I am an education enthusiast. I believe that education is power and a foundation to a better life. Children's education is important sector.

Virtual Learning is Here to Stay

We have all experienced the scenario of online classes of our children, and know how difficult it is to make children sit in a place and focus completely in these classes. Children by nature are energetic and excited and get restless when they are forced to sit for long hours in front of a computer or laptop.

While it is easier to focus and pay attention to things which are exciting and interesting to us, it is difficult to pay attention to things that do not interest us. The ability to focus varies for every person.

Though generally short attention spans are linked to children, in reality many working professionals also suffer from attention deficiency. This affect their efficiency and productivity at work. With the pandemic not abating, the virtual classes are here to stay. Learning is a continuous process and cannot be stopped.. When there were school closures due to lockdowns during the pandemic, the education sector quickly adapted the online mode to ensure that there is no break in the learning for children.

Focused Attention for Efficient Learning

This is an age of information overload. There are instant modes of entertainment and attention spans are getting shorter. Unless presentations are interactive and engaging, many of the participants zoom out. People are getting selective. The main variables that impact attention are the level of interest a particular person has in the subject or task and the number of distractions.

Concentration is focused attention. Focused attention enables efficient learning, faster comprehension, better memory, and helps achieve goals faster. Institutions across the world have realized the importance of attention for the successful performance of students. Educators are therefore constantly working to develop curricula that offer smart methodologies to enhance attention.

As the world moves increasingly towards a digital future, we find several applications that are dedicated to mindfulness and wellness. New technologies are shaping the education sector too. The education sector is embracing technology to replicate classroom teaching. Teachers and educators are also continuously reviving teaching methodologies to ensure that the students do not lose out on their valuable education.

Technology to the Rescue

Technology has revolutionized every sector in the past decade. The pandemic gave it a further boost. The education sector is one such sector which saw great strides in technological progress. A student can learn anything and everything sitting in one end of the world by participating in classes being held in another end, because of the advanced technological learning and training solutions. As online or remote classes became the only solution during the pandemic, the education systems swiftly adapted to the new method. This ensured there was no interruption in the learning process for the students.

Technology has rapidly changed the education sector. The wide range of courses and applications available today efficiently combine entertainment with education. Game based learning modules have been created that make learning engaging and fun for the children. These have been developed after thorough research and have proved to assist students in cognitive development. Apart from assisting students maintain focus on the given tasks, they improve concentration while learning new things, they also manage to avoid distractions, switching tasks, and impulsive behavior.

Ways Parents can Ensure Children Stay focused

As the world battles the pandemic and schools remain closed, online learning continues. The schools, teachers, and parents are trying their best to ensure a smooth transition from traditional classrooms to virtual learning. For the children the drastic change, with a considerable increase in screen time and the change in routine is not easy to deal with. It is difficult for children to concentrate during these online classes. Here are some tips that can help the children focus during virtual classes:

  • Designate a fixed place which is quiet, comfortable and free of distractions as children have to spend several hours a day in front of the laptop.
  • Make sure to iron out the technical problems like internet connectivity, audio and video quality, etc., beforehand, that may hamper the child’s learning experience.
  • Engage in positive conversation with the children, to avoid the tendency of the children to get back to their smart phones and gaming sessions as soon as the classes are over. Having a heart-to-heart talk on the impact of excessive screen time on health is important.
  • Encourage them to read books instead or cultivate good hobbies like painting, drawing, playing a musical instrument. Now that outdoor activities are restricted, children tend to feel bored.
  • Allow them to learn at their own pace, give them time to process the online lesson, without putting too much pressure on them to move ahead.
Encourage the love for Books from an Young Age

Encourage the love for Books from an Young Age

  • Avoid prompting the children with answers during tests and quizzes done for assessing the children’s learning and absorbing.
  • Keep everything required for the class like books, pencils, crayons and water nearby so that the child does not have to get up and get it every time it is needed.
  • Take time during recess or after classed and discuss the days topic studied daily and ask them about the difficulties or challenges faced by them during the lectures.
  • Being in touch with the teachers and taking regular feedback from them on the progress made by the child can be very helpful.
  • Parents need to ensure that the children do not use messaging platforms or playing games during online classes. Removing distracting apps from the laptop used for online classes is a good option.
  • Children tend to switch off the cameras during class, which is not advisable as teachers need to see the children while teaching. Parents have to make sure that the children do not do that.
  • There are many games available today that help improve memory and concentration. Encourage the children in playing these games in their free time.
  • Set up small goals and praise them when they achieve them. This encourages children to work harder and get them interested to complete the assigned task or work.
  • A proteins rich diet along with vitamins and minerals is very essential to enhance concentration. Add berries, nuts, avocados, eggs, fish, fruits, vegetables like beet, broccoli and avoid sugary treats and junk food as they make them lethargic.
  • A little physical activity like running or skating around in the house or even playing hide and seek during short breaks will help refresh the children and focus better in the class.
  • Fix a regular routine for tasks like play time, study time, time to do homework. This not only helps improve concentration in children but teaches them time management.
  • Good sleep is equally important for improving attention and concentration in class. Deep breathing exercises and yoga also help improve focus.
  • Allot a particular time and engage with the children in their favorite past time like music, dance, movies, to relieve them from the stress of the difficult times and change in routine.

Learning Apps and Courses to Enhance Attention

To increase the attention span and knowledge of the children, various learning apps are on the rise. These apps make learning more fun and easier for the children. Educational learning apps and mobile apps are gaining huge popularity, the world over. The main advantages of these apps is the easy access on mobile, 24 hour availability, interactive sessions, enhanced performance and optimal usage of time. Today these numerous learning apps offer concentration enhancing and cognitive activities to boost attention and learning abilities in students.

The Fascinating World of Digital Learning

As most of these digital applications are dynamic and offer customized solutions, learning has become interactive and engaging and manage to retain the attention of the students and improve their overall academic performance. The use of infographics, and multimedia has made the classroom exchanges much more interesting. They also have options for teachers to access the progress of the students and devise means to address the individual needs of the students. Online apps which are scientifically well researched and ensure positive results have become the need of the hour. They facilitate optimal academic performance in the digital world of learning.

Final Thoughts

Many parents assume that their child might have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Syndrome), a syndrome characterized by hyperactivity, inattentiveness and impulsivity, when they do not pay proper attention in the virtual class. Children are by nature active, energetic and have short attention spans. It is not correct to presume that they have ADHD. There may be various other factors causing the lack of attentiveness which can be improved by following some simple steps.

Today there are several courses which help enhance children’s concentration. As online classes are different from real classrooms, children need time to adjust to the change. The parents can help them adapt to the new normal by investing more time and interest in their children. Attention can be enhanced in children by making learning more engaging and classes more interactive.

When simple strategies do not seem to help, parents may need to seek the help of a pediatrician or psychologist to evaluate for ADHD. Professional help can be sought if diagnosed with this disorder and a proper therapy discussed to help improve the child’s attention span.

Thanks Misbah for the visit and comments. I sympathize with your brother. It is really very difficult to adjust to a virtual learning environment after being used to classroom learning. Children find it difficult to concentrate.qw are also having lockdown here for the second time since April. Hope things improve soon and we get back to normal life again. Take care Misbah, stay blessed.

Misbah Sheikh from — This Existence Is Only an Illusion on May 27, 2021:

When we were having lockdown in Spain and my brother was studying from home. It was hard for him to concentrate on his education. The school he is studying in is a British school. They created online Microsoft Teams groups for the students to join and interact with teachers and other students, but it was not very helpful to many students and the teachers as well. I pray everything gets well in India as well.

In Spain, we had lockdown for more than 6 consecutive months last year and a lenient lockdown a lot of times with some restrictions which we still follow from time to time.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Chitrangada for the visit and kind comments. It is very difficult to restrict children to stay indoors all the time and attend virtual classes instead of school. They love to meet their friends and play outdoors. I wish and pray too this pandemic problem is solved soon and we are back to the old normal. Have a wonderful day, stay blessed.

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on May 26, 2021:

An important article, and you have made some valuable points.

I agree with you that children have so much energy, that it’s not proper to sit in front of the computer for virtual classes. The recent times have been tough for the children, the parents and the teachers. Nothing can match the real classroom teachings, or playing in the actual sports grounds. I really wish that this pandemic becomes a history soon and the children and all of us get to live, what we call as the normal life.

Great insightful article, well written, and well thought of. Thank you for sharing.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on May 26, 2021:

I totally agree with you Pamela. Children need socialization. They are the most affected in this pandemic. They can neither play outdoors nor go to school. Some children resort to tantrums because of this. Parents have a tough time managing everything from their work to children's education and wellness. Have a great day, stay blessed.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on May 26, 2021:

In these trying times of the pandemic, I'm certain many are suffering.

The children do pay a hesvy price with no socializing .

It is a great idea to have them learn virtually. It's not gonna replace their friends, but it might help strengthen family unity.

Good write

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on May 26, 2021:

Vidya, I think the children miss the socialization with other children their age. I don't think this s good. My granddaughter say it "is way more fun to go to school." I think children need the socialization. Learning is more than a virtual teacher. I am glad you wrote this article as it expresses some of the issues children are now facing.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on May 26, 2021:

Thank you so much Pamela for the visit and the kind comments. It is true that technology has helped learning to be uninterrupted. But children do face a lot of stress with the change in routine. My granddaughter still says she misses meeting her friends at school. I was thinking of her when I wrote this article.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on May 26, 2021:

Vidya, It seem life has gotten so complicated for children who are learning at home. I absolutely agree that technology has revolutionized every sector in the past decade. Things have dramatically changed for children who can't go to a regular school. I really like your article and I think you make many valid points.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on May 26, 2021:
