Homemade Black Powder Fuse for Smoke Grenades
If you are having a hard time obtaining fuses for your homemade smoke grenades, then the solution is very simple.
Make your own homemade fuse.
Fuses are the most important part of creating any smoke bomb or firework. Without a fuse, nothing can happen.
The following methods are very safe and cheap ways to ensure that your smoke bombs do what they are supposed to.
These homemade fuses work great in any homemade smoke grenade and are very reliable.
For any Canadian visitors to this page, or anyone else who may have a hard time obtaining the materials to make a black powder fuse, I have included four videos to make other types of fuses made from materials you can get off the shelf.
These are great alternatives as obtaining black powder in Canada can be difficult.

This is a great back-up fuse made from materials that are more readily available.
Black Powder Fuse Materials - What you will need to make a homemade fuse
- Black powder
- 2 bowls
- Paper towel
Homemade Black Powder Fuse
Cut your string into lengths that you need your homemade fuse to be and soak them in a bowl of warm water. I recommend cutting three to four inch pieces. Allow the string to soak for a few minutes in the water so that it becomes completely saturated.
In the second bowl you will now add a generous portion of black-powder. Since you do not need very much black-powder, it is unlikely that are going to need any special permit or license to make the purchase.
After the string has soaked for few minutes, remove it from the water and gently shake off any excess water that still remains. You want it soaked, but not dripping.
Transfer the string to the black-powder bowl. Using your dry hand, scoop the powder so that it has completely buried the string. Press the black-powder further into the string by gently squeezing the string and powder in your hand.
Once the string has been completely coated, lift the string out of the black-powder. Stretch it out, and place it on your paper towel.
This homemade fuse requires a minimum of six hours to dry, but I recommend leaving it for a full twenty-four hours for best outcome. Once the string has dried, the black powder will remain coated to the outside, giving you a very safe and reliable fuse for your homemade smoke bombs.
