An Introduction

Some people say they can foretell the future as the great Nostradamus did, and some claim they have visions and clairvoyant capability. It is unknown if George Orwell, who wrote the futuristic novel, "Nineteen Eighty-Four," possessed special gifts that allowed him to see into the future, but whether he did or not, many of the things he wrote in his book have come true.

Age of "Big Brother"

It seems that we are truly living in the age of "Big Brother," which was first penned as a fictional character in George Orwell's novel, "Nineteen Eighty-Four." Big Brother was the dictator of Oceania, a totalitarian state where the ruling party had total control of its people. In this novel, every citizen is being constantly watched by those in charge through the use of what Orwell called, telescreens. His novel was published in 1949 and now seems more of a tool for predicting the future than as a book of fiction.

Eyes in The Sky

With today's technology, we can take worldwide trips with Google Maps and other satellite-based images. without leaving our chairs. We can sit at our computers and look down upon our homes from outer space, and even see us and our neighbors standing outside in satellite images taken at a previous time. This is truly an advancement in technology, but with it comes a lack of privacy for everyone

Satellite Imagery

Through satellite imagery, we can see almost anyplace on our planet, see storms, and sometimes even pending catastrophes. With these tools, we have the ability to make preparations for upcoming events, but the government has even more sophisticated hardware and software; some of which are classified, and we don't even know it exists.

Many Fictional Gadgets From The Past Have Become Reality

With the technology of today, many fictional things from the era of the "baby boomers" have come to life. For example, remember "Dick Tracy's" two-way radio watch. Well, we have actually improved on the fictional watch with the invention of "smartwatches," which can function as a phone, computer, and of course, as a watch. Also, if you remember the flip-top communication devices on the original "Star Trek" episodes; we have seen them become reality through the flip phone. So many things from fiction have become real in today's world.

With today's "Smart Speakers," who needs a stereo system, since they can do everything a stereo can do, and much more. Echo devices, along with Alexa, can complete many different applications. Here are some of them:

  • Use them as communication devices, such as a phones
  • Communicate and monitor people in other rooms, and make announcements

Global Positioning Systems (GPS)

Another system that is almost taken for granted in today's society is Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Orwell wrote of similar devices in his book. The GPS has almost eliminated the paper map with its ability to locate positions, give directions, and show the best routes to travel, plus warn of road closures, and traffic jams. Other features of this system are:

Preventing Car Thefts

By installing tracking devices in your vehicle, the GPS can be used to allow locate your car if it is stolen.

Mapping and Surveying

It can be used to map and survey projects and can map highways, rivers, forests, power lines, and much more.

Aircraft also use GPS to navigate and allow ground stations and other aircraft to identify their locations.

If you are lost in a forest, GPS devices can show your location and give you directions on finding your way out of the woods,

Other Applications

Only a few of the capabilities of GPS have been listed, and there are many more.
