Who Wears the Skirts and Who Wears the Trousers?

With a keen interest in British politics this writer is never afraid to share her opinion

Now They Can Wear Shorts

We’re Having a Heatwave

The United Kingdom is enjoying a mini-heatwave.

Unusually for the U.K. it is hot and dry across the whole of the isles.

With Scotland and Wales recording temperatures of 30 degrees C plus Thursday and the good weather forecast to last until well into next week the majority of people are enjoying this heatwave.

However all is not well

England is rarely prepared for any extremes in weather, either hot or cold. The slightest rapid fall of snow can cause chaos. Similarly we as a nation are ill-prepared for beautiful red-hot sunny days.

Public transport, places of work, shops and other venues are still, in some cases, stuck in the past. They lack adequate heating for cold weather and have little if any air conditioning for use in summer.

Then there is the one uniform fits all approach

To be fair some uniforms are better than they used to be. However there are still people forced to wear an all year round uniform which can leave the wearer cold in winter and sweltering in summer.

Then there are school uniforms which seem to have taken a turn for the worse in recent years.

Are Shorts Really So Controversial?

School Uniforms Are A Strange Affair These Days

School uniforms in England are complicated these days.

  • Some schools have banned skirts and dresses meaning female students must wear trousers
  • Some schools still allow girls to wears skirts as long as they are not excessively short. The school decides what length of skirt is too short
  • Some schools operate a gender neutral uniform policy for obvious reasons
  • Some schools still have the same old school uniform rules
  • Many schools will not allow pupils to wear shorts in summer, especially boys

So what happens during a heatwave?

Many boys are still expected to wear long trousers at school no matter how high the thermometer reading reaches.

In 2017 boys at some schools rebelled. They wanted to be allowed to wear shorts in summer and is that such an unreasonable request?

Well it was unreasonable to staff at the school and their request was refused.

So the boys took action and donned skirts.

As the schools involved allowed female pupils to wear skirts it would have been discriminatory to say no and a crazy situation ensued. Rather than allow the boys to wear shorts the staff now had male pupils attending school wearing skirts.

The schools no doubt thought that the lads would feel silly and soon give up but they misjudged the boys.

Girl pupils actively helped by passing on their old uniform skirts.

On June 22 2017, boys at the school decided to wear skirts to school as part of a protest against rules against them wearing trousers in the heat.

Since then, the school has changed its uniform policy, meaning boys are now allowed to wear shorts during the summer term.

And the good news is pupils’ voices are being heard at other schools too were boys are taking action in 2018

The school’s governors have listened to the pupils’ plea and are set to change the uniform policy to include shorts. Current uniform rules allow girls to choose between trousers and skirts but insist boys wear long, tailored black trousers.

Perhaps this issue can be resolved once and for all?

When did School Uniforms Get So Complicated?

School uniforms have always been a mixed bag.

There are pros and cons to any school uniform. At times a full school uniform could cost a small fortune and add an extra financial burden on parents struggling to make ends meets.

But times change and rules have been relaxed in some ways

Yet here we are with roasting hot weather and school children in too many cases expected to wear restrictive, uncomfortable clothing that is not appropriate for wearing when the temperature soars.

Perhaps all the changes backwards and forwards in attempts to equalize uniforms has led us to where we are now.

However there was a time when boys could wear short pants at school, in fact had to at times dependent on their age, and a girl’s school uniform included a summer dress.

Is that really too much to ask?

They were Peggy

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on August 21, 2018:

When I was a girl in school all the girls wore dresses or skirts and blouses. There were dress codes for boys and girls. The skirts could not be too short. Boys had to wear belts and have their shirts tucked in. Times have obviously changed since then. Those boys who rebelled and wore skirts in order to make a point in finally being allowed to wear shorts were certainly inventive. They were smart!

Well I guess it is a sign of the times when people are making a big deal out of clothing. I mean, i don't really think boys should be wearing skirts and if girls want to wear skirts or trousers I have no problem.

I wonder what happened to knickers though????

Hi Dolores. It seems bonkers to me. Yes we had to wear skirts and weren’t allowed to wear trousers. But kudos to the boys who have made a stand by wearing skirts this summer

Dolores Monet from East Coast, United States on June 29, 2018:

Hi Eileen - it seems silly that girls can't wear skirts! I remember when we had to wear them. and complained but the thought was that they were more lady-like. So now they can't? And as for boys, I think that some comfort in hot weather would help the boys in their studies. Overheated, miserable boys wind up either dull and out of it, or wild.
