South Carolina's Flag and State Quarter

South Carolina's flag has a long history dating back to South Carolina's colonial period. It began as a blue flag with a crescent and was designed in 1775 by Colonel William Moultrie to be used by the South Carolina troops during the American War for Independence. It was blue because the soldiers uniforms were blue, and the crescent came from the silver crescent some of the soldiers wore on the front of their caps. In 1861 the palmetto was added to the flag in remembrance of the palmettos logs that Moultrie and his men had laid over the sand walls of the fortress on Sullivan's Island. They survived the British cannonballs mainly because the palmettos sponginess.

The state quarter of South Carolina features the state symbols. The state bird (Carolina wren) is perched atop the state flower (yellow jessamine). The state tree (cabbage palmetto) sits in front of the state outline. It also includes the words, "The Palmetto State."
