Studying and staying focused wasn't always my thing, but I've learned to overcome it and be a master at it over the past years!
You Have to Start Somewhere
Growing up, studying was quite a tough struggle for me. I was productive in giving myself three days in advance to study, but that was no help. The first day, I would sit down to study and get distracted. On the second day, I would sit down to study and pick up my phone, causing another distraction. By the third night, I was hopeless. There was no point in me trying anymore. There was no way I could study the day before a test and remember all of it. My brain would be way too cloudy.
I was so tired of this ridiculous routine! So over the past years, I changed things up. Little by little, I grew better at studying and focusing by using these five tips. These five tips to use are:
- Blocking out distractions
- Taking breakfast or snacks into consideration
- Time intervals for studying
- Discovering your learning style
- Reading it out loud, and writing it down.
These five tips have been the biggest game-changer for me and will be a guaranteed way to help you be successful at studying.
1. Block Out All Distraction
What are your distractions? Well, I have some distractions of my own. I tend to be unfocused and have a lot of disturbance during my work time. Allow us to use this time to talk about some ways to be less interrupted and more aware of what is right in front of us.
Waking up early to start a praising morning is a positive way of thinking to begin a study session. According to an article on the website Develop Good Habits, "Waking up early will help you improve excellent focus and significant reduction of stress." When you use the help from other wonderful and successful things, studying and focusing can will be done correctly.
There is another thing that teens usually have a problem with. Those little devices carried in their back pockets can be a very humongous interference with studying. If you put your phone on, do not disturb and place it upside down, it will be out of your view, causing you to have one less distraction in your way of success.
2. Put Breakfast and Snacks into Consideration
Having a delicious breakfast generates the brain to wake up. "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." How many times did we hear that growing up? Well, that is true, knowing the information you know about how excellent breakfast is, the most important meal of the day, you can use that knowledge to encourage yourself to study harder.
You can prep yourself to strengthen your brain each morning with protein and glucose. Protein and glucose are both nutritionists for your body because they allow your brain to get extreme energy and get it moving. There are so many breakfasts and snacks that contain both protein and glucose.
Both protein and glucose aren't just good for your brain but are also good for your overall health. Glucose and protein can make you less hungry, oversee food admission, and controls cravings. So picking up a bag of chips would not be good how about you considering choosing a snack like cheese, crackers, or even a delicious well-tossed fruit salad.
3. Time Intervals for Studying
With studying, it is never good to devote your entire day to it. Studying too hard or for too long can cause short-term memory loss for the things that you studied for. Studying for a long period will not just affect your test scores. That will affect your mental and physical health as well. According to "The Effects of Studying Too Hard -The Club Reporter" students who work for at least 3.1 hours a day on homework are more likely to develop health and mental problems, such as depression, sleep deprivation, lack of balance, and alienation in their lives. Therefore, it is always good to study for at least 1-2 hours a day with a ten-minute break in between.
Long hard study sessions can lead to an absence of focus and accordingly an insufficiency of learning maintenance. It's not about how long you study for but how you use your study time. It's not a good idea to pick only one day throughout the week to study and then decide that you're going to study for 3-5 hours that day. When studying, it is always important to have an effective schedule. For example, pick two or three days throughout the week where you're not busy and set a timer for 1 to 2 hours on those days when studying. This will not only give you a lot of free time to prepare you for your test but will also refresh your memory every time you go back to study more.
If you study for over 3 hours straight, more than likely you will get unfocused and less interested by the third hour. Taking frequent breaks or even 10-minute breaks every 30 minutes to an hour can help to keep your focus, interest, and motivation. Taking 10-minute breaks allows you to refresh your brain and improve in skills that maybe you weren't that good at before.
4. Discover Your Learning Style
Discovering your learning style and sticking to it can be quite an experiment for some of us. But, it's also important to know what your learning style is. You can utilize it every time you study and get better at it. We all have a different way that we prefer to learn. There are some of you who are auditory learners. Which means you prefer to learn by having someone else speak to you. Some visual learners prefer to learn by seeing things like a drawing. Then we have tactile or kinesthetic learners who prefer to learn by actually doing it whether it be a math problem or building something.
Whether you remember stuff by flashcards, audio messages, or by writing out a problem or quiz on a paper and solving it is up to you. What's most important is that you're able to remember what you studied for. If you tried a studying technique and it's just not working, then chances are you need to move on to the next one until you find the right one that sticks. Not saying that once you find the studying technique that works for you, just stick to that one method. It's okay to have a few strategies that work for you, but don't cling to a method that's not for you because it'll just keep letting you down.
5. Read it Out Loud and Write it Down
Reading something out loud to remember it and writing something down to remember it are two different things but they are both very important things that need to be combined. Doing not only one but both things will help to improve your memory. You are more likely to remember something if you read it out loud or write it down.
When people hear "reading" and "studying" in the same sentence they think that reading in their head is enough to get it stuck in their brain, but that is not the case. When you read out loud while studying, your perception turns into a piece of the experience. According to "Is it Better to Read Silently or Out Loud When Studying" Reading out loud while studying can trigger cognitive abilities that relate to memory, attention, and comprehension which activate your ability to hoard and keep information in your brain.
One of the best ways to remember something better and faster is by writing it down. When you write something down on a piece of paper, board, computer, etc... all that various sensible knowledge enhances the possibilities that information will collect and be stored for later. Writing stuff down demands your brain process the erudition in a more comprehensive way, which helps you, fortunately, load that information into your consciousness.

Like most of you, I know that trying to stay focus and study can be hard sometimes but if you put your mind to it and the effort into it, then there is a way for you to become very successful. These five tips shared with you in this article are for you to be useful for school and studies. Set goals for yourself. Help yourself by improving every day because few people can encourage you to push forward. If you are not willing to put in the work for yourself and complete the goals you set for yourself to accomplish, you will not be successful as you want to be.
