I have been living in Singapore for the past 28 years! A seasoned traveller. I’ll help you fully discover Singapore.
Types of Volunteering Activities
There are many types of activities that you can volunteer for. What makes volunteering great is that you do not need tons of cash nor do you need excellent skills. All you require is to set aside some time.
Here are some of the more common volunteering efforts in Singapore.
- Collecting donations
- Food distribution
- Social media management
- Admin tasks
- Photography / Videography
- Video editing / Photo editing
- Spending time
Why Do I Volunteer?
Every volunteer has their own reasons for volunteering. For me, I volunteer as it helps me relief the built-up stress. Typically, I’d volunteer on weekends so all the work frustrations and stress will be released during my volunteering efforts.
Volunteering in itself is an eye-opener for me. Witnessing people living in small rental flats really makes me appreciate what I have. Witnessing the recipients smile upon receiving their donations really puts a smile on my face too.
I am blessed with lots of things in life, and it is only fair that I give some back to the community in whatever means possible.
Free Food For All
This organisation aims to provide free food for all those that need it. Almost every week they will organise food distribution activities where they go around the selected neighbourhood to distribute food to those who require it. They have a list of all those who require assistance, so it’s a targeted effort.
A good initiative by Free Food For All is that they have their own ready to eat meals. These meals have already been cooked and all the recipients have to do is to heat them up in the microwave before consumption.
There are many activities that Free Food For All offers, from food packing, food distribution to even videography or photography. Simple register your interest on their website, and they will contact you accordingly.
A community created to serve the needs of the less fortunate. Project Awareness does not operate like an organisation. It is just a community of like-minded individuals looking to make a difference.
This is a community which is extremely active around the whole of Singapore. In fact, they have a few different WhatsApp groups that cater to the different areas of Singapore.
To get started, all you have to do is head over to their Facebook page and join the area WhatsApp group which you are most comfortable with. Once inside, whenever there are activities which require volunteers, the admin will pump it in that chat, and you can simply indicate whether you are interested.
As there are limited slots available, if at the last minute you are unable to attend, please do update in the chat, so others will be able to replace you.
Homeless Hearts Of Singapore
Singapore is one of the richest cities in the world. Despite being one of the richest, they are still plenty of homeless people around in Singapore. Most of us will not be able to see them, as they need to only make themselves visible at night when it’s about time to sleep.
In the daytime, they’d be like us, finding different ways to sustain themselves.
Homeless Hearts Of Singapore aims to give the homeless people friends to talk to. Most of the homeless people do not have friends or families that they can share their problems with. That’s where Homeless Hearts Of Singapore comes into the picture.
Not only do they provide a listening ear, they even provide items that can be useful for their comfort, such as food, blankets, pillows, etc. With their help, some homeless people even managed to find themselves new flats to stay in!
There’s one thing that I require to caution you. Not all the people sleeping on the streets are homeless. Some have flats which are far from their work place, or some just can’t get along with their roommates. So, it is best to not assume them as homeless.
Volunteering with Homeless Hearts Of Singapore, your role mainly involves befriending those sleeping outdoors. So, the activities are usually late in the night, as most of the people sleeping outdoors only appear at night.
Other times, you may even join in as their recce team. This role involves scouting around Singapore to find other homeless people. Again, this is only applicable at night.
This is one of the platforms in Singapore where you are able to contribute to the causes that you feel connected with. Anybody is able to submit a campaign on behalf of another individual. Of course, this is subject to approval by the team behind Give Asia.
Though it may seem like Give Asia is an organisation, it is in fact fully run by volunteers. There are only a handful of permanent staff which are getting paid to maintain certain services.
In terms of volunteering opportunities, there are quite a few depending on your skill set. Prior to being invited into the group chat, one of the volunteers will conduct a quick introduction about Give Asia and how you can give back to the society.
Activities range from video editing, administrative tasks and even copywriting. Whenever there are opportunities available, this will be updated in the group chat, where you can indicate your interest.
A non-profit which is run to provide freshly cooked meals to the less fortunate. Volunteers are the ones solely responsible for the preparations and cooking of the food items. You must be wondering, can I volunteer if I have no experience in cooking. The short answer is, yes, of course. You don’t need any fancy cooking experience to help out in the kitchen.
As long as you are able to hold a knife and cut, that’s a good start for you. They are even open to having kids on site to help out. Of course, parents, please do look after your kids to prevent any injuries.
As you will be handling food items, strict hygiene practices have to be adhered to. No long fingernails and covered shoes at all times. Gloves, hair nets will be provided on site, so you won’t have to worry about that.
Food gets distributed once all the food items have been prepared. There will be 3 different shifts, so the tasks allocated to you will vary accordingly. First shift starts as early as 5am, which makes sense as there are lots to prepare.
Interested parties will simply have to register interest through their website and wait for confirmation.
Spoilt For Choice!
There are many other communities out there that are helping out. You will never run out of organisations or communities to help with. The common misconception out there is that you need lots of money to volunteer. Well, I’m not saying they are wrong, but they are not right either. You do not need much money to help out with volunteering efforts.
Most importantly is setting aside that time to help out.
So, which ones will you be helping out first?
