furtive-secret-to-success-exposed-by-the-toppers

The more you drench in practice, the less you have to suffer. Let’s unearth some secrets to success uttered by the toppers of MCAT and ECAT and other such exams.

Question that was put forward to them was:

What is the key to success which you think can help students, in future to pass such tests to get into medical and engineering universities? What are the key points which you adopted while your journey to success?

Here are the answers given by different students who burn their souls to achieve their goals, resisted all challenges put forth by people and future and are victorious at the end. They turned the fate in their favor by their tireless efforts and struggle to attain their aim.

Answer By Taimoor Iftikhar

"Students do what you do best, read learn, practice solve. Try to devise the practical aspect of whatever you learn. And books are not everything be good at other stuff too. That helps in university life."
(By Muhammad Taimoor Iftikhar. Scored 1058 in MCAT 2012)

Answer By Talha Haq Nawaz

"Go through the biology syllabus thoroughly. As bio MCQs are 90% book lines exactly. The word list of UHS should be on your finger tips. Have total grip on them and do prepare portion of grammar. You should be knowing all the rules of grammar. English portion makes a big difference in marks, so prepare this well. Physics and chemistry require ratta (cramming) but also a complete understanding of concepts. Physics, chemistry include conceptual questions as well which distinguish the average students from the bright!"
(By Talha Haq Nawaz. Scored 1035 in MCAT 2012)

Answer By Syed Hashim Shah

“These tests are far easier than one thinks. In tests like these, you are checked for your knowledge, concept, your proficiency in applying your knowledge to intricate problems, your sensibility to minute details (details of + or - etc), Pressure management (Of course there is huge burden of a test) and most importantly the Time Management.
I would like that you should study at least FSc Math thoroughly, give a glance to Physics and chemistry.
Do all the mistakes before test. Recognize your mistakes and figure out how and why you made that particular mistake and be sure to avoid them.
Also try to do reverse reasoning. Obtain question from the answer or in other words verify answers.
Try to figure out techniques for doing things fast and do it step wise. Keep a look at your watch and stay calm during test. I got two questions wrong in GIKI test just due to a minute sign error.
Also sometimes shapes of answers are distorted. Try to see the actual answer. For Example you obtain answer to some question as 1/2, but in the Choices there is no such option but one like log(sq. root(e)).
When I was in Matric and Fsc, I used to study the O level and A-level books to gain concepts. I think you guys have good concepts but poor practice of applying those concepts in knotty circumstances.
For practice you can take ECAT book and do brain buster exercises (Some of them are really hard to untie. Look at them, solve them, and Learn how to solve such question) Don't Go to any one, If you can't solve a problem, don’t ask from a teacher. Use internet, Use Yahoo answers, forums.
A forum that can be helpful for math is:

  • The Math Forum - Ask Dr. Math
The Internet's premier ask-an-expert math help service. Ask Dr. Math a question using the Dr. Math Web form, or browse the extensive archive of previous questions and answers.

You will find a lot of mathematical stuff on this site and you can post your questions here too! and get answers usually within 24 hrs)
some problems in ECAT math sections are very long related to matrices , you may skip them, but do try them.
And one thing more, Try to take as many as tests you can! This will give you experience of time management.
Always try to search for the trick behind the question. Try to find out how some problem can be done in a shortest way. Draw diagrams, figures. And get a good sleep on the test night (That’s the most important thing.")
See what you need to remember and what you can quickly infer from the things you can remember, what facts you can quickly obtain from the facts you remember, go for reasoning. And plus dedication and hard work are most important..
Mnemonics for remembering formulas are also good. E.g. memorizing derivatives of inverse trigonometric functions. Let arc sec u be considered. Derivative of secx is secx*tanx=secx*sqrt(secx^2 -1) and take its reciprocal and replace secx by 'u' and you get the same form as arc sec u. Therefore I don’t memorize inverse function derivatives”.
(BySyed Hashim Shah Hashmi. Merit Positions: 1st in Nust, 2nd in GIKI and 13th in PIEAS)

These are some books of SAT which can be helpful for the practice .
If you are going to appear in NET , do use SAT English for the preparation. Other books will help you in building the concepts.

Answer by Hammad Dar

"The most important thing in my view for the preparation of entrance test is your determination, no matter how good or worse you are in studies, if you are determined enough, no one can stop you from getting your aim. Prepare hard for the tests (at least 5 hours daily), practice a lot of mcq's, practice is the key to success in entrance tests, do not miss even a single topic from any book, give tests of different universities to see where you stand and how well is your preparation, if you follow this, no matter where you stand now, you will get to your desired destination. May Allah help you in getting you aim "

Answer by Abdullah Rafique

The most important thing for the students when they encounter entry tests is their concept. Concept of all the major chapters of physics, chemistry and mathematics whereas some extra knowledge to evaluate the problems. Furthermore, only knowledge doesn't help a student to get a respectable merit position in entry test but also different tactics that one does not think or practice for in the preparation of entry tests i.e. the management of time (the most important), focusing on the easy questions first and not wasting time on difficult ones in the beginning etc.
And your preparation should be solely based on F.Sc books. If you are good at all the concepts, I bet you'll surely get a high merit number, plus you can consider reference books or practice MCQs from books like ECAT or KIPS etc. If you'll follow these things, you'd get admission wherever you want.
(By Abdullah Rafique. Merit Positions. 2nd in Nust , 3rd in PIEAS)

Hope that the answers may satisfy you to the fullest. Four leading keys to success in every preparation of such exams are

  • A full-fledged timetable and schedule for you preparation.

  • Don’t cram your head with loads of stuff at a moment. Make stories, mnemonics, tricky sentences and ways like that for easier learning. Revise and revise.

  • Try to maximize your abilities by giving the tests and practicing more and more. Focus on every single mistake which you make. Drench yourself in concepts. Don’t take tension. Be calm; ask for help from Allah Mighty. Offer your prayers because that give you internal strength. Practice, practice and practice makes you perfect.

  • As far as subjects are concerned give more time to bio/math according to your field. And focus on English. Usually the portion of English makes a huge difference in marks.Never consider numericals of secondary importance.

Good luck!
