The Scarlet Mormon Butterfly

The Scarlet Mormon Butterfly is black with bright red markings, and also goes by the names Crimson Mormon, Scarlet Swallowtail, Menelaides rumanzovius, and M. Rumanzovia. I first saw one at a butterfly conservatory, which if you have never been to one, I highly recommend that. I have been to a few different butterfly conservatories in my life, and have loved them all and the differences they offer. Mainly, I love that they have butterflies from around the world, that are just beautiful and that I would otherwise not get to see in person.

The picture shown above is a male Scarlet Mormon, and like many other butterfly species the female takes on a different look. All the females even look different in their subspecies, whereas the males all look the same for the most part. No matter what, the bottom sides of the butterflies have striking coloring, mainly red and black and white.

One notable characteristic of the females is that their top sides will be primarily black but have some minimal white and red markings on them. The larvae eat the leaves of citrus plants mostly. The adults feed on the nectar of flowers. You will find these beauties in Southeast Asia, in the Philippines in particular.

One thing I love about these butterflies, is how the light reflects off of their wings if it is shining on them just right.  The contrast of black and white really stands out in this case, and is just a different kind of beautiful than you might normally expect in a butterfly.

I love the shape of this butterfly, it is very unique.
