Rahul is a movie addict who can never get enough of good films. His all time favorites are Inception, 12 Angry Men, and Scarface.

What Films Are Like Braveheart?

Braveheart is much more than just another medieval war film with epic battles and a flawed hero. Every war movie after that has taken a cue from it, borrowing its style and elegance. Movies like Gladiator, Troy and 300 are just a few examples of movies that took a leaf out of Braveheart’s book.

If you’re a fan, it’s only fitting that you’d be looking for more movies like Braveheart to quench your thirst for some epic battles. Let’s take a look.

When a Roman general is betrayed by his own Emperor and relegated to fighting in the arena as a gladiator, he comes to Rome to avenge the death of his family. Gradually, he starts winning over the crowd with his vast array of deadly fighting skills, thus getting a hold of him. The emperor wants him dead before he can strike back. The cat and mouse game finally brings them close to the fatal face off. Can Maximus emerge victorious against all the odds?

The story is expertly woven, taking the first few minutes to develop its characters and careful changing its gears as and when needed. From the jaw-dropping battle scenes to tear-jerking moments; everything is perfectly done. Overall, Gladiator is one of the best movies like Braveheart, combining violence with a beautiful story that keeps you hooked until credits roll.

Kingdom of Heaven

Kingdom of Heaven takes place during the crusades of 12th century, chronicling a blacksmith’s journey to Jerusalem as he strives to find his identity and purpose. He’s lost everything; his family and now, his faith. Amidst the chaos and despair, he falls in love and eventually defends the city and its people against staggering odds.

I thought that the way Christianity and Islam were portrayed in the movie is very balanced and fair. It’s secular in every way, never taking one side over the other. The sets and costumes are very representative of 12th century’s Jerusalem, immersing you in its world for the enteritis of the movie. This is one of those war movies whose epic battles moments would stay with you for a very long time.

300 – One of the best war movies like Braveheart

300 takes us back to 480BC – the time when Persians were conquering everything in their way. Spartans, however, refused to give in to the threats. Left with no choice, the Persian king Xerxes led an army of some 100,000 men against a force of just 300 Spartans, which proved to be a very famous last stand in the books of history. These few men slaughtered waves after waves of Persians while suffering a very few causalities.

300 is much more than a source of entertainment for few minutes. It’s a fact-based story of sacrifice of a few brave men, who fought for their country and pride – one that would inspire you.

It’s elegant in its own way, making every cling of swords fascinating to watch. Knowing the fate of Spartans already, you’d still root for them, hoping that they’d be able to fend off a huge army.

All in all, 300 is one of the best medieval war movies like Braveheart that’d keep you on the edge of your seat until credits roll.

Dances With Wolves

The plot revolves around a war hero, who accidently finds himself on the winning side during the civil war. He asks for a position on a remote outpost and gets it, only to find out that he’s all alone out there. Pretty soon, though, he learns that he’s not alone. If he wants to survive, he’d have to earn the respect and trust of the locals.

With army advancing on the pains, he is forced to make a decision pretty soon that would change the fate of the locals.

Some people say that it’s pretty long. I can say for sure that they’ve never sat through movies like Braveheart and The Godfather. Yes, it’s pretty long. It’s far from boring, though.

Once it’s done with building the suspense and characters, it never lets up. Overall, a beautifully shot movie with a character-centric story that would blow you away.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Robin Hood and his companion are captured by Turks. Luckily, they manage to escape back to England. When Robin finds out that his father has been murdered by a corrupt sheriff of Nottingham, he deices to take revenge and end the tyranny in his own way.

Out of all the movies made about Hood, this one is the best you’re going to get. Granted, it has its fair share of flaws, but it’s pretty enjoyable nonetheless. If you’re into movies like Braveheart, I can’t see any reason why you wouldn’t like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

The Mayan kingdom is in its last days. Their rulers believe that human sacrifices are a must to bring back the good days. When a man is chosen for the sacrifice, he manages to flee and avoid his fate, fighting to save himself and his family. How far would he go?

The family drama starts off pretty slowly, building the pace in the beginning and changing the gears at the right moments. Once everything is set up, though, it never lets up. With its breathless pacing, it often can be an overwhelming experience.

If you’re looking for a breathtaking movie like Braveheart, Apocalypto should be your best bet.

King Arthur

The film takes us back to 400 AD - the time when Roman Empire, spanning all across the world, finally collapsed. The plot revolves around King Arthur and the Knights, who’re on their last mission before they are finally free to go home.

Movies based on Arthur have focused mainly on the mystical elements. “King Arthur”, however, changes that with more emphasis on presenting a realistic tale.

Although the original version is not bad by any means, I’d whole-heartedly recommend the director cut. There is just so much more to see in it. Some added battle scenes, dialogues and a better alternate ending make it far better than the original.

All in all, King Arthur is an underrated movie that deserves to get more attention for a beautiful, character-driven story.

Ben Hur (1959) - A classic movie like Braveheart

The story takes us back to the beginning of the 1st century, mainly focusing on a Jewish prince in Jerusalem. When he is betrayed by one of his own and forced into slavery, he vows to come back for revenge.

More than 50 years since its release, Ben Hur remains one of the finest work of art the movie industry has ever seen. It’s one of those rare gems that have withstood the test of time.

Go watch it. Yes, it’s well over three hours long, but those 212 minutes will be spent watching one of the best movies like Braveheart.

The plot is pretty simple. It takes us back to year1215; where a small group of rebels are fighting for freedom and to end the tyranny of King John.

Despite being an indie movie, it has all the characteristics of a Hollywood blockbuster, giving them a run for their money. All the gory violent scenes and blood splattering all across the floor; it’s more than enough to make even the strongest of us wince. It’s impressive how a movie of this scale could be made with a measly budget of $25 million – something that’s more like a pocket change for most Hollywood movies these days.

The 13th century England looks fascinating and believable, immersing you in its world for a while. The action on the ground feels real. Yes, it scarifies the style in favor of realism, but it ends up delivering an authentic experience that would keep you hooked till the end.

If you’re looking for some good, underrated movies like Braveheart, you must give Ironclad a go.

Rome has been struck by turmoil, seeing 5 emperor deaths in last 5 years. It can’t afford another one. The story takes place in 460 A.D. revolving around the young Romulus Augustus Caesar, who plans to escape the city with the help of an Indian-born warrior and a Roman commander.

If you’re expecting it to be a gore-fest, it’s going to be disappointing. a character driven story that takes it sweet time in building the pace. Once everything is set up, though, it never lets up.

Overall, The Last Legion is a light-hearted action movie – the kind teenagers and young adults would love. It does what it says without any nudity or blood.

The plot revolves around a group of Roman soldiers, who get trapped behind the enemy lines after a guerrilla attack by the enemies. With their lives on stake, they fight with all their might and tactics to stay alive.

When we talk about great medieval movies, Braveheart, Gladiator, 300 and a few handfuls of others come to mind. You wouldn’t find a movie like Centurion mentioned amongst them. It’s a beautifully shot story with its own elegance and style.

The battles feel real, giving you a good idea of what it must have been like to fight back then. From the clings of swords to the sight of blood splattering all across the ground, there is a lot of feast your eyes upon.

If you’re looking for some underrated movies like Braveheart, you should give Centurion a go.

The Last of the Mohicans - An amazing movie like Braveheart

Mohicans, the last Native American tribe, is living in peace with others. When they’re tasked with protecting a British Colonel’s daughters, they find themselves caught in a gruesome war – something they want nothing to do with. Will they succeed in their mission against staggering odds?

The Last of the Mohicans is pretty accurate when it comes to sticking to history, reimagining America in its infancy during the Indian and French war pretty accurately. All in all, it’s a great movie with a lot offer. Action, deaths, blood, romance and some fascinating drama – it has all the ingredients you look for in a movie like Braveheart.

The New World

The New World is one of those movies that you’d either love with all your heart or loathe with passion. I don’t think there is any middle ground here. If can appreciate a good plot that takes it time in developing its characters, you’d love what it has to offer.

The movie takes place in year 1607, revolving around the English exploration of Virginia. It’s better if you don’t know much about the plot. Believe me; it’s a better experience if you don’t know anything beforehand.

Honorable mentions – Other movies like Braveheart

If you’re looking for some more movies, you should try 13th Warrior, Alexander, Rob Roy, The Eagle and The Patriot. Did I miss out on a really good movie? Let me know in the comments section, and I’d be happy to include it in the list.

I agree with most of your list. The remake of Ben Hur was not as well done as the old one starring Charlton Heston. The first one was more like Braveheart in my opinion. Fun article!

Anyone who hasn't seen all, or at least most, of the movies you mentioned, doesn't know what they are missing. I have watched "Braveheart" so many times that I can just about quote all of the dialogue by heart. Definitely one of my favorites, as well as "Dances With Wolves." I haven't seen "The New World" but will watch it because I adore Colin Ferrell. Great suggestions.

Mister Terrific from United States on April 08, 2017:

Centurion is like a B-movie version of "Gladiator". I actually enjoyed it a lot more the second time I watched it.
