The color of fire ants can vary from red to brown to black depending on what part of the country they live in. These ants have a very narrow junction between their thorax and their abdomen. Fire Ants build a mound in sand or dirt and they will defend their colony when ever they are disturbed. We now know that fire ants entered the United States through the port of Mobile Alabama probably in old tires being returned to the United States to be recycled. The ants didn't arrive here in the United States until the 1930s but they have spread over a wide area that covers much of the American south and into the lower parts of the mid-west. it was once thought that the colder weather in the northern parts of the United States would keep them in the southern United States but they are now found as far north as Chicago Illinois. It is believed that they rode the trains north into the Chicago area.
Fire Ants are much more aggressive than their American cousins and they tend to build bigger and better mounds and colonies. They are constantly making new queens and trying to colonize new areas. Once they get into a new area they kill or run off their American cousins and take over the new area. Unfortunately fire ants love okra, potatoes, strawberries, citrus and corn. Fire Ants can destroy a crop in just a few days and at the same time with the huge new food supply they will build their colonies larger and larger and make more and more queens.
