How Television Can Brainwash You If You're Not Aware or Careful

The "Idiot Box" or "Boob Tube" originally the TV was called

Television as most know was originally referred to as the "boob tube" or idiot box. It has been known that it's a way to relax, and it's very helpful in that way.

EVERYTHING we watch, see, read, or ingest in any way WILL affect us, ESPECIALLY if it's done repeatedly. Humans minds and emotions can be affected by many things. We learn by repetition in school. Religion teaches by repetition as well. And so do political figures I would think.

Certain TV shows like comedies can seem to be a bit brainwashing as well. For example, I watch sometimes "That 70s show," "Home Improvement" and "According to Jim". These are funny and good shows in my opinion, but at times I notice content that I don't approve of, or may be a bad example in my mind. But much more so, political or religious comments are often made in tv shows, and they are often against my personal beliefs, and I think it's dangerous that they are sometimes projecting bad morals too. I sense that it's done in such a "sneaky" way that many don't notice at all! It is done very little at a time and over time. One little lie here and there and over time, you believe it!

Don't get me wrong, a lot of TV is good! It educational, inspirational and so on!!

What I'm saying is that if I or anyone is not careful, and they watch the same TV shows over and over, they may start to agree or believe what they hear. I just think it's important to be choosy what one watches and make sure it's not negative or unhealthy. I for one am more of a fan of documentaries, wood working shows, how it's made shows, travel shows, talent shows, or historical shows. I just can't get on board with watching crime shows because I hate violence and I don't want to look at or see people do awful things. This may be good entertainment for some, but not for me.

I may be old fashioned and I've always preferred shows that are really innocent and harmless like "The Brady Bunch" as a kid and movies like "The Sound of Music", basically good quality shows and movies that had character and good lessons to teach and good morals and such. However as I'm an adult now, I enjoy much more of a variety of shows and I'm aware that I may not agree with everything I see, and that's ok. It's actually good to see and experience new things to have an open mind. I think that learning how to think instead of what to think is most important. In other words, learning to be objective and use discernment. Young kids don't have this ability so parents should be careful what they let them watch in my opinion.

Today, there are more and more shows and movies that I find offensive and potentially harmful for certain minds to watch. It has been said that children under a certain age have minds not fully developed, and parents should be careful what they are allowing their children to watch. Particularly violent TV shows or movies (and especially video games) can actually cause some children to become violent in some cases.

It's due to a few factors. The age of the brain and the underdevelopment. The nature of the content that maybe no one should really watch? It seems that the more you see something over and over, you become desensitized to it. I agree with conservatives that it's not healthy to be so used to certain things that they don't bother you. I believe that violence should never be something people enjoy. I just don't think that's healthy unless it's relieving stress or boredom.

If I saw someone being attacked on the street, or if someone I knew was being hurt I would want to help if I could. I think people should always want to help others.

Commercials have a way of getting in your head. They repeat things over and over and they are played over and over. So if you want to ignore them you can mute them until your show comes back on. Heck, a lot are annoying so why not?

Many commercials I'm amazed are about prescription drugs and they give a huge list of horrible side effects that I wonder why anyone would consider taking these drugs unless absolutely necessary.

Other commercials are about things to buy and use words like "free shipping" "easy" "limited time offer" and many more to lure people into buying things they often don't need and it leads to debt for many.

There's one commercial I'm shocked about that has to do with making women's lips fuller and is about an injection that can cause blindness if done accidentally. I wonder who in their right mind would be that desperate to risk their eye sight just to have thicker lips.

As we know when we learn math in school, we repeat the times table and addition and subtraction tables until we memorize them. This is important and good information. But not all information is good for us. We need to be careful what we watch repetitively I think.

Repetition can affect us. Many times commercials affect people without them realizing it. And the news can affect people as well. I noticed when Covid 19 first happened back in March of 2020, the news was constantly talking about it daily, and a friend of mine got very anxious from listening to it that he felt like he was sick and felt he had trouble breathing. I asked him, "Are you watching the news a lot?" He said yes and that after he felt awful. I suggested to him to watch it less or not at all. Then a week later I asked how he was and he said much better!

I really personally like to think positive thoughts and it's impossible to do so if you are exposed or are willingly exposing yourself to negativity all the time!

In Conclusion

I am glad we had TV because it's a great way to spread positivity. I like watching many things, I'm just careful because it's important to me that I feel good and that I'm not being negatively or deceptively affected. It is definitely useful in many ways and if used in a good way can be very good!

I look forward to your feedback as well, as I've never written about this subject before! It just came to me today in my thoughts and I felt it was worthwhile to write about. My ex used to tell me he liked to mute all commercials and I don't blame him, that's brilliant!

Dr. Billy Kidd,

you are so right. over and over and certain people who cannot seem to "think for themselves" fall prey to this. SAD!

We need to think for ourselves and not accept everything we hear.

What about Trump?!! LOL!!!

schoolgirlforreal (author) on March 17, 2021:

gyanendra mocktan ,

thank you for that wise comment!

Yes, we need to have more silence, and read, and also spend time in nature. And maybe listen to nice music and meditate.

I agree, we need breaks from too much tv. esp the news and negative stuff.

schoolgirlforreal (author) on March 17, 2021:

Thanks! Yes, I am fond of nature on PBS, antiques roadshow, documentaries, wood working, how things are made. Sometimes new shows on Netflix or Starz like men in kilts, the white princess, and I like Schitt's creek.

Thank you for visiting here! Yes, unfortunately it does.

YES! TV and radio do the same things over and over until people believe them. Hence the big lie that Trump won the 2020 election.

This is an eye opening article for some.

Television has had hidden messages or lessons for years.

Just think back to the Wizard of Oz to name one.

Lessons galore.

I have noticed alot of commercials on prescriptions, especially cancer medications, but what's a person to do..when they need the medicine. Sometimes one must not worry about the side effects..always such a long list indeed.

But commercials have always geared towards getting us to make a purchase...therefore the repetitiveness comes into play.

Great article, I have not watched tv for years. I occasionally watch DVD's from my favorite shows years ago. Maybe I'm getting old but the programming on tv is absolutely awful.

Hi! Schoolgirlforreal, your shared a timely article on TV.

A sage had told before 1950s," Watch out! a day will come when man's every room will have cinema hall, what will be his behaviour/feeling." I meet every week the sage's servants in the Ashram where the sage spent his end part his life. TV programmes of any kind shape our life. Interestingly, these days, every pocket or purse carries a cinema hall. I've observed that people chat and chat. They have no time to listen. Be it in any race or nationality. Thank you

MEGHNA CHOUDHARY from Patna, Bihar on March 10, 2021:

Its a very good article. I have experienced most of these. Television really plays with human mind for profit.

It is a nice article, I enjoyed it, you pondered on a nice topic.

Yes of course TV shows are ruining thoughts of people specially kids even through cartoons so called entertainment for children. Actually most of them are leading to wrong ways and what should I say more short programs and videos on social media and especially YouTube where anyone can come and say whatever they want to... Which in my opinion is bad at times.. People speaking without knowledge... Spreading wrong things..

It's hurtful... When I see walls graffiti saying "Disney Ruined my Son". Spreading Bad ideas through humour is their main focus... You are enjoying it just because it makes you laugh but is a negative thought...bad for your mental health... The memes we used to see everyday are not only jokes but there is a hidden story about why it is created...

The film makers now don't really care about the PG ratings.. it's getting ignored and it's bad.. yes a few channels like discovery, national geographic channel etc. are healthy and good for kids to watch as at least they are informational..

The hype they create on news channels is not appreciated at all.. at least I don't... I have seen numerous cases who got heart attacks, panic attacks, anxiety disorders just because the news channels are producing negativity and people feel themselves uncomfortable even in their own homes

Thanks for sharing this informative article
