When Europeans arrived in India the education system existed was not modernized. Indians were learned in traditional method of education until the first half of 19th century. After the establishment of British colonial power in India, they thought about to introduce the modern form of education system through the medium of English with the help of influence of Christian Missionaries.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE BEHIND IN THE INTRODUCTION OF ENGLISH EDUCATION
The English East India Company introduced the English education from the period of second quarter of 19th century. During this period the The English East India Company captured more places of India. So, for the smooth administration leading the company required large number of clerks. The company authority found that the importing of manpower to India is very costly. This is one of the important purpose of The English East India Company to introduce English education in India. Because they thought that by the introduction of English education, it is very cheap to create sufficient and qualified workers to recruit for some clerical jobs. At the same they restrict Indians to work in high posts.
Another reason for the introduction of English education was, British thought that their culture is superior to the Indian culture. So, the introduction of English education enables people to learn with a modern view and there by civilize the Indians.
MEDIUM OF MODERN EDUCATION
After decided to introduce modern form of education in India, there arose a debate with in the government of Governor General William Benedick, which medium of language must use to educate Indians. Someone argued that the medium should be the Indian vernacular or local languages and other group of people argued English language should be the medium to introduce modern education in India.
The Governor General William Benedick appointed a commission under the President of Lord Macaulay to study the issue. Finally Lord Macaulay solved this problem in 1935 by the argument of ‘English language should be used to teach western sciences an disciplines. This Lord Macaulay's victory lead to promote English language in India. Especially now we can see attractive and educated Indian speakers from India.
WOODS DES PATCH – MAGNA CAR TA OF ENGLISH EDUCATION IN INDIA
‘Woods Despatch’ is generally considered as the ‘Magna Carta of English education in India’. It is one of the most important step in the history of the modern education in India. And also it is one of the great reform by British in India.
‘Woods Des patch’ is introduced by Charles Woods, the president of Board of Control in 1854 during the Governor General of Lord Dalhousie. By the ‘Woods Des patch’, the company authority gave more importance for the primary education and also the use of English language.
After, the Hunter Commission of 1882-83 by W.W Hunter under the Governor General of Lord Rippon, The Indian Universities Act of 1904 etc. were the strategic steps by the English authority implemented in education field of India.
