. "You have to have the courage to to stay in situations that frightens you. And then you'll learn that fear isn't dangerous."
5- Rosemary's Baby(1968)
With zero gruesome scenes this film takes a complete different approach than the rest of the list. Roman Polanski is choosing to not put what would consider scary in the screen but instead letting it the imagination of the viewers. The film will make you feel like you are going complete crazy.
4 - The Seventh Seal (1957)
"And when the Lamb had opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour". Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece gives us one of the best films about life and our relationship with the inevitable death.
3 - A Clockwork Orange (1971)
“Is it better for a man to have chosen evil than to have good imposed upon him?” With some very disturbing scenes, this dystopian film touches some deep philosophical issues on humanity that will leave you wondering. Grab a glass of milk and prepare for an existential crisis.
2 - Requiem for a Dream (2000)
We can't talk about disturbing Films with meaning without Requiem for a Dream. The way the movie is shot from start to finish, the camera angles and the close ups are all there to give us a deep dive into the world of addiction, chasing dreams and what comes if we fail to archive them. Just the Score alone is enough to give you goosebumps. “I suspect there will never be a requiem for a dream, simply because it will destroy us before we have the opportunity to mourn it's passing.”
1 - Martyrs (2008)
We all want to know what's afterlife but how far would you go to find out? It is by far the most disturbing film I have ever watched. What makes it so unique is that it is as gruesome as it gets but at the time extremely deep separating it self from other typical torch porn films. It is very hard to watch and it will stay with you forever.
So how many of them have you watched and which one is your favorite? Do you have any more to recommend?
