What is the French Revolution and what is the main effect of it ?


The French Revolution was a period of far-reaching social and political upheaval in France and its colonies that began in 1789 and lasted for decades. During this revolution, the authoritarian monarchy was overthrown in France and democratic ideals was established, eventually ending the dictatorship of Napoleon Bonaparte. The French Revolution is marked as a critical turning point in the history of Western democracy, through which Western civilization ended authoritarian politics and aristocracy and entered the era of democracy. This revolution was an important event in the history of France, Europe, and Western civilization. Historians also consider it one of the most important events in human history.

The basic principle of the French Revolution was "Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood, or Death". This slogan became the driving force behind the revolution that established democracy in the Western world through both military and non-violent methods.

The main effect of the French Revolution

After the French Revolution, there were some changes in France and around the world. The French Revolution had a major impact on Europe and the New World, playing a decisive role in changing the course of human history. It ended feudalism and paved the way for future progress in separately defined individual liberation. Among them are -

After the French Revolution, there was a revolution in social reform. Abolition of slavery in French Colonies in 1848. It was reintroduced by Napoleon. The French Revolution ended the arbitrary and despotic rule of monarchy. The French Revolution established that people were the source of power. It established ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity. It gave a new and modern meaning to the term 'Nation'. It had a sobering effect on the monarchies in the world. The Kings began to take care of people's welfare. The Trade system is improved. People could select their occupation irrespective of their family or position.


The French Revolution was not only an important event considered in the context of Western history, but was the single most important influence on British intellectual, philosophical, and political life in the nineteenth century.

The French Revolution ended in 1799 after Napoleon Bonaparte’s military coup, as he established himself as France’s first consul. Napoleon’s victory over the supposed victors re-established France’s military prowess.
