If you missed the 2017 eclipse, don't fret there are still many fantastic astrological events to view within this upcoming decade alone. The next total solar eclipse visible on the continental United States will occur on April 8th 2024. And some say it will be an even greater spectacle than the 2017 eclipse. The path of the solar eclipse will stretch from from the south/southwest of the United States (near Texas) straight up to the northeastern U.S. (near New York and Maine).

The Path of Totality:

The Path of Totality is an popular album from the 90's rock band Korn. Yet, the term more commonly refers to path on the Earth's surface where you will be able to see total solar eclipse. The above image shows the approximate path of totality for the 2017 eclipse. The path of totality for the 2024 eclipse is clearly shown in the figure 1. Fortunately, there are a number of U.S. cities within the 2024 eclipse's path of totality where (weather permitting) you can gain a clear-eyed view of fascinating event. Here is a quick list of some of those cities.

  • Austin, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Carbondale, Illinois
  • Toledo, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Akron, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Montpelier, Vermont
  • Montreal, Quebec (Canada)
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana

Depending on which city you are in, you will be experiencing the eclipse for different lengths of time. For example, in Austin, TX you would be experiencing total eclipse of the sun for approximately one minute forty-nine seconds (1:49). While if you are in Buffalo, NY you would be experiencing the eclipse for a whopping three minutes and 45 seconds (3:45). In fact, the longest eclipse durations will probably happen within the Mexican state of Durango; where some cities will experience the eclipse for a whole four minutes twenty eight seconds (4:28).

Partial Total Eclipse

Outside the path of totality, there are a number of large cities in the United States that will experience a partial solar eclipse. Below is a list of some of those cities with the corresponding (estimated) percentage of eclipse that they will experience.

  • New York, NY - 89.9%
  • Atlanta, GA - 81.8%
  • Miami, FL - 46.2%
  • Washington D.C. - 87.4%
  • Boston, MA - 92.6%
  • San Francisco, CA - 34.0%
  • Los Angeles, CA - 48.8%
  • Las Vegas, NV - 51.2%
  • Seattle, WA - 20.0%
  • Chicago, IL - 93.8%

Once again these are only estimates. However, they should reflect reasonably good estimates of what to expect on April 8th (Assuming good weather).

Equipment To View The 2024 Eclipse Path:

If you plan to view the eclipse along the 2024 eclipse path, remember that looking up at the sun is always a dangerous action. To view the eclipse, you will need viewers with the proper light filters. There are a number of companies that sell solar eclipse viewers, solar eclipse glasses and solar eclipse binoculars.

Liz Westwood from UK on December 16, 2019:

I hadn't realised that there was an eclipse due in 2024 over the USA.
