Letter I: Alphabet Activities for Kids
Fun With the Letter I!
Today we're talking about the letter I! All of the crafts, activities, and snacks we made were all centered around letter recognition for the letter I.
We did lots of worksheets with insects, instruments, and ice cream, plus paper crafts with inchworms and islands, marshmallow igloos, color matching games, and more!
There are plenty of links for free worksheets, coloring pages, and paper games. Also, there are a bunch of short videos to watch that are all about the letter I.
Alphabet Food and Snacks - Fun ways to incorporate the letter I into mealtime! Serve them all and let your kids find the I, or separate them out ahead of time.
Alphabet Activites Binder
As usually, our alphabet activities begin with my daughter pasting the letter we're studying, in this case the letter I, into her binder. We then use the binder to store her worksheets and crafts.
Letter Sorting: I is for Inchworms
I chose inchworms for our paper craft of sorting uppercase and lowercase letters. These were hand cut from construction paper, with the big and little Is printed on construction paper and then cut out, too.
I gave all these pieces to my daughter to glue down, and also gave her some googly eyes to give some personality to the inchworms.
I is for Island
My kids really enjoyed this. (The 16-month-old was eager to help her big sister with the sand!)
We covered the uppercase I with glue and they sprinkled on sand that I picked up in the craft section of the dollar store ... mostly because we only have dirt outside in the yard - no sand, or I would have used that.
I had pre-cut some tiny palm trees, which my daughter glued on with white glue after we shook off all the extra sand. She also added trees to the ocean, not just the I island, but that's okay.
I is for Insects
We already had some foam stickers in the shape of insects, so we used them for this project, though you could use any type of sticker. Or draw your own. These foam stickers were purchased at the dollar store, but there are links to some available online below if you'd like to use some for your project.

I is for Instruments
Just like the insects above, I already had these foam stickers that I'd previously purchased at the dollar store, but you can use just about anything (stickers, magazine clipping, etc.) to fill your I.

I is for Ice Cream Color Matching
This is a great (free) game I found online. It's color matching with ice cream cones - always fun, and perfect for Letter I Day. The author suggests cutting out the cones, which I didn't do, and also laminating them, which I didn't do either, mostly because I like having the large background for the pieces and because I haven't yet invested in a laminating machine. It's on the to do list.
Either way, the game is cute, and my girls like it. Find it at busy little bugs.
I is for Insect Shadow Matching
Another fun (and free) game is this shadow matching printable with insects. This photo shows a little of how my printer needed to have some of the colors replaced. This isn't something that bothers my girls, however, so we tend to use the cartridges as long as we can. :)

I is for Idaho, Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana
I had my daughter find and color in the four states that start with I. Then we colored in the rest of the map in different colors. And I say "we" because she scribbled over the rest quickly and my ocd didn't let me leave it looking "unfinished." But at least she did the I states. What can I say? Three-year-olds have short attention spans.

Want to look at more than just America? There are plenty of countries out there that start with the letter I, like: Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, and Italy. There are lots of coloring pages if you'd like to color in a world map, too. For example: this world map coloring page.
Letter I Crackers
I is for Ice Cream Chalk
I found this ice cream shaped chalk at both the dollar store and Walmart. Either way, couldn't pass up ice cream shaped chalk for a dollar! So we used it to draw some Is on the driveway.
Making the Letter I with Sticks
We also made some Is on the back patio with sticks we found, and then traced them in chalk to highlight the shape of the capital and lowercase Is.
I is for Igloo
One project we, uh, attempted, was to make a marshmallow igloo. Started out with a styrofoam ball I cut in half with a large knife, drizzled white glue all over it, and started layering the candy.
Problem was, the marshmallows just weren't sticking with the white glue. Now, if I was really committed, I'm certain I could have found another method that would have worked better, but, really, my girls were much more interested in eating the marshmallows anyway.
So we abandoned our 3D igloo and colored a picture of Elmo standing next to an igloo instead.
Letter I Collage
Our letter I collage included islands, ivy, ice cream, an inchworm, insects, and a bunch of letter Is.
Okay, the "islands" were beaches, and the inchworm was really a plush snake (didn't fool my daughter for a second!), but we had to improvise a little. It's close enough.
