Question

Describe Valli’s interaction with people while she was riding the Bus to the town. What does this tell you about Valli’s character? (8 Marks - CBSE 2020)

Answer

Valliammai is a personage from the extract 'Madam Rides the Bus' penned by Vallikannan. In the plot, she is personated as an eight-year-old, confident, intelligent girl who is longing for a bus ride to the city.

During her ride on the bus, Valli interacts with several people: the conductor, an elderly person, and an ugly-looking woman chewing betel leaf.

The conductor considers her as a child who is incapable of looking after herself and makes fun of her by mimicking her voice. Valli, being a sensitive heart, is highly disturbed by the conductor's approach and demands respect. In the end, she finds him friendly and laughs at his jokes.

Meanwhile, she gets annoyed by the attention of an elderly person who instructs her to sit down on her seat. The short-tempered girl replies to the honestly concerned person that there is no child in the room and that she had paid for her tickets. Finally, she comes across an old ugly-looking woman besides her seat and finds her absolutely repulsive. The lady's over caring nature irritates Valli as Valli finds herself as an independent woman.
