Vitamins are a group of substances that are needed for proper cell function, growth, and development. Vitamins and minerals are considered important nutrients since they help the body perform hundreds of functions. There's a fine line between having enough of these nutrients (which is good) and getting too much of them (which is bad) (which can end up harming you). The easiest way to get adequate quantities of the vitamins and minerals you need is to eat a balanced diet.

When Europeans first began taking long sea voyages, many of the sailors developed a strange disease called scurvy, which appeared to affect the body's larger joints. It was a rare form of arthritis that was often associated with joint bleeding.The gums will be affected as well, causing the teeth to loosen and fall out. Patients reported feeling weak, tired, and irritable, as well as muscle pain and aching. However, as soon as the sailors reach land and begin to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, the strange disease disappears.


What was this scurvy-preventive secret key substance in fruits and vegetables? Nobody knew for sure. However, the sailors were given a plentiful supply of limes and lemons by a few wise doctors in the British navy.The limes and lemons provided a sufficient supply of vitamin C. As a result, scurvy, which we now know is caused by a lack of vitamin C, was the first deficiency disease to be identified and successfully treated.


Another strange disease was prevalent in the nineteenth century. The disease was given the name beriberi, which is still used by doctors today. This strange disease was the basis for the true discovery of vitamins.While working in Indonesia, a Dutch scientist named Eijkman noticed that the disease was more prevalent in areas where people were crowded together. He believed that the poorer people's diet was insufficient.


As soon as these remarkable results were found, doctors all over the world were captivated. This gave birth to a whole new concept of disease management. Doctors quickly began to discover other vitamins and their roles in the body after someone invented the term "vitamin."


Vitamin is not a meal, despite the fact that it is commonly found in our food. It isn't even a dietary supplement. Vitamins do not provide energy or repair damaged tissues. Even so, a man can't live without vitamins. While several vitamins are only needed in small quantities, yet vitamins play an important role in the majority of chemical reactions in the body. Many of these cellular reactions are carried out by enzymes, with each type of enzyme being responsible for carrying out a specific chemical reaction within the body. Enzymes are made up of a complex combination of vitamins and minerals that are joined together in a highly complex way. If only one vitamin is deficient, an enzyme cannot be produced, and the body's major functions are affected.


Where do vitamins come from?They are produced in plants and are found in all fresh foods. Excessive cooking, on the other hand, can kill some vitamins, especially vitamin C. They may also be destroyed by drying or exposure to the sun and wind. Some vitamins are not so easily damaged. They can endure cooking and boiling without being changed. But many of these vitamins are water-soluble and are thrown away while the cooking water is drained off.Vitamins function in a variety of ways, and their responses inside the body are often related to one another. The majority of vitamins do not form on their own. They're usually found in pairs or small groups.


The general characteristics of the vitamins are given below:

  • Vitamins can do a lot of work in a short amount of time. As a result, the daily requirement is typically very limited. The daily vitamin requirement for any person is not a defined amount.It varies based on the speed of metabolism. The vitamin requirement is high in people who do heavy muscular work, in pregnancy, lactation, and in developing children. A man who works regular hours will usually get enough vitamins from his well-balanced mixed diet.
  • Vitamins can be widely distributed in nature, both in the animal and vegetable realms. Plants are responsible for the production of all vitamins. Almost every popular food item contains a combination of vitamins.
  • Vitamins can be stored to some extent in the body; for example, fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and subcutaneous tissue, vitamin C is stored in the adrenal cortex, and so on.
  • The body synthesizes a variety of vitamins. Microorganisms in the intestine produce certain members of the vitamin B complex family.
  • Despite the fact that vitamins are important for life, they are not required for all animal species. The physiological requirement is associated with the production of a specific vitamin in the organism.
  • Vitamins are not damaged during digestion and are thus consumed in their natural state. As a result, all vitamins are effective when taken orally.
  • A number of vitamins are soluble in water and others are fat-soluble.
  • The majority of vitamins have been synthesized in an unnatural way.


Vitamins are classified into two categories:

  1. Fat-soluble vitamins, which includes vitamins A, D, E and K.
  2. Water soluble vitamins which includes vitamins of the B-group and vitamin C

Now, if we were all perfectly balanced and managed to eat the right foods, we would almost definitely be able to stay strong and active at all times. But most of us aren't in this position. We all have some flaws at birth, and no one is in perfect health. As a result, we must ensure that our diet includes all of the nutrients necessary for good health, including minerals and vitamins.
