Strange Creatures - The Weird Monster of Manor Road

Strange animal spotted in Baltimore County.

A strange animal has been reported in northeastern Baltimore County. Again. But this isn’t the Weird Sampson fox or the ugly mini-hyena of Glyndon – it’s a whole new weirdness. Every so often, strange animal sightings crop up, exciting armchair cryptozoologists.

Early on Friday morning February 6, 2009, between midnight and 12:30, Dave Monet and Mike J. were driving toward Baltimore on Manor Road in Baltimore County when the strange creature crossed their path.

“It was about the size of a Labrador retriever,” said Dave. with a shudder.

The beast was high-hipped, its back sloping toward the front. Two long back legs were shaped like those of a dog while the front legs were noticeably shorter. It had a short tail and prominent claws on each foot. The back of its head resembled that of a short-eared dog. Going toward the front of the head, the dog shape gradually changed to that of a pig with a flattened, snout-like nose.

Unperturbed by the car’s approach, despite the high beams, the animal moved forward at a comfortable pace.

“It didn’t move like a dog,” said Mike J. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

It has been postulated that the animal was a young black bear. Though unusual in the area, black bears have popped up in unlikely places in Maryland – St. Mary’s County, Halethorpe in Baltimore County and on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

“I’ve seen bears before,” said Dave. “This thing had thinner legs and didn’t walk with a waddle like a bear.”

“Maybe it was a dog,” I suggested during our interview.

Dave laughed. “No way it was a dog. I know what a dog looks like and believe me, this was no dog.”

Dave described the creature to an ‘artist’ sort of like they used to do with criminals before they started up with that program that does it for you and put the artists out of work or reduced them to drawing sketches of people at carnivals. The drawing was modified as Dave watched and he seemed pleased with the result.

“Only it was facing the other way,” he said.

The Monster of Manor Road - Actual Sketch

April 15, 2009. A friend of my husband recently spotted a black bear in his back yard in the vacinity of Manor Road, Baltimore County. This has me thinking that the weird creature was a black bear. The two young men who reported the sighting of the 'mystery animal' are yelling 'no way' at the suggestion of a bear. But sometimes, when we see something we do not expect in a place that it should not be or never usually is...we just don't see what's really there. Sorry boys.

Maybe it was chupcabra!

Monster Sighting Often Occur at Night

People often report seeing unusual creatures, especially at night. Sometimes poor vision due to the darkness affects the appearance of moving animals. Seeing something you don’t expect (say a bear crossing a street in Baltimore County) may lead you to believe, well, anything.

Reported sightings of a weird fox-like creature turned out to be a fox with mange. Close encounters with a mangy fox may be preceded by a terrible stench. Other reports have been thought to be a Sampson fox, that is a fox with a genetic problem that inhibits the growth of guard hairs, those long, beautiful hairs that give a normal fox its distinctive style. People were willing to call the peculiar looking foxes mini-hyenas or some odd hybrid. If you're not sure what you are seeing, sometimes your brain just makes something up.

The animal recently seen on Manor road now has a sort of fan club, or ‘group’ on Facebook. They all it the Pig Dog of Manor Road because of its similarity to both pig and dog. Maybe it was a ‘monster,’ a genetic freak like wandered off the island of Doctor Mureau. Maybe it was a young bear. Maybe it was just an ugly dog.

Maybe someone else has seen this or a similar creature. If so, please leave a comment below.

Au fait - this random silliness is thanks to my son and a friend. I sat there with my son and drew what he described, several times until he said "that's it!" I think sometimes we see things in the dark and maybe don't see the real thing. Our vision, not the best at night, perhaps, may alter the reality. Whatever he saw, they talked about it for years. Thanks!

C E Clark from North Texas on October 23, 2013:

The drawing looks a lot like a young bear -- they are sometimes born deformed in varying degrees too, and if it isn't anything life threatening, they live with their deformity. The drawing doesn't really look that different from a bear, so it's likely just a vague mutation for some reason.

It's also true that even in our modern times where we have practically taken over the entire planet, there are still creatures we haven't discovered here.

Well, Jim, you got me. Of course I've been wandering around Google but the only thing that keeps popping up is a Welsh Corgi! Hope someone can help you out!

Mooseman - don't you think it's a bear?

Mooseman on April 21, 2012:

I have a trail camera picture with what appears to be that same creature on it. Perhaps your son would like to see it. The picture came from a friend of mine and was taken just outside Ottawa, Ontario.

Dr. Jabooby - maybe it was a dog!

My sister saw something similar in the mountains in tn. it moved like a dog and was pitch black

sweetie - I wrote this one up after hearing a story from my son and his friend about seeing this 'strange creature' while driving down the road at night. We see some odd stuff at night due to poor lighting conditions. Whatever it was, I was just having a bit of fun with it. I still think it was a young bear. Thanks!

sweetie1 from India on April 30, 2011:

Hi dolores,

I am sure there are still 100s of 1000s of creatures which are still hiding from men and haven't been discovered by now but i don't think a big animal would be hiding .. yes some small bacterias and may be some very small of size of may be rodents about above that.. i don't think so

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on April 21, 2011:

Kenny - well a cat would never have such a snout, but a bear would. Of course, people often see the weird things while driving around in the dark when we can't see so well. Thank you for commenting.

Kenny Phillips on April 20, 2011:

The sketch looks like an obese Lynx or Bobcat with a snout...but the legs look more bear like.

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on February 10, 2011:

Paper - I still think it was a young bear. Poor thing, if it was, has no business in the area, too much traffic, too many people...thanks!

bridgetflood - well maybe it was! Though we don't usually have them in these parts. Maybe it was an escaped pet capybarra! Thanks!

bridgetflood on February 09, 2011:

that thing you drew looks like a capybura but its legs are a lil bit longer :)

PaperNotes on February 09, 2011:

We know that there are many animals living in thick woods and forest yet because their habitats are now being swept off by various cause, even those animals which we rarely see come out in the open in search of foods and shelter.

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on July 15, 2010:

Thanks, Lisa! I know that there was a bear in Owings Mills not that long ago. And who knows what we can see in the dark, near the woods. Just makes life more exciting!

I am a former Ranger/Naturalist, I teach my own Black Bear Program, as it is tru that Balto. Co. has Bears. People view areas with lines, boudaries & maps, Bears and other wildlife just go about their business for food and to explore their vast wilderness. I am also a believer in strange wildlife sightings, and writing a book, titled: "Forestghost". I believe whatever you saw !

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on May 04, 2010:

austyn - thank you for dropping by and leaving a comment. It's unsettling to see something and you don't know what it is. When I look at my own drawing, I still think it's a bear. Those black bears can pop up anywhere. But I didn't see it. You've got yourself a very cool story.

austyn on May 03, 2010:

last night(may 2nd) i swear to god i saw that thing walking up Woodlawn Dr. in Rawlings Heights,MD and don't think i'm messing around i'm dead serious it was scary i didn't know what it was

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on April 05, 2010:

michel - the animal that I drew was as described by the guy who actually saw it. I kinda think that it resembles a bear. Now the animal filmed from the police car is just plain weird. Who knows? Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment, michel!

michel on April 05, 2010:

i think we need to be open minded, if you check the car cop video of the weird looking (coyote) it sure look what was described in the text. And that animnal his clearly not near a coyote, a fox or a dog.

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on October 27, 2009:

Philisia - hmmmm, sometimes you see something that you don't expect, maybe in the twilight, and it can be confusing as all get-out. I myself once saw a coyote in an area where I'd never expected to see one and was baffled. I still think that the animal I mentioned here was an out-of-place bear. Could your animal have been a bear? Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

Philisia on October 26, 2009:

I believe in this odd looking animal I have seen it for myself. it was carring what looked like to be its baby in its mouth by my home in macungie PA.

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on June 23, 2009:

Thanks a lot, Charles. It made me laugh as I wrote it, though the guys who saw it were not amused. Sometimes when you see something you do not expect to see, you make something up. I still think it was a bear. If you recall, about a year ago there was a black bear in Arbutus and Halethorpe, both pretty populous suburbs.

Charles Hilton on June 20, 2009:

I'm originally from Baltimore City, but, have lived in the county since I was eleven and I've never heard of this creature. The only strange legendary Maryland creature I was previously aware of was Chessie.

As far as the possibility of bears in Baltimore County, it wouldn't surprise me anymore, considering the black bear problems they've been having in New Jersey, of all places. The experts are saying that the encroachment of humans on their habitat are making them less fearful of humans, and consequently, they've been attracted to populated areas, especially for the ease of access to the food related items that we set out in our garbage. They're no different than racoons in that regard.

I really enjoyed this post, as I enjoy all things that challenge our preconceptions.

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on June 03, 2009:

Thank you for stopping by, mythbuster. I love the video of the cop filming the whatever it was. The thing that the guys saw in my hub? Recently, this is a month or two later, I've heard reports of a bear in the area. But this ain't bear country so that would be pretty interesting.

mythbuster from Utopia, Oz, You Decide on June 02, 2009:

What the heck...??? How did I miss these? (Probably 'cos I'm still on the trail of Springheel Jack or something?). These creatures sound interesting. Thanks for sharing...update as soon as you can, okay? I'm bookmarking this stuff *done* Nice vids, and I'm off to the hoax-site for a little double-checking. Wow that vid really is nice. (Um, the horse-cat thingy - that one didn't do good stuff for me lol)

Dolores Monet (author) from East Coast, United States on February 20, 2009:

not so much undiscovered they just didn't know what it was

Cris A from Manila, Philippines on February 20, 2009:

Interesting story. Although at this day and age it seems hard to believe that an undiscovered species still exists specially in place not so remote from civilization. Thanks for sharing :D
