Why Do I Only Have One Dimple?

Dimples. You either love them or you hate them. Those naturally blessed with dimples may have two in their cheeks or simply one; it could even be on your chin.

The presence of dimples in babies right through to adults, is considered to be 'cute', any many women are classified as glamorous simply because of their dimples, particularly when they are smiling.

People who are not born with dimples often seek out alternative measures to acquire them. Not surprisingly, there cosmetic procedures available to achieve this look, and non invasive exercises that one can do, albeit temporary.

Have you ever wondered why some people only have one dimple and not two?

What Is A Dimple?

Dimples are believed to be an inherited facial feature, that are either permanently present on one's cheeks or chin, or appear temporarily while a person speaks or smiles. Anatomically, dimples are formed when one of your facial muscles is shorter than normal and it pulls on your skin and forms the indentation in your skin.

Sometimes, dimples are also caused due to the presence of excessive fat on your face. In this instance, these dimples are not permanent.
Dimples are also linked with youth. Some babies and children have dimples but they disappear when they grow old as their facial muscles develop.

Dimples are usually considered an attractive feature of facial beauty.

Did You Know

In some cultures, a dimple is considered a sign of good luck and prosperity.

Dimples - When They Just Appear

Why Do You Have Only One Dimple?

Everyone has a face that is different and no one has a symmetrical face. Each side of our face is different from small features right up to the way our eyes are positioned, facial blemishes and even complexion.

It is only a natural conclusion then that having only one dimple is an occurrence that is common and very normal.

You may have noticed babies who are born with dimples. In some cases they gradually disappear as the child grows because facial muscles grow and when it comes to its normal size one or both dimple may have actually vanished.

Some people may have only one dimple, but not on their cheek. On their chin. This is called a cleft chin. This is not hereditary but is a result of the incomplete merging of the left and right halves of the lower jaw during embryological development.

Is There A Cosmetic Procedure To Get Dimples?

Yes, there is. Dimpleplasty (dimple-plasty).

Plastic surgeons typically perform this procedure right in their office inside of one hour. They make small incisions inside the cheek and stitches (or sutures) are then used to create the desired dimple.

These dimples are permanent. At first there is a dimple even without smiling, but after the skin has settled, taking a few days to a few weeks) the dimple becomes more natural and only appears when you smile or move your face in a particular way.

Interestingly, this is potentially reversible.

How To Get Dimples Naturally

It is impossible to naturally create true dimples. If cosmetic surgery is not an option, you can always attempt to mimic the appearance of dimples through facial exercises. It will help create the look of dimples, albeit temporary ones.

  • Pucker your lips (like a fish) and suck in your cheeks.
  • Keep your lips closed.
  • Place your finger on the indentations in your cheeks; press and hold.
  • Keeping your fingers in the same spots, gradually ease your expression until you are smiling.
  • The location of your fingers is where your dimples would be if they naturally appeared.
  • Press your fingers firmly with your fingertips for temporary dimples then release.
  • For longer lasting 'temporary dimples', continue to press for 30 minutes or more.
  • Repeat this 30 minute exercise daily basis for several weeks.

Note there is no scientific evidence to suggest this works.

Will having a dimple change your life, give you greater confidence or bring you better luck? What are your thoughts on dimples and would you ever consider cosmetic surgery to add a dimple to your cheek if you only had one?

My one dimple isn't even on my cheek or chin, it is below my mouth on the left about halfway between the corner of my mouth and the middle. It only shows up when I smile and I don't think it's cute at all, most people don't notice it's there though.

DDDD on November 27, 2014:

I have one small dimple in my right cheek just below my mouth when i smile,i love it but sometimes i envy the people who have one/two big dimple(s) exactly on their cheeks. But i wouldn't trade mine for no dimples at all ❤

Krystal on July 22, 2013:

I only have one dimple on my left cheek and I LOVE IT. I've seen girls with two, but honestly I just love having one because it's like best of both worlds. I always get called out on my dimple because its so deep while the other is hardly visible. Definitely wouldn't have it any other way.

Elizabeth Parker from Las Vegas, NV on June 05, 2013:

Since I have two dimples, I had to read your hub. Very interesting. I never knew that people would undergo surgery just to have them!

FullOfLoveSites from United States on May 31, 2013:

Despite that a few people hate it, a dimple is one birth defect that many people wish to have. They even undergo surgery just to have it. Thanks for your informative hub. :)

Julia Jillian on May 22, 2013:

@jenisa better to have one on your cheek, than four. I have one above my upper lip and two deep ones above my chin, plus one on my cheek. Also I have back dimples.

Jenisa on May 11, 2013:

I have one dimple and I HATE it. Everyone always says its cute but I hate that's there's only one! How can I get rid of the dimple??!! (With out surgery or anything too extreme)
