3 Of The Most Popular Natural Psychedelics

Zack is a research addict who has dabbled in digital art, and freelance work.

Natural psychedelics have been used for thousands of years by various tribes, and cultures across the world. Natural psychedelics are used today for spiritual, religious, recreational, and medicinal reasons. I'm exploring the most popular natural psychedelics.

1. N, N-Dimethyltryptamine(DMT)

When people think of a drug, they tend to think of an external substance. There's one substance, however, that is found in almost all of nature, including mammals. The culprit is N, N-Dimethyltryptamine(DMT). N, N-Dimethyltryptamine(DMT) had only recently begun gaining mainstream and seeing that it's such an intense experience, I thought it deserved a spot. DMT is a tryptamine and neurotransmitter, and it has been labeled the "spirit molecule". DMT has been used for centuries by numerous cultures for healing and religious purposes. They crushed up a plant containing DMT, and then they would mix it with a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor, which made the concoction orally active. In modern times, people tend to smoke or vaporize the substance.

DMT is considered to be the most powerful psychedelic known to man. The effects of DMT are largely determined by two factors: when and where. Rick Strassman conducted a five year long study on the effects of DMT at the University of New Mexico. The study determined that lower doses of DMT produced no hallucinations, although it did produce emotional experiences. In contrast, higher doses produced strong hallucinogenic experiences which included vivid, rapidly moving images. The study found that DMT can induce a feeling to the user that he or she is able to communicate with an intelligent being. Furthermore, DMT is considered to be neither toxic or addictive, and can be used as a treatment for serious addictions.

2. Psilocybin

Mushrooms Containing Psilocybin.

Mushrooms Containing Psilocybin.

Magic mushroom is the slang term given to any kind of mushroom that is psychoactive. The main psychoactive ingredient is psilocybin, which is broken down to produce psilocin. Like many other natural psychedelics, magic mushrooms were used for ritualistic purposes by various cultures. Magic mushrooms are found on all continents, both tropical and subtropical, but the majority is found in subtropical areas. Magic mushrooms has many health benefits. A study found that these mushrooms could be a potential treatment for neurological disorders. Another study proved that magic mushrooms are effective at sending obsessive-compulsive disorders into remission. This makes magic mushrooms much more effective than current medications. The active ingredients have also been found to treat serious addictions, much the same as LSD.

Users tend to have a spiritual and emotional experience with magic mushrooms, but the effects still vary from person to person. The main effects take place within 3-4 hours after ingestion, and can feel extremely long since psilocybin alters the user's perception of time. The most obvious effects are auditory- and visual hallucinations, which include distortions of objects and seeing sounds. Users may also see halos around objects. At higher doses, objects seem to be "breathing", and patterns within objects tend to stand out much more. Research suggests that psilocybin is not toxic to human organs, but higher doses may lead to dangerous behaviour.

3. Mescaline

Peyote Cacti Containing Mescaline.

Peyote Cacti Containing Mescaline.

Mescaline is a natural occurring substance found in various cacti. The most popular cacti containing mescaline are the San Pedro cactus and Peyote. Mescaline is known for its hallucinogenic effects, which is very similar to those of LSD. Mescaline has been used for at least 5,700 years by Native Americans, and it's still being used today for different reasons. It has been suggested that mescaline may be a potential treatment for addiction issues, and depression but unfortunately it's a controlled substance. Because of this, only a few studies have ever been conducted. Mescaline is only legal for certain religious groups to use during ceremonies.

The effects are very similar to those of LSD and psilocybin, but with an unique touch. The most noticeable effects are altered thinking processes, an altered sense of time, and hallucinations. Color may be much more vibrant and intense. Visual patterns are very common with mescaline experiences. The unique touch produced by mescaline is geometricization, which basically means three-dimensional objects appear to be flat.

That concludes my list for the most popular natural psychedelics. Next time you're taking a hike in the woods, think about how strong natural substances can really be, and also about all the incredible medical usages they contain.

all those above is super grate but not all natural drugs are good, take Datura for an example

s tone on April 09, 2018:

I do not know how to class it but

Belladona is also a powerfull plant, that can take you far, far away.

causing loss of grip on limbs, and creating imaginary stories Inside your head.

Michal on November 17, 2017:

Love to try. But to find it

Dangerous Dave on November 10, 2017:

Drugs are Bad for you Okeh!!

Rich on October 10, 2017:

I've been micro dosing shrooms for half a yr or more. I was not 'depressed' before I started but I feel as if I was. It keeps me grounded. The gov has NO legit excuse to label it 'illegal'!

It's a blatant effort to protect the pharma industry and makes me wish I lived in a country with an honest gov....

William on September 19, 2017:

Bufo Alvarius toad secretion / 5-MeO-DMT

Kambo frog secretion

Iboga rootbark

If "Drugs" is taken to mean Medicine, those are probably the strongest natural ones

Otherwise, Salvia Divinorum should probably make the cut

Rick on August 09, 2017:

THE strongest entheogen according to Terrence McKenna is Bufo Alvarius, ie 5-meo-dmt.

It takes about 20 seconds to send you to God.

Iboga is also stronger than the 3 in the article, but very different to Bufo Alvarius, i believe.

Zack Woll (author) from Somewhere on June 27, 2017:

I would like to experience ibogaine. I've read about it, but that's about it.

Kilodamus on June 27, 2017:

Ive had plenty of experiences with all listed both traditionally and synthesized and ibogaine is in a class by itself . It is unlike any other entheogen and truly has to be experienced to be believed .

Kilodamus on June 27, 2017:

Ummmm ibogaine........ from tabernathe iboga, just saying there is no entheogen even close to its power. That being said it depends on how u gauge strongest. Are we talking visuals ? Duration? In natural form or synthesized? Or are we talking psychedelic entheogens ? Because iboga isnt a psychedelic even though most describe it and class it as such , instead its an oneirogenic. But its power is unrivaled soo much so that its usually described as an ordeal or rites of passage , personally i feel its a true warriors journey n second to none in terms of strength.

Corey on June 21, 2017:

Jaco, can you link the article on salvia?

Zack Woll (author) from Somewhere on June 19, 2017:

I actually wrote a separate article on Salvia.

James on June 19, 2017:

You might want to add Salvia Divinorum which actually is THE strongest natural psychedelic, active in the micrograms like LSD
