Index - JBK - Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis
Jacqueline Kennedy is often celebrated for her fashion and her jewelry.Jackie's fame really transcends far beyond fashion and jewelry and being the wife of the 35th President of the United States.
Jackie's image is enduring because her image transcends material items and social status. The standards of excellence she chose for herself and her family set her apart. She was fascinate by the arts, literature and history. Jackie was a debutante, a woman of the very wealthy and of an upper-class background. She was trained by her father Black Jack (her father's nick name - real name was John Vernou Bouvier III) to command a room, to walk into a room and beamed like a lighthouse. Her Mother detailed the proper jewelry and clothing.
“Elegance is not limited solely to a womens’ wardrobe, it is as much the way she conducts herself and her way of life.”
Coco Chanel
Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco " Chanel (August 19, 1883 – January 10th 1971), a pioneering French fashion designer.
"The only routine with me is no routine at all."

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all."

"Whenever I was upset by something in the papers, Jack always told me to be more tolerant, like a horse flicking away flies in the summer."

Being a reporter seems a ticket out to the world.

Can anyone understand how it is to have lived in the White House and then, suddenly, to be living alone as the President's widow?
~Jackie Kennedy
Dear God, please take care of your servant John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
~Jackie Kennedy
Even though people may be well known, they hold in their hearts the emotions of a simple person for the moments that are the most important of those we know on earth: birth, marriage and death.
~Jackie Kennedy
He didn't even have the satisfaction of being killed for civil rights. it had to be some silly little Communist.
~Jackie Kennedy
I always wanted to be some kind of writer or newspaper reporter. But after college... I did other things.
~Jackie Kennedy
I don't think there are any men who are faithful to their wives.
~Jackie Kennedy
I don't understand it. Jack will spend any amount of money to buy votes but he balks at investing a thousand dollars in a beautiful painting.
~Jackie Kennedy
To showcase her independence and sense of propriety, legend has it that on the first night in the White House, she and John F. Kennedy were not speaking because JFK wanted her to wear a pair of earrings twice in a row. Jackie choose the company of a select few, valued her family above all items. While she could not wear a cross, she insisted that her daughter Caroline wear a cross which she still does even to this day.
Jackie was educated at the best schools: at Chapin, Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, and Vassar and obtain her degree from George Washington University.
In 1951 Jackie beat out more than twelve hundred of the college women in America to take first place in Vogue’s Prix de Paris competition, with her essay on “People I Wish I Had Known”.
The most stunning thing about Jackie was not the jewelry, the clothing, the most stunning and memorable thing is her love for JFK
and her preservation of his memory and strength during a time of great mourning yet she and her family had to continue in the public eye. When
life hit her hard, she rose to the challenge - that is the enduring charm of this great lady. It was her exquisite manners, the boundaries and guidelines she set for herself and her family. While acutely intelligence and very accomplished both in creativity (photography) and in languages (she was fluent in more than 3 languages), her real style, her lasting legacy was how she gracefully handled the death of her prominent husband, the 35th President of the United States of America. Jackie was only 34years old at the time of John F. Kennedy's
death. We continue to be fascinated by her clothing, her jewelry but most of all the strong and independent woman that Jackie was.
Jackie’s enduring image, however, goes far beyond fashion. Her incomparable style influenced everything she did-the people she chose to spend time with, the way she entertained, the books she read, how she handled key events in her life and of course, the manner in which she brought up her children. Her wit, her exquisite manners, and her acute intelligence were all apart of her style. As the legendary designer Coco Chanel so aptly is quoted as once saying:
“ Elegance is not limited solely to a womens’ wardrobe, it is as much the way she conducts herself and her way of life.”

Jackie Kennedy's Legendary 3 Strand Pearl Necklace
$211,500 for a faux pearl necklace - the one and only - the 17"
triple–strand simulated pearl necklace - Jackie Kennedy's signature piece. And
from historical photos shown at the right, you can see, this necklace was
certainly one of Jackie's favorites. Journey with me as we explore the photos
of Jackie wearing this updated classic and among other celebrities, learn about
the auction price in six-digits - yes, that is correct - six-digits for a faux
strand of pearls and learn about the unparalleled beauty of Czechoslovakia Glass
Pearls. The $211,500 is what was paid at auction for Jackie's faux pearl necklace.
"The History of the Original
This necklace was Jackie’s signature piece of jewelry. Her original set was faux pearls. More than a century ago, after a hand-painting process was perfected in what would become Czechoslovakia; the wealthy began wearing faux pearls because it was particularly difficult to find pearls properly matched in color or size. When Jackie was a debutante, Kokichi Mikimoto had not yet perfected his cultured pearl process, so the wealthy continued to use the glass-based pearls from Czechoslovakia.
Jackie had many sets of pearls besides this one, and each had a special purpose or size. The set she wore and enjoyed the most is the design you see here. The three lengths are not uniformly set, as there is a larger space between the inner strand and the other two. The reason for this space was so she could wear the pearls in the manner of Coco Chanel.
Coco Chanel, a top designer that Jackie adored, devised a set of pearls in the same configuration so the lower string could be pulled up and over the upper string to produce a very special and sophisticated look. This only works well with the aforementioned gap.

JFK - Connecting the Continents One Acre in England
Jacqueline Kennedy's life (wife of former US President John F. Kennedy commonly referred to as JFK) was fairy-tale and is often referred to as Camelot in visual parallel to the "American royalty" life that she lead. Her life, her jewelry are items that continue to fascinated us worldwide even today. Her life and her jewelry holds a great deal of history including the beautiful sapphire cross depicted above.
One of the more beautiful pieces in Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's jewelry collection, is a very piece with allot of great history of sharing between nations, a gift of true royalty, a gift from the Queen Mother of England!
"A Gift From a Queen" - A Beautiful Cross and A Piece of Land Within Britain
It was the Queen Mother who gave Jackie this beautiful cross. And this cross is one of the most stunning in a large and expansive collection of Jackie Kennedy's. While within her lifetime, Jackie was given countless gifts of jewelry, the gift of this cross (from the Queen Mother) was accompanied by the gift of the land, a very historical piece of land, a gift to the American people from people of England. While only one acre, the historical significance to the freedom that our forefathers and our soldiers even today have fought for is important. The one acre is at Runnymede, residing next to the very same location as the signing of the Magna Carta

Jacqueline Kennedy Remains Forever in History Yet Active in Our Hearts and Minds
One woman can make a difference.
Jacqueline Kennedy's preservation of the White House, preservation of Grand Central Station in New York City and the overall historic preservation movement was grandly inspired by one great and independent lady. A lady who valued art, history and literature. A lady who put family before all else. A lady who is remembered today beyond her fashion flair, beyond her jewelry, beyond her elegance, a lady who is remembered for her independence and noble ambitions for her husband.
As Hugh Sidney wrote in 1994 about hand written notes from Theodore H. White and his interview with Ms. Kennedy: "No small portion of the glamour of the Kennedy stewardship that lives on today came from her standards of public propriety and majesty."

Pollyannalana,
You make a good point - we learned through Jackie. Like you I was just a child when he died.
Those rumors of Bobby and Jackie I find hateful. Myself, I was a widow many years ago. I have remained very close to my brother-in-law. The inference that the love we share is more than family love is from someone who doesn't understand the great loss of a great man.
Rumors sadly make a story and make money - I see no purpose for that negativity.
Bobby the brains - hmmmm, good point.
You are wise - the consolation is a deep bond - between any family members. The loss of a father figure with small children probably drove Jackie closer to Bobby. While she was hurting - she was most concerned for her children - her children have always been her stated priority.
You have a grounded perspective - thank you so much for sharing and stopping by.
Pollyannalana from US on October 06, 2010:
I was not even a teen when he died, but she was the one who made a child find out what a President was. I watched her then all through her life. It really took strength to go through with what we know she did. She surely knew of her husbands affair or affairs and if not then the shame after he died. I always admired her too, she was America's royalty to me. With all that was supposedly wrong with JFK's back it sure didn't slow him down, did it? Odd too that after JFK's death, Bobby and someone else went to see Marilyn Monroe just before her death, the very day of. I think there was something to that. Not that I think Bobby personally had anything to do with it and I loved Bobby, he was the brains behind Jack I think and although there was rumors of him and Jackie, I think they both loved JFK so and consoled each other and he helped her with her grief and the rumors of her husband.
