Dinosaurs for Children: The Museum of Ancient Life

Mother of 2 daughters and grandmother of 7, I strive daily to achieve an optimum level of health and happiness. Life is all about balance.

We were greeted at the entrance to the museum by dinosaurs known as Othnielia.

A Dinosaur Museum for Children

The Museum of Ancient Life at Lehi, Utah had my husband and I captivated with its stunning displays of ancient life and vast collection of dinosaur artifacts.

What truly fascinated us throughout our visit was this museum's interactive play stations for children. These little play stops for kids are one of the most delightful features of this dinosaur museum.

Let's face facts even if the subject matter is on one of their favourite topics kid's can get pretty bored touring a historical site where they must be very careful not to touch the displays. Fortunately this dinosaur museum works the kid factor into its tour. Kids are encouraged to play.

The History Displayed Throughout the Museum is Breathtaking

We Were Greeted by Daniel

Daniel is one of the hosts at the Museum of Ancient Life and he was a real super sweetheart. He provided us with information on the museum and on the artifacts that it contains within it. He certainly knew a lot about dinosaurs and he was excellent at helping us out with our many questions.

Daniel also made sure that we set out on the correct pathway into the museum and greeted us once again at the end of our journey. Thanks Daniel. You made our trip to this history rich museum a real pleasure.

This museum of ancient history is a must see for adults as well as kids.

Beside Each Display is a Plaque Explaining it

Brachiosaurus is one of the largest dinosaurs to have roamed our Earth many years ago and its skeletal remains have been found in the United States in Utah, Wyoming, Oaklahoma, and Colorado.

Some dinosaurs are extra large and it is amazing to see such gigantic creatures so close up and personal.

Another that is categorized as a Sauropoda dinosaur is a huge creature believed to be a grazer who foraged in the tall trees for its food supply.

There is a Children's Play Stop That is a 'Design a Dinosaur' Area

At this interactive play station in the museum children find a variety of dinosaur body parts and are encouraged to stop and build themselves a dinosaur. For children who have been patiently behaving themselves on their trek through the "Do Not Touch" dinosaur displays within the museum these play stations are so vitally important. The stop is a reward for their good behaviour and a chance to relax and just let go of some of that pent up energy which they have been keeping in check. The children's play stops are the feature of this museum that most impressed me.

Silly me I didn't pull out my camera to take pictures of the earlier play stations. One noteworthy play stop though was a "Color The Dinosaur" interactive screen section. Kids turn a crank to change a dinosaurs color to one which they think he might have had before his extinction. Turns out that scientists really do just guess at what color dinosaurs were. Huh? Before I visited the museum I had no idea that no one knew what color dinosaurs actually were?

Crocodiles Have Been Around Since Ancient Times

Crocodiles Are a Super Survival Species

They have survived where other species were not able. They have been around since prehistoric times and did you know that Crocodiles still look virtually the same as their dinosaur ancestors did? I guess you don't mess with a design that seems to be working.

The Dinosaur Head Games Children's Game is so Fun

At the museum's head games play stop exhibit kids get to guess which skull belongs to which animal or dinosaur. The answers are hidden underneath the picture tiles of the various animals.

I really enjoyed this interactive dinosaur play stop at the museum and I just happened to notice that Paul had fun at this one too. (Guess the museum fun stops were not designed just for little kids? Big kids can have fun there too.) This is one vacation destination that truly is a must see tourist stop for families with children.

Another Interactive Children's Stop is the Scale (Gasp!)

At this stop in the museum children (as well as adults) have the opportunity to weigh in and see which dinosaur comes closest to them in weight.

This scale looks just like a freight scale except that it has pictures of dinosaurs and their weights shown at the top of the scale.

Paul and I have both put on a few pounds over the past few years so we decided that we would skip this interactive museum play station and let the kids enjoy it instead.

The Museum's Computer Learning Center for Kids

I loved the children's play stations located strategically throughout the Museum of Ancient Life. These stations are the ideal place for children to stop, and release their creative energies, and really do make the process of learning from museums a fun experience for kids.

The kid friendly theme of this museum is so very exciting. So if you want to plan a fun dinosaur theme family vacation, considering visiting the Museum of Ancient Life in Lehi, Utah, it is definitely an adventure too good to miss.

Have You and Your Children Visited a Museum?

Catherine Giordano from Orlando Florida on August 02, 2017:

Dinosaurs aren't just for children. I love museum exhibits featuring dinosaurs. I live in Orlando, at the Orlando Science Museum has a great permanent exhibit of dinosaurs. I never miss a chance to visit. I'm glad that there so many dinosaur fossils because that means science museums in every city can have their own exhibit.

Nathalie Roy from France (Canadian expat) on March 23, 2013:

Kids sure will enjoy this Museum filled with dinos!

Great photos! I've never been to Utah, but I would love to visit the Ancient Life Dinosaur Museum, and especially like the way the fossils are displayed in life-like situations rather than in glass cases.
