The Difference Between the Triceratops and Avaceratops (public domain worldwide) (public domain worldwide)

The Triceratops means 'three-horned face' and this dinosaur was a herbivore. It measured up to 9 meters long and was 3 meters high, and probably weighed over 9 tons. It lived around 70 to 66 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period in North America, especially in Montana, Wyoming, Saskatchewan and also in Alberta in Canada.

The Triceratops was a horned dinosaur and belonged to the Ceratopsidae family. It was as long as two medium sized cars and weighed as much as five rhinoceroses which is equivalent to 9 tons. It was a large and powerful dinosaur. It had one small horn on its nose and one above each eye, which were up to 1 meters long. These horns were probably used as weapons. The Triceratops walked on all for legs, and its front legs were very strong because they had to support the weight of its extremely weighty head.

Around the dinosaurs neck was a huge bony frill which protected its shoulders, and could take and handle shattering blows from other fierce dinosaurs. It is still uncertain what color the dinosaurs were, but some experts think that the Triceratops neck frill was brightly colored. Experts also reckon that the Triceratops was so well armed, that it did not need to be green or brown color for camouflage, but it did have a brightly colored frill to attract the opposite sex.

2 T-rex vs Triceratops

Just similar to the Avacerotops dinosaur, the Triceratops nipped off shoots and leaves with its bony parrot-like beak. It chomped them up with rows of teeth at the rear of its mouth. New teeth grew as the old teeth were wearing down in their place. On its huge head, it had three horns, one above each eye another on the end of its nose as already mentioned. These horns were believed to be used for self-defense, and such dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus rex can encounter difficulties in attacking the Triceratops. It also may have used the horns to battle other male Triceratops for the females before mating.

The males probably fought each other to become the master of the herd and to attract females. They did not use their horns to wound each other physically. Instead, two males pushed and butted each other with their enormous heads, plus locking the horns in a bruising battle to prove which was the toughest and to gain dominance. The Triceratop's neck frill would protect its shoulders and body from a head-on attack by another male. Experts have fond damaged neck frills, and which show that these fights between the males were brutal enough to cause certain injuries.

Avaceratops (public domain worldwide) (public domain worldwide)

Dinosaurs such as the Tyrannosaurus rex would have to think twice about attacking the Triceratops, because it could cause major wounds by stabbing the predator with its sharp horns. Triceratops was well protected against predators who attack it. Its bony neck frill was a good defense against sharp teeth and claws and it possessed tough skin. The Triceratops cold charge at its enemies by running at a top speed of 35 kilometers an hour. A charge like this would have scared off several meat-eating dinosaurs. At present a charging rhino is very dangerous, we can imagine what a charge from a giant Triceratops would be like.

Avaceratops means 'Ava's horned face' and this dinosaur is 2.5 to 4 meters long and 1 to 1.3 meters high. It is a herbivore (plant-eater) which ate low-growing plants and belonged to the class Ceratopsidae. It lived between 100 - 66 million years ago in the late Cretaceous period in North America, especially in the western part of the United States of America. The Avaceratops was as long as a car and was sturdily built just like an army tank and must have weighed around 400 pounds. The dinosaur had a bony frill similar to a collar, around its neck, and a short horn on its nose. The horn was known to be used for protection against large carnivorous dinosaurs. As being a plant-eater, it chopped off the stems with its unusual mouth, which was similar to a parrot's beak. The dinosaur then sliced up the woody sections of the plants with rows of sharp teeth at the rear of its jaws.

The Avaceratops had four strong legs and would have been possible for it run very fast and escape from predators. As it ran, it may have balanced its body with its hefty tail which it held off the ground.

The Avaceratops was discovered in 1981 at the Judith River Formation in Montana, US. It was discovered by Eddie Cole and was named until 1988 by Peter Dodson. The name Ava was the name of Eddie's wife, which led the idea of the name Avaceratops. The fossil skeleton is now on display at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, US. Scientists think that these creatures may have inhabited in large herds and roaming the North American Plains.

T-Rex is very scarey looking.. although I like to read about dinosaurs I am glad they do not live today..
