PhD MathEd students celebrate International Day of Mathematics

BICOL UNIVERSITY, Legazpi City – Graduate students, Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education had celebrated the International Day of Mathematics, with the theme “Mathematics is everywhere”, on March 14, 2020. The celebration has commenced with the opening program – Mr. Engelbert T. Baloloy, PhDMathEd President delivered his opening remarks highlighting the importance of Mathematics in various facets of life; followed by Ms. Aiko B. Adonis, PhDMathEd student, explaining the purpose of the celebration.

Professor Dioleta B. Borais, in her message, underscored the importance of teachers in inspiring the learners to love mathematics. She added that it is a challenge to teachers to make mathematics fun, engaging and meaningful to learners; teachers must be creative, innovative and resourceful to cater the best experience among learners and optimize their learning capabilities.

The activity proper of the celebration is composed of group presentations. The first group demonstrated and presented MATH and ARTS: Creative Origami with Mr. Michael Domanais as presenter. This activity is good for eye and hand coordination, sequencing skills, reasoning, spatial skills, memory, patience and attention skills which are essential in learning mathematics. The Hidden Art of Tangrams was presented by Mr. John Christian D. Santos, representative of the second group. Geometrical Craft, Math-Arte, and Excursions in Sudoku and Dymestifying Mathematical Puzzles were presented by the three other groups, respectively.

Awarding of certificates to the participants followed after the group presentations – presenters of MATH and ARTS: Creative Origami declared as BEST GROUP PRESENTER. The celebration is ended with a simple food party. The masters of ceremony were Ms. Olive N. Mancera and Mr. Rowel S. Ramos, both PhDMathEd students.
