How to prepare for JEE MAIN in 40 days

Who the Course is Meant for:

It is presumed that you've been studying with an average motivation for at least one year now. Even if you have not been, you can take to this course and benefit from it.

If you have been studying for a longer period with full concentration you can still change your strategy little bit with this routine and extract the gains thereof.

To put it another way, the course is useful for all aspirants.

Time left:

If we start the count down from about 25th of November and assume the board exams to cover the whole of March then total study time is 67 days up to January 31st, 2013.

Assume that entire February will be used for preparation of the board exam . After the board exam is over, you get to study for 3-4 days in end-March and 6 days in April since JEE MAIN is generally held in the first week of April for PEN AND PAPER mode. Candidates opting for computer based Paper-I may get a few more days.

Thus there are 5(November) +31(December) +31(January) +3-4(March) +6(April) =76-77 days for preparation of JEE MAIN. But there is another factor. Pre-board exams are also held in the month of December-January. So if another 1 month period is also subtracted from 76-77 days we are left with 45-46 days. Out of this, devote about 5 days for the preparation of the pre-board examination which diminishes our schedule to 40-41 days.

Do not panic about the pre-board exam since it's more important to prepare for the ultimate goals of performing better in board exam and JEE MAIN and JEE ADVANCED.

Now we can safely assume the available time to be at least 40 days and move on to plan the 40-day crash course for JEE MAIN. Since there is a good span of time between the announcement of result of JEE MAIN and date of JEE ADVANCED, you will have more time to study for JEE ADVANCED later.

Allotment of left out time per subject:

If you leave out last 10 days, that is, end March and first week of April, for revision of critical points and formulae, you are left with 30 days and average time per subject (P, C, M) is about 10 days.

You can modify your style to any of the following:

1. In a day you may study all the three subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics by dividing the time.

2. You may allow an entire day for a subject and change the subject next day.

3. But in my opinion, allot at least 2 days in a row to either Physics or Chemistry and then 1 day to Mathematics and then again 2 days to Chemistry or Physics. The motive behind this pattern is to make effective headway in Physics or Chemistry. You derive more satisfaction out of your studies when you cover bigger bulks of the syllabus.

Moreover the idea behind giving less time to Mathematics is that you can prepare this subject even while preparing for the board examination. Say, when you are preparing ‘Determinants’ for your board exam you may first solve all the questions from your textbook and then extending the span little bit you can go for solving more questions on the topic from your coaching modules or previous year IIT JEE/ AIEEE question papers.

Students may choose any of the above patterns or have a judicious mix of them as per the suitability.

Hour of the day for different subjects:

I generally prefer to advise my students to study the theoretical subjects in the morning hours as such subjects require more concentration. Chemistry suits this slot best.

Hours during which you feel tired may be allotted to Mathematics since it involves some writing and this subject has the ability to keep you constantly excited and interested.

Physics may be allotted the rest of the time. But remember morning hours are the best to study comparatively tougher things and so these must be used for the portions you are weak at.

Scroll to Continue

Strategy for different subjects:

CBSE Textbooks must be read and understood thoroughly. More so because the change in pattern of score counting is in favour of text books. This will not only help towards 40% weightage of board exam but also be closer and more relevant to the syllabus of JEE MAIN. Moreover CBSE Chemistry textbooks are compiled in a nice manner and provide detailed understanding of the topics.

Do not forget to solve all the exercises given at the back of the chapters. If you have no books for solution you can search with google by typing ‘ ncert solutions’. You will get all the solutions. When you have completed the NCERT books you may go for other books.

For a particular chapter jot down all the formulae, revise them properly and solve as many problems as you can in the available time. Be collective in your approach. That is, if you come across any critical points, note them down in a separate notebook. Such notebook comes very handy on the eve of the examination. Rather than going into difficult and lengthy problems concentrate what you are best at and relevant questions. The end game is not for carrying out experiments.

As I have already said Mathematics may be allotted less time in these 40 days as compared to Physics and Chemistry since its preparation for JEE MAIN may be dragged into board exam preparation to some extent and also since we tend to remember its solutions better than in case of other two subjects..

Some precautions:

1. Use internet only rarely when urgent, as computer heavily fatigues your eyes and brain thereby eating into your effective study time.

2. Use more and more of relaxing mechanisms like deep breathing, light walks, talking to friends etc. It's good not to watch TV during this period.

3. Take light exercise or Yoga and eat healthy food during the preparation time. Do not take much tea or coffee as they increase your nervousness level.

4. Be very systematic and planned in the way you keep your books, notebooks etc. and compile your notes since searching for all these things kept in a clumsy way will eat up your valuable time.

5.The notebooks for 'practical exam' or projects which your school asks you to submit necessarily before the exams, must have been prepared long before the exam dates.

I am the one who prepared for JEE without coaching & at that time there was only one exam for JEE entrance. I worked hard & studied overnights. I was entirely cut off from social life & Appeared in the exam with confidence but I could not crack the exam. Somehow, I still wanted to be in IITs so I appeared in IIT JAM exams after bachelor degree in science. This time I cracked the exam & fulfilled my dream to study in IIts. I would suggest all aspirants to appear in exams like JAM which are easier to crack & has pure science syllabus.

@ankush @manisha

First of all, don't be tense. Tension does not solve problems.

Secondly, the time available is best known to you. Plan it according to your suitability, habits, daily classes and coachings etc. If I prepare a routine, it may not suit you. Spend a full day if required, to plan your routine and tweak it over next 3-4 days when you are adapting to it. Then stick to it strictly. You will be surprised to see the outcome. Best of luck.

@Riya Dhaila

6 months is a big span of time. But you have to plan everything exquisitely. Give weightage to both boards and JeeMain. Make yourself exceptionally skilled at remembering formulae and solving numerical problems. For this you will have to solve lots of numerical problems daily after reading the lessons. Find out a time slot for revision of class 11 chapters and numerical problems too.

Best of luck for all the exams that you are going to take. Knowing about your interests was a pleasure. I advise you to sincerely pursue your interests and side by side keep a vigil on your studies. With modern facilities it is possible to perform well in both. I am currently reading a book 'Connecting the dots' by Rashmi Bansal. It's such an amazing book that when I get into it I don't feel like doing anything else. The book is about the people who pursued their interests and became successful in life. But a word of caution. First and foremost are your studies in the young age. For other things you will get plenty of time later in life. All the best.

I am glad that you are thinking of availing the chance that you still have. Many good students leave out their chance to be the best. If you can somehow carry on with your dream along with your engineering course and given you are damn good at Maths and sound with concepts, I am of the opinion that you can. Try hard and don't worry about the outcome. That's the mantra to succeed. Remember those who are willing to work when it is still dark in the morning, are the first people to see the rising sun.

Though it is difficult to tell at this stage due to increased number of candidates and the altered way of score calculation, going by last year's AIEEE scores a score of 150 might have landed you somewhere between 30,000 to 60,000. Now you can use this rank to get a feel of branch and college that you may get using the following link;

But there may be a world of difference this time.

Anyway best of luck

Please reply me on

RAJESH CHANDRA PANDEY (author) from India on March 20, 2013:

If you mean 70 or 80 % in board exam, then one can't say for sure. Because top 20 percentile of the board you are appearing from, shall be taken into account. As an example, top 20 percentile of CBSE, I hear, comprised of students getting as low as 78% marks last year.

As for admissions into IITs you must first be eligible to appear JEE ADVANCED which requires that

1. You should be in top 20 percentile of your board, and

2. You should be within top 150000 of JEE MAIN subject to reservation of some seats etc.

sonam on March 20, 2013:

i wanna ask if unfortunately the student get percentage in between 70% and 80% is that student is capable for iit and lastly if he scored good marks and pass the iit jee he is cabable for admission??????????????

RAJESH CHANDRA PANDEY (author) from India on February 17, 2013:

I shall advise you to first solve last 10 years' papers of AIEEE. If time permits go for last 10 years' papers of IITJEE. The simple idea is to face the difficulty level of IITJEE and then you may find the level of JEE MAIN fathomable. For maths TMH books provides lots of difficult questions, for Physics you may go for D C Pandey of Arihant. There may be other good books which I'm not aware of. But the fundamental idea is to face bigger difficulty levels than what may be set for JEE MAIN.

Be happy and work hard, all the best.

While trying for the consecutive year you have to be bold. Don't be over awed by statements like "Be careful this time" etc. I have seen many students with mediocre records flying high in their career life. Admissions to IITs and siilar other institutions is a good thing to try but that is not the ultimate thing. If you don't get selected , no problem at all. Exam of life gives you far more wonderful opportunities...

You can try for BITs, VIT, UPES, IIITs etc. other than IITs

Be enthusiastic and courageous, nobody can stop you from achieving success.
