Ziggurat Model

Easy Pyramid Made of Craft Foam

Does your child need a project for history or geography class? Perhaps your Sunday School class is discussing the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and you want a visual aid. Here is a simple pyramid model that is fun to make.

Pyramids and ziggurats were built by many different civilizations, including the Egyptian, Mayan, and Babylonian cultures. This project is made of simple materials you can find at a craft or big-box store and requires only measuring, cutting, and gluing skills. Even young elementary students can make a foam ziggurat as long as an adult checks the measuring and marking before the child cuts the foam.

Materials Needed

  • 5 sheets of brown craft foam, approximately 9 by 12 inches each,
  • liguid glue such as Elmer's Glue-All or tacky glue,
  • brown spray paint, and
  • a small container of craft sand, in tan or beige

Tools Needed

  • sharp scissors or shears (or craft knife)
  • ruler
  • pen or pencil for marking.

Measure and Cut

From one sheet of foam, measure and cut the base square as large as possible, i.e. eight to nine inches square, depending on the size of an individual foam sheet. From the next sheet of foam, cut a square one inch smaller than the base square. Cut three or four more squares from the other sheets, with each successive square one inch smaller than the previous square.

Glue and Paint

Glue squares on top of one another in order, from largest to smallest. Be sure squares are centered so that about 1/2 inch of the previous square shows all around. Make steps by cutting small rectangles from scraps of leftover foam. The model shown includes an enclosed room on the top of the pyramid, again made from scraps of foam.

Take the model outside and spray with paint. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle sand all over the model. Let dry completely. The project is finished.
