The Hoot story takes place in Coconut Cove, Florida, where a little boy named Roy and his two new friends attempt to stop the construction of a pancake house which if built, would wipe out a whole colony of burrowing owls who live on the site. The book has a variety of themes that make for good lessons, ranging from growing up, friendship, corruption, integrity, being pro-active, and parental love. All of which are learned as the main character goes through various experiences and adventures to arrive a them. The Hoot book won a Newbery Honor award in 2003, which is an award that is given to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

According to the author, the Hoot Lesson Plans will help you use HOOT, by Carl Hiaasen, as a complete teaching unit that spans across 30 days. There are journal prompts, worksheets, and cross-curricular exercises to help you set up and conduct classes around the HOOT novel. Each day includes a vocabulary development section, a standards-based activity, and a journal/reflection section. There is flexibility to send some activities home, or extend the final project to last an entire semester. These reading lesson plans for Hoot have been adapted from classroom-tested curriculum, and allows for differentiation within classes, or between grade levels.
