MICHELANGELO and pictures of some of his works
Michelangelo was born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni on the 6th of March 1475 in Caprese ( Italy) His family had for several generations been small-scale bankers in Florence, but his father failed to maintain the bank's financial status, and held occasional government positions. At the time of Michelangelo's birth, his father was the judicial administrator of the small town of Caprese. Several months after Michelangelo's birth the family returned to Florence where Michelangelo was raised. At a tender age, he moved in with another family during the illness and later death of his mother Francesca. While his father wanted him to study grammar, his real interest lies in the arts. His father considered this below the family's status and tried to discourage him. However, Michelangelo prevailed and was apprenticed at the age of thirteen to Domenico Ghirlandaio the most fashionable painter in Florence at the time. This was the early beginning; he would go on to study more, excelled and started making name for himself at a very young age. Michelangelo worked on so many projects and some he never finished because of the vast number of projects from clients that he could not turn down. He was the undisputed master of drawing in the 16th century Italy. He was one of the greatest sculptors of the Italian Renaissance and one of its greatest painters and architects. His work on the Sistine Chapel ceiling is a masterpiece and one of the most famous work of art till date. He wrote a lot of poems during his lifetime and excelled in poetry, sculpture, painting, and architecture. He died on the 18th of February 1564 at the age of 88

No doubt Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo were two of the greatest that ever lived. I know we are not experts, but judging from their works here, WHO WOULD YOU SAY IS THE GREATEST MASTER from these two?
Gene Voce on May 10, 2017:
Because Michelangelo considered himself primarily a sculptor, his approach to painting revolutionized art with a physicality none of his predecessors displayed. In The Uffizzi Gallery in Florence the art of Rafael can be categorized as pre-Sistine Chapel and post-Sistine Chapel.
Leonardo was not as influential. Because he tended to experiment with new paints and media many of his works have not stood up to the test of time.
Back in The Uffizzi, with all the great art on display, one painting by Michelangelo Morisi di Caravaggio is enough to put any other art to shame.

Part of the art of living...is living with art. Both are masters and shouldn't be compared, but admired for the beauty they broight into the world with their art. Art is subjective so no one is right or wrong here. It's a preference...as an art dealer for over 30 years, there's no way to see through someone elses eyes and we all view beauty in different ways. They both ROCK! That's the truth.

Michelangelo was better than Da Vinci Because he is painter and also a better ascultper

I think they are both great but I like Michaelangelo is better.
James on September 04, 2014:
DaVinci was inventive, but very rarely finished anything or created any actual invention. He had ideas and wrote them down and drew them. There are diverse ideas in them and they evidence an ingeniously creative mind, to be sure. Still, those who say his inventions changed the world go a bit far as most of his papers of this kind were found only after inventions like them were actually made by others. We don't have those things because of daVinci. He completed very little. What he did complete, of paintings, are treasured as much for their inventive technique as any artistic skill. I don't find the Mona Lisa or The Last Supper anywhere near as aesthetically pleasing as The Sisine Chapel works by Michelangelo. In sculpture, there is obviously no comparison, with The David, The Pieta, Moses, The Prisoners, and so many other masterpieces making Michelangelo one of, if not the greatest sculpture in history. Then there is St. Peter's. When you have the greatest single display of painting in the world (Sistine Chapel), the most celebrated sculptures in the world, and designed what is considered one of the greatest architectural triumphs in the world, nobody else can claim to be a greater artist. Then, just to add to his creative talents, he wrote hundreds of poems. And they are of very good quality, both in form and matter. daVinci does not compare artistically to Michelangelo, and for all daVinci's inventive genius, very few things are attributed to him as inventor because he finished or implemented so very little. His genius of creating designs for so many things that COULD have changed the world and later did without him is impressive, but not as impressive as the actual accomplishments of the greatest artist of all time.

Accoriding to my opinion,I think leonardo da vinci has the biggest impact on the field of science and arts as he is a universal genius.
Joel Patrick on April 06, 2014:
I give a slight edge to Michelangelo on art alone. Overall, though, De Vinci wins as a complete and diversified genius on a wide variety of subjects, including engineering, astronomy, mathematics, etc. in addition to art. De Vinci's IQ ranks up there with Aristotle and maybe one or two others in the entire history of mankind.
[Unkown] on March 14, 2014:
in my opinion, these two are the greatest painters of all times, but think of it. Micheal made outstanding paintings and sculptures, but Leonardo da Vinci, even with his few paintings, those paintings gave us a huge impact in religion and painting. da Vinci even made blueprints for inventions like the flying machine(did't work though), and even parachutes and tanks. All these idea and our courage today to create more and more inventions , all thanks to him. Without him, there'd be no inspiration for us people to make our life worthy of living by helping people.
They were both great artists but i think Leonardo da Vinci is way better.
bob on March 09, 2014:
Leonardo was the first to think of the flying machine, he never got it to work.

asdfghjkl on February 10, 2014:
Michelangelo wanted to be remembered for his sculptors not his painting since he hated it. Da Vinci had a brilliant mind and sketches. Leonardo surpassed his master that taught him and keep in mind he didn't go to regular schooling like the others. Michelangelo did, and was more religious than Da Vinci so he didn't do as many autopsies as Da Vinci to learn more about the structure of the human body. Da Vinci is known as the Renaissance Man and it was all about art. Da Vinci was a better painter and thinker ( some of the best are the Frescos for the two evening out the playing field. The sistine Chapel and the last supper were done in the same way.) Michelangelo was the best sculptor in my opinion, what he wanted to remembered for.
Srivathsan Rangarajan on January 04, 2014:
Both the artists were equally brilliant. Look at their works... mona lisa and the last supper of Da vinci and David and Pieta of Michelangelo... They are an onlooker's delight....If the smile of mona lisa were to be called enigmatic what say of the sharp focus of David (the physiq of david is more conspicuous than that of david himself)......If virginity and grief of pieta were to be lauded what of ripples of commotion and anxiety of the distraught followers of christ in the last supper....an artist can be better than another but no genuine work of art can be better than another.....

AMWELL128 on March 28, 2013:
Remember, Michelangelo had to conceive of the idea how to paint the ceiling first with all of the images. He also had to know the dimensions of the ceiling. Therefore, he couldn't just start painting, he had to come up with the biblical story first for each panel. Then, he painted his masterpiece using scaffolding 60 feet in the air. So, he will always be the greatest artist.
