About Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Secret World of Arrietty)

Within human society, there live borrowers who are human-like tiny creatures. Humans are unaware of their presence. Among the borrowers, there’s a 14-year-old Arrietty, who lives with her parents in a small space of a human garden. To ensure their survival, they secretly take items from the human household.

However, it’s impossible for a secret to remain concealed for so long. Shou, a 12-year-old boy, notices that some small things are missing in his home which makes him suspicious. In his quest, he comes across Arrietty and discovers the secret of Borrowers. But instead of shooing her away, he extends the hand of friendship and then, commences the start of a new weird friendship.

While Arrietty is aware that if her existence becomes known to humans, she and her family would be killed, but she is reluctant to break her precious friendship with Shou. What happens next, will her family run away or will humans accept the Borrowers into society? Karigurashi no Arrietty tells the wonderful tale of the human world through a small perception.

Chihiro’s parents begin to eat instantly while she walks the market. As dusk falls, strange things begin to manifest. Before she could ask her parents to go back, they turn into pigs and the whole market becomes lively with weird creatures. Chihiro, then, realizes that she has entered into the spirit world.

Uncertain of how to handle the situation, she confronts a boy named Haku who helps her get a job at the bathhouse. Now, she has to work continuously without stopping to get her life back to normal.

In the late 21st century, the year 2067, scientists conducted an experiment on the Earth’s gravity to harness unknown energy. The experiment failed miserably and the gravitational force got reversed, causing each and everything to start flying away from the land.

The story begins a few years later after the experiment. Patema is a valiant young girl, who lives in an underground civilization built on a network of tunnels. She is often found exploring these tunnels and is reprimanded for the same. One day she enters into the forbidden zone and accidentally drops into the bottomless pit when knocked by a strange creature.

She arrives in the totalitarian nation of Aiga. Aiga is an upside-down world, due to which she begins to fall towards the sky but is saved by Age, a young citizen of Aiga. Since Patema is one of the “Inverts”, she is seen as a sinner by the people of Aiga, but Age thinks differently. He vows to protect his new friend. Sakasama no Patema follows the journey of these two youngsters and how they try hard to overcome the differences so as to coexist.

Gin warns her never to come back again, but she doesn’t heed his words and promises to bring a gift next time. Meanwhile, she also realizes that she isn’t supposed to touch Gin or else he’d disappear. With time, they both become close friends and soon the romantic feelings start to stir up.

However, a long-lasting relationship between a human and a spirit is unrealistic. Hotaru is growing into a young teenage girl and lives in a city while Gin hardly seems to age and can’t leave the forest, so how these two will maintain this odd yet strong bond?

She tries to know him better and learns that he is not an actual student, in fact, he is not even a human. On the full moon night, he reveals his true identity to Hana as the last serving werewolf.

Despite knowing his truth, Hana’s love stays strong and they eventually start a family. Hana gives birth to two children, Ame and Yuki, who are half-human and half-wolf. Soon enough, Hana’s husband dies in a road accident while searching for food for their children. Devastated by the news and no one to console her, Hana tries to stay strong for her children and provide them the best nourishment possible.

Out of jealously, she curses Sophie to turn into an old woman, also restricting her from disclosing the fact that she’s been cursed.

Unable to work at her shop anymore, Sophie travels far away from her place and coincidently ends up in Howl’s moving castle. Nowhere else to go, Sophie sticks with Howl and his strange companions in the hope of returning back to normal.

Impressed by Marnie’s cheerful demeanor, Anna soon becomes her close friend and starts meeting her on regular nights. As the story progresses, it’s revealed there’s more to this strange girl that what appears to the eyes.
