Our Favorite Picture Books on Washington

Larry Gets Lost in Seattle by John Skewes is a cute book about a dog who gets lost in Seattle and of course visits all the main attractions of the city including the Space Needle, art museum, Pike Place Market, Olympic Sculpture Park, and more.

Celebrating Washington State: 50 States to Celebrate (Green Light Readers Level 3) by Marion Dane Bauer follows a teacher as he visits the main sites of the state. This is great because it covers the entire state (not just Seattle). I also love that it is an easy reader book, so I used it as a phonics reader for one of my children.

Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest by Gerald McDermott is a great trickster tale that emphasizes the Native American heritage of the area. It includes illustrations that look like totem pole characters.

Washington's Sights and Symbols (Kid's Guide to Drawing America) by Katt Lynn is part of a wonderful series that combines state geography with art. Even my 6 year old could follow the drawing directions and my 9 year old created some impressive drawings while learning more about Washington state.

Sockeye's Journey Home: The Story of a Pacific Salmon - a Smithsonian Oceanic Collection Book by Barbara Gaines was our favorite picture book on the life cycle of salmon.

We also enjoyed reading Orca Song by Michael Armour, Three Bears of the Pacific Northwest by Richard Lee Vaughan, Salt & Pepper at the Pike Place Market by Carol A Losi, and Volcano: The Eruption and Healing of Mount St. Helens by Patricia Lauber.

Our Favorite Board Books for Preschoolers, Toddlers, and Babies

Our favorite board books that focus on the sites and symbols of Washington include Good Night Washington State (Good Night Our World) Board book by Adam Gamble (which has delightful illustrations and includes the animals and wonders that make Washington special such as Mount Rainier, Seattle's Space Needle, Pike Place Market, and more), Where Do I Sleep?: A Pacific Northwest Lullaby by Jennifer Blomgren (a cute book including the various animals of the area), Good Night Seattle (Good Night Our World) Board book by Jay Steere (showing the main sites of Seattle), Larry Loves Seattle!: A Larry Gets Lost Book Board book by John Skewes (also showing the main sites of Seattle...and featuring a dog), Count To Sleep Seattle Board book by Adam Gamble (a very simple counting book that includes drawings of the main sites of Seattle), A Day at the Market Board book by Sara Anderson (going through what you'd see at Seattle's Pike Place Market), and O is for Orca: An Alphabet Book by Andrea Helman (with photographs related to what can be found in nature in the area).

Our Only May Amelia by Jennifer L. Holm - Image is from amazon.com.
