My Unforgettable Experience at Orlando Florida's AdventHealth Hospital

Nurse's Appreciation Week May 6-12, 2022

When I was in Florida Hospital in February 2014---I did not have nurses--I had Angels. They were Dr. Cole's Nurses and my Angels. I want to thank them again for all their tender care. They were never still because they had other people to Angel over.

My Angel Nurses were: Chris, Dee (I was lucky to have Dee twice) Jessica, Kelly and Nicole; whom I cannot express in accolades extraordinary enough to honor their gentleness and excellent service.

I hope these Angels are still nurses because they were the best. And they worked for the best--Dr. Cole.

Best wishes to you all and your love ones.

Thanks Dr. Cole

Just an update Dr. Cole. My leg is wonderful, and I am forever thankful God gave me you as my surgeon that February 11, 2014.

May you and your loved ones have a happy and healthy life.

May 10, 2022---Dr. Cole- I am going full blast working in my yard, cutting limbs, and small trees then, dragging them to my back yard.

My leg with your special plate and screws is doing great so far-so good. When you have the best surgeon---that is what you get perfection.

With the greatest affection to all--until I write again--take care.

My Accident

I broke my leg on February 11th, 2014 by stepping off my back porch, which is 3 feet from the ground. And, I am not sharing details about the bumpy road of incompetence I endured on my painful journey; before I made it to Florida Hospital.

My surgery was on February 28th by the brilliant and talented Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. J. Dean Cole and his excellent staff. I thank God every day for Dr. Cole and Florida Hospital.

AdventHealth is the new name for Florida Hospital. I really don't care what it is called as long as the best surgeon is there: Dr. J. Dean Cole.

It is six years after my surgery on my broken leg--which was broken twice in one day. And, because I had the 'Cream of the Crop' surgeon I am still doing excellent.

Thanks to Dr. J.Dean Cole. And, if you happen to read this--a Trillion Thanks for giving me a life worth living with your excellent care.

Florida Hospital in Orlando is Now AdventHealth

Dr. J. Dean Cole---My Orthopedic Surgeon

I had a “Right Tibia Plateau Fracture Open Reduction Internal Fixation by Dr. Cole on 2/28/2014.” He put a plate and two screws he invented in my knee, and I thank God for his genius mind and his desire to help others. I have learned a great lesson, which is---“Pay Attention” always look ahead and become aware where you are stepping and slow down---slowing down for a hyper-person had been difficult; until now.

Florida Hospital in Orlando and Dr. Cole gave me superior care before and after surgery. That is one reason they are the Best Hospital in Florida.

A million thanks to the best surgeon in the world and person. His calm manner soothed my hyper-tangled-nerves. A brilliant soft spoken man and all who had him for a surgeon sang his praises in the waiting room every time I had an appointment.

Past Hospital Experience

My worst fear was being in a hospital again and dealing with the attitudes, noise and lack of concern for the ones at the mercy of the doctors and nurses, in other words, been there and done that---not a good experience. However, I had faith that my God would be with me through it all no matter the negativity I had to endure.

The Risk of Blood Clots

My precious sister Paula and John her husband whom I’ve been blessed to have in my life took me to Orlando for my appointment on February 27th. Dr. Cole wanted me to come to Orlando on Wednesday the 26th---the day he viewed my referral information because he was worried about blood clots. Blood Clots kill more people each year that breast cancer, auto accidents and aids. My sister was working so I could not go on the 26th.

We arrived at 7:30 am at 2501 North Orange Avenue, my sister got a wheelchair for me, and I carefully stepped out of their UV into the chair. Since I had fallen twice on February 11th and made my bad break worse---I was very careful getting in and out of vehicles.

A Nurse's Kindness

We were early---so when we entered the hospital---the hall was vacant because we were on the doctors side of the hospital; and we looked a little lost I am sure. A nurse on her way to work stopped and asked if she could help us. She went up in the elevator with us and showed us Dr. Cole’s office. We were amazed at her kindness as we entered his office.

Meeting Dr. Cole

We were soon met by the person who took us to the surgery waiting area so Dr. Cole could view my x-rays and then talk with me. We waited until he finished his surgery because he was seeing me in between surgeries; as Thursday was scheduled for operations.

I was so impressed by his staff by this time that I felt I would like him. And, when he walked into the room we were waiting in; he was so polite, and told me what he would do for my leg. I have to say before he walked in my heart was pounding in dread, but I did not want my sister to know how I felt, so I kept a positive attitude. (But she knows me better than I know myself sometimes.)

He told us to register and they would take care of me from there. Registering was easy and quick---and we were told it would be hours before a bed was available as it was a heavy surgical day; I am sure this is common. But after meeting Dr. Cole and feeling secure that he would take care of me---I would gladly wait.

I feel meeting Dr. Cole and being his patient soared as one of the best blessings in my life. The people in this hospital are unbelievable as caring, kind and helpful. I recommend this hospital highly because you are not just a name in a room number---you are special and taken care of my nurses who are Angels.

God's Spirit

To use up some time---we went to the Welch Cafeteria, on the first floor---which had a great selection. However, on our way there I suppose we were looking around as if we were lost, and again someone stopped and walked us to our destination. By this time I told my sister and brother-in-law there was more to this hospital that we knew about because I could feel the spirit of God everywhere as we travel through the people.

Not only did I see the physical beauty of the outside gardens with statues that depicted the essence of creation, but I felt the ones who worked inside had a calmness that only believing in God can bring one. It was such a joy to see the smiling faces, as we watched others as they showed their kindness in helping in different ways; while we quietly ate our food.

My Room #714

Finally, I was taken to a room # 1314 to have an EKG, blood extracted, BP taken, and other various routine tests. During this time I met more nice people. One Doctor was outstanding and his name was: Dr. Ramiro Zurita, and he asked me if I wanted to talk to or pray with a chaplain. I said “No thank you.” And, I suppose an explanation was fourth coming, but I was so tired my brain did not function at its normal hyper level. I hope he did not think badly of me. I did not feel the need to bother a chaplain, when I felt God’s presence and I had talked to him all day.

Next, I was taken to my room #714 and my sweet sister and brother-in-law were so tired I told them to get a hotel room for the night, but they wanted to travel the long distance back to North-West Florida and return in the morning. Suddenly, I was without my sister and as soon as they walked out my nurse for the night came in an introduced herself, and wrote her name on the board and told me what number to call if I needed her before she returned, she smiled as she started out the room and asked if I wanted my door closed and I said. “Yes.”

Angel Nurses

I thought the nurse’s station would be noisy as from my previous experience in other hospitals---but it was so quiet I fell asleep. My nurse or should I correctly say, “My Angel” returned to take care of my medical needs. In the day hours they came every hour to check on me and at night every two hours.

My Angel Nurses were: Chris, Dee (I was lucky to have Dee twice) Jessica, Kelly and Nicole; whom I cannot express in accolades extraordinary enough to honor their gentleness and excellent service. I saw their true spirits as they went about their work quietly---I am still amazed at their patience, thoughtfulness, and enthusiasm with everyone. I will not be forgetting these Angels any time soon.

My Surgery---Friday Night

Dr. Cole and his staff of surgeons operated on my leg Friday night and were finished around 9:30 and I was happy to wake up with Dee as my nurse; a familiar face is reassuring when feeling completely helpless after surgery. Before, my surgery I prayed for Dr. Cole, his surgeons, nurses and the anesthesiologist. And, then---I said “I am yours Lord, whatever he planned for me --- I was not afraid.”

Dr. Cole came by early to check my leg and changed my bandage, with some of his staff. It blows my mind that he is everywhere. Could he have a twin brother? I am sure his gentle spirit and knowing when he should put things down and rest keeps him healthy and refreshed.

Amazing Dr. Cole and His Staff

Before I left the hospital Dr. Cole made arrangement with a Home Health Agency for a Nurse and Physical Therapist visits. And, I can tell you these people from Pinnacle Home Care are the greatest. Without Christy my nurse and the instructions from my physical therapists, Bruce and Katherine, I would still be lying in bed wondering what to do. My Florida Hospital physical therapists Bonnie and Ron were skillful at showing me exercises to do, I appreciate their lessons. And, the hospital also had a two-wheel walker delivered at my home for walking and balance therapy per Dr. Cole’s instructions.

I returned for my two week checkup visit, and Dr. Cole said my x-rays were perfect and that made my day. Now I have to work hard with strengthening my leg before my six weeks check-up. Then, I will need therapy to learn to walk again.

Blessings Shared

However, painful, exhausting and impatient I become over the next months, I will not complain. Because while waiting for my two week doctor’s appointment I saw what other had gone through after many surgeries; before they were referred to Dr. Cole. And, now they were able to walk again, or have use of their limbs after an accident. After hearing their experiences---I kept very quiet about my broken leg---hoping that no one would notice me. However, they wanted to know what happened to my leg so I told them.

An Internal Device for Limb Lengthening

Dr. Cole holds patents to more than a dozen surgical devices and invents therapy for his patients when there is none available to use. One of his popular inventions is the Intramedullary Skeletal Kinetic Distractor (ISKD) it is an internal device for limb lengthening. This device is the only one per my research that is approved by the FDA.

Last Appointment with Dr. Cole---June 11, 2014

June 11th was my last appointment with Dr. Cole at Florida Hospital in Orlando. Once again my dear sister Paula and her husband John drove me to an appointment.

After nine treatments at Nature Coast Rehabilitation I walked for Dr. Cole across the room. I believe he was as pleased about it as my sister and I. It had been a long journey and he secured the path for my recovery.

There are no words to express my appreciation for what he did for me and my family. He has helped many people and made their lives better. I know this because in his waiting room patients shared why each was there to see Dr. Cole. His work is praised by everyone and that is why he is famous. He makes every patient feel special when he makes his morning stops in every room on his floor.

Dr. Cole has the finest staff of surgeons, nurses, support staff and office personnel. It is apparent if you work for him---you are the best; the cream of the crop.

God Bless Dr. Cole and his staff and Florida Hospital in Orlando.

Dear Bobbi (March 24)

Thank you, sweet friend, for your support. Nothing would suit me more than to have my poems published, but you know as I do that there are hordes of scam artists in our world and online who talk a good talk, but after you invest your money for their help, they vanish.

But continue to pray that this will become a reality, but listen. I want YOU to be blessed, up and around and back on HP for I MISS YOU.

I will pray for you first.

Please try to have a restful night and know that YOU are on my heart and mind.

Hi, Bobbi,

"Thank you for your sweet and moving comment. No. I do not have a book of poetry yet for the simple reason I do not know the avenues or protocol in order to talk to a reliable publishing agent or company."

"But I would love it. And to prove it. I would donate 10% of the royalties to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. These children ARE that special to me."

"Do keep in touch with me, dear Bobbi. I appreciate you."

Barbara Purvis Hunter (author) from Florida on March 24, 2017:

Hi Kenneth,

I will and you stay in touch. Your poems are great. Do you have a book of poems written, yet?

I hope all is well with you and your love ones. Family is what life is about. If I didn't have my Angel sister I would be lost.

Take Care and have a wonderful weekend.

Very thankful for the surgeon's skill and attention to detail, but am still working to heal from some of the flouroquinolone side effects, yet very thankful that I did not suffer from that as some have! Re the surgery--little did I know how sick I was and how much better I would feel in that respect. So grateful!

A happy, healthy New Year to you and yours, as well!

Barbara Purvis Hunter (author) from Florida on January 09, 2015:

Hi RTalloni,

I am sorry to hear about your surprising surgery. And, I hope you are well now. I was so lucky to be in Florida Hospital and I am on my way to a full recovery.

I wish you the best 2015---be happy and healthy.

RTalloni on January 09, 2015:

So glad to read of how well you are doing! Both my children were born at this hospital years ago and I am not surprised to hear that they have continued to expand and grow their quality health-care programs. Everything has pros and cons, and one of my regrets about leaving that area was that our new area does not have that system of hospitals.

Last year I had an emergency situation that required unexpected surgery. I wrote about the side effects of the antibiotic I was given, and have considered writing about the entire hospital experience because I believe that discussions can help both patients and health-care institutions/workers. The problem is that I actually want to put the experience out of my mind! You can believe that I thought about Orlando's Florida Hospital system at the time.

Hi Bobbi,

Very sorry to hear about your leg. I hope you are recovering well. I'm glad you had a great experience with Florida Hospital Orlando. I feel they are a really good hospital. I have been there a few times to visit family, as well as the Florida Waterman, which is also a nice hospital.

The Florida hospitals do seem to have a caring staff that make patients and visitors feel comfortable.

Best wishes for a full recovery. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Look after your leg, it is great you are back walking, we need to be careful, the saying "Look before you Leap" is a must as we grow older, it is so easy to trip. You certainly had excellence treatment at that Florida hospital.

You are so right about being strong, what would a family be like if we were not strong. I'm looking forward to a long friendship with all my new found friends here on HubPages. I will be 74 tomorrow, 10 September in NZ.

Barbara Purvis Hunter (author) from Florida on September 08, 2014:

Hi Elsie Hagley,

I am happy you are doing well. I fell off my back porch and broke my leg, then the same day after my sister picked me up from the ER I fell again trying to go up my steps on one leg, so I broke it more. It was a mess. I was in a wonderful hospital by being refer. I have a plate and two screws in my legs. I just finished 3 months of rehab and can walk again. To say it has been a challenge is an understatement.

However, we strong women have to keep going for ourselves and family. I feel like standing up and singing :I am Woman, hear me roar."

I have to say that is a wonderful smile you have---it makes me happy just to see it.

Have a wonderful week and a great time meeting Hubbers---they are great just like your friends.

Nice to read about a happy customer.Where you in a private hospital? I had my tibia bone in the ankle broken in two different places and had a plate fitted, it is still there in my ankle today, that was three years ago last February. Good Morning Kenneth,

I am so sorry to hear of your battle with Fibromyalgia and Neurothopy. My cousin Marti has Fibromyalgia and I know what she faces each day.

It is great that you have such a wonderful family to support and care about you. I have always been the one who took care of my family; but since I broke my leg on February 11, I know how great one's family can be. If I didn't have my sister Paula and her husband John---I would be lost.

I hope Dave is doing well. I can tell you I was lucky to have Dr. Cole as my surgeon---he has helped so many. It is great when one feels like a person---not just a number when hurt or ill. I had Angels for my nurses---I kept looking for their wings. My best wishes to you both. I did not think about letting anyone know I was in the Florida Hospital, but I told the nurses about my favorite writers and told them to read more online as we all like to talk. I still have not told some of my friends---I just don't like talking about myself.

Have a great Easter with your babies.

Thank you Bill, and I can tell you it has been an experience I do not wish to repeat. It is great to feel strong enough to write again, even for a short while each time.

Take Care;

Bobbi.....So sorry to learn of your mishap and injury. As I read, my leg began to ache in sympathy....that happens to me all the time. I admit my level of empathy is a bit off the charts.

How fortunate for you that this wonderful hospital, Dr and staff were accessible to you! Your heart-warming experience, I'm sure you know, is a rare one. I am very impressed with the outstanding care you were given and the "success" of your surgery.

I just know you will heal soon and be back to feeling like the HAPPY, sweet Bobbi we have all come to know and love......I send you hugs and wishes of wellness & total recovery.......Peace, Paula

(I was touched by your comments about your sister, "Paula" (nice name!).....because whenever I speak of my late (& sadly missed ) sister & BEST friend, I always use the term "precious" before her name or the word, "sister." I see you and I share the beautiful blessing of a "precious sister." To me, it is one of my greatest gifts in I know how you treasure her)

Hi Bobbi, Ouch!! I can't imagine the pain you were in, I'm sorry for that. I'm glad you had a pleasant experience at Florida Hospital Orlando. If I knew you were there I would have stopped by to say hello, Dave's oncologist is there and we are there often. Our last pleasant experience inpatient, was at Florida Hospital East Orlando, when Dave had his total knee replacement. The staff accommodated the patient and his wife for 3 days and 2 nights. Florida Hospital is a great hospital. I've heard of Dr. Cole and I'm glad he fixed you up well. Best of luck with your recovery. As a fellow hyperactive person I understand how accidents happen :)

Well my friend, I'm very sorry to hear about your accident, but so happy that you were treated so well. Wishing you a full recovery and much happiness on the road ahead.
