Importance of Counselling in our Life

As man is a social creature and he must live in a social environment in which he deals with things around him and play his role in different ways. As a member of society he faces numerous problems in his life regarding his personality, personal life, relations and with respect to his environment as well which effects his personality, his mental wellbeing and physical wellbeing as well.

When we confront any physical problem in our life, we consult with a physician and attempt to resolve our physical problem. But most of the problems within the society are mental problems which are also called psychological problems like stress, depression, anxiety, aggression, communication problems, trauma etc.

In case of physical problems we consult with a specialist and get medication to cure our physical problem but when we confront any mental or psychological problem we consult with a psychologist or psychiatrist and what we get from him? Medicine? No. We get from him counselling. Yes counselling which is not a medicine, which is a therapy.

Today in this article we are going to discuss about counselling. First we define it…

Definition of Counselling

“Counselling is a process to assist or guide someone in their physical, emotional, social and mental health issues to improve their sense of well-being, alleviate feelings of distress and resolve crises of physical and mental health”.

Counseling is additionally called talking therapy or treatment in which a psychologist helps the individual by talking with him. In this process the psychologist or a psychiatrist listen the individual or client and try to resolve his conflicts or clashes. In counseling, a psychologist try to change the thinking pattern of an individual and convert his negative thoughts into positive thoughts by breaking his beliefs. This process is occurred through talking only, no medicines are involved in it. That’s why it is also considered as talking therapy because only talking is involved within the whole process. This technique is considered very helpful in the field of psychology and it is very effective to cure different psychological issues or problems.

One more thing is that counselling is not giving advice and being judgmental with a client but it is being sincere and have empathy with individual.

Some people think counselling and psychotherapy are same techniques but that’s not true there is a difference between both of them…

Difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling is a short term process, on the other hand psychotherapy is a long term process. Counselling involved with less swear problems and psychotherapy deals with swear problems. In counseling, a psychologist or psychiatrist deal with the individual who can think rationally and can make his choices by himself but in psychotherapy a psychologist deals with the person who cannot even think rationally and cannot take his choices by himself.

Types of Counselling

Counselling has different types according to the scenario and situations. These types are as follows

1) Individual Counseling

2) Couple Counselling

3) Family Counselling

4) Group Counselling

1) Individual Counseling

Individual counselling in which a psychologist deals with one person (one-on-one) and try to provide support and guidance to him/her. In individual counselling, individual be able to cope his or her problems. A psychologist try to help an individual in his or her personal, social or work problems. These problems can be career challenge, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, relationship problems etc. Individual expresses what comes in his mind and counsellor try to get more and more information to resolve the problem.

2) Couple Counselling

Couple counselling is also called marriage counselling. As we know when two individuals get married and they become a couple. In the journey of life we all face different problems during our life. Same as that couple also face different problem like adjustment problems, relationship problems, sexual problems and behavior problems. When they confront these problems and their life get disturbed and conflicts and misunderstandings are created between them. To resolve and cope these problems they require couple counselling. In couple counselling a psychologist talk with both of them and try to resolve conflicts between them. He tries to make them be able to understand each other and move forward by understanding the ups and downs in life.


3) Family Counselling

Family therapy or family counseling is a form of treatment that is designed to address particular issues or problems affecting the metal health, physical health and functioning of a family. It is utilized to help a family through their troublesome period, a major transition, mental or behavioral health problems in family members (“Family Therapy”, 2014).

We see a lot of machines around us and we know a machine work legitimately when its every part is at its proper place and work productively. Only in this way we can get a good output. But on the other hand, if the one part or more than one parts are not on the right place or not work properly then the whole machine is disturbed and we can’t get output from it. If we don’t take care of it and don’t fix it with a mechanic then it gets worse and worse. Similarly Family is also like a machine in which if all parts means all members are work together and live together then system works very well but if there is a problem with one person then whole family get disturbed. This problem is might be about one member or might be whole family. When any family based problem is created then family is provided to sort out the matter. These problems might be development or nurture issues, loss of family members, sibling conflicts, behavior problems, adjustment issues etc.

4) Group Counselling

In Group counselling there are 6 to 8 people are involved mostly with the same problem and issue. This counselling way actually utilized for the individual’s self-awareness and awareness with others by sharing and listening the same issues or problems. Group counselling helps individuals to develop communication skills and socialization skills. In this process everyone have a chance to express himself and share his/her feeling and thoughts with others. This thing make him/her to be able to face people and their criticism. Basically this counselling way make individuals confident and increase self-esteem to understand and solve their problems.
