How to Teach Cvc Stories to Children

I am a certified teacher and have been tutoring young children for more than 30 years. I am sharing my experience in the tutorial business.

Make the Story as Simple as You Can:

Teaching reading to young kids is like building blocks. You start with a good and solid foundation; slowly add some blocks until it becomes a tower. If you have laid the foundation right, the tower will not collapse but if you started with the wrong foundation, the tower will surely collapse if you make it too high. You have to go one step at a time as you move up. In short, the story should be very simple for them to read and understand.

In reading, you start with the basic which is reading the alphabet then you move to syllables and words. Next are the phrases and sentences. Finally, you can let the children read a short story. Everything you teach the kids should start with a basic foundation then you go step by step to nurture it.

To young children who are just starting to read their first words (mostly CVCs and simple sight words), a three-sentence story could be a daunting task. You have to make it simple for them so that they will not be intimidated.

First, make the sentences short. Do not mix the CVC words first. If you are teaching CVC- a; use all CVC- a words to avoid confusing the children.

Teaching reading is like building blocks.


Here’s an example:

The man is fat.

The man has a fat cat.

The fat cat is in a vat.

If you noticed, the story above uses all CVC a words with only the very basic sight words that the kids could easily memorize. In the past lessons that I have discussed, I have written about the basic sight words that you should teach the kids when you teach them about phrases and sentences. If you have been following my articles, what I am discussing here is already explained in my previous works.

To make the lesson simple for the young kids; teach all CVC- a words first. If you finish teaching CVC-a words, follow it with the CVC e, CVC-i, CVC-o then finally CVC-u. After that, you can mix all the words. This time you are confident that the children are already equipped with the basic words to use in a more complicated and longer story. Of course, you have to watch the sight words that you use and limit them within the level of the kids’ ability.

  • How to Teach CVC Words to Young Kids
    CVC is the acronym for consonant vowel consonant or the three-letter words such as bag, keg, sip, and sun. Before you can teach children to read CVC words; the kids must have memorized the letters.
  • How to Teach the Phrase to Young Kids
    Teaching the phrase to young kids could be a difficult task especially if they just started reading words. There are strategies in doing this to make it easier and more effective to the young kids.
  • How to Teach the Alphabet to the Young Kids
    Teaching the alphabet to young kids is just like teaching any other lesson. If you make it fun and interesting to the kids, the easier and faster they will learn the alphabet.

Ben has a net.

The net is wet.

The wet net is on the bed.

The story above is very short but you can do a lot of activities that will enhance learning in the kids. You can think of many ideas to make learning more productive for the kids.

More Activities for CVC Stories:

When the children are done reading the story; don’t stop there. Instead, give more activities for enhancement.

  • Question and answer

Ask Questions orally and let the children answer the questions orally too. Make the questions simple for the children. Simple questions are questions that the kids could easily understand and answer.

  • Drawing

You can also tell the children to draw a fat man and a fat cat. This activity will help the children connect words to pictures. When children draw the words, the more they can understand and absorb what you are teaching them.

  • Paper Work Exercises

Provide paper work exercises for the children to work on. This activity will train the kids to develop their memory skills, motor skills and recognition skills.

Remember that children cannot read the instructions so you do the reading for them.

All these activities will prepare the children for a bigger challenge in their learning phase.
