Some interesting facts about eggs
1 When egg white looks cloudy it usually indicates freshness
2 The little blood droplets sometimes found in eggs is actually ruptured vessels in the yolk
3 Freshly laid eggs normally has a temperature of 105 degree Fahrenheit
4 It takes twenty five hours for ovulation to complete before a chicken can lay an egg
5 The entire cycle from ovulation to next egg is about twenty eight hours
6 Eggshell structure is made out of calcium carbonate
7 The calcium carbonate composition of the shell is identical to that found in antacid medicine
8 The albumen is the egg whites protein
9 Egg consists of magnesium, sodium , sulfur and other cool stuff
10 Did you know that over 74 billion eggs are produced in the United States of America?
Sorry couldn’t resist the short title since it put a smile on my face; I had no choice but to go with the three letter word. Such a simple name for nature’s most amazing gift, without the egg there might be no living thing on this planet except maybe a couple of microbes, bacteria, fungi and amoeba.
Almost every important creature on the planet starts its incredible journey form the solitary egg, the egg might have different genetic markers and characteristics but basically most life forms on earth start as eggs. For instance human being start their journey when the female egg gets fertilized by a speedy bugger and the fertilized egg journeys through the fallopian tube then develops in the womb by aid of the placenta which is the feeding highway to the fetus then a lovely baby.
Apart from mammals that go through internal fertilization development and growth of the baby within the womb, other creatures after mating and fertilization lay the eggs which are later incubated before their young emerge.
Most eggs that are laid either have soft exterior or a hard shell exterior but the general structure remains the same, and for the egg to hatch some level of warmth is needed during the developmental stages.
Fish eggs: Fish also have very tiny eggs which develop into microscopic fry, most fish have the ability to lay several thousands eggs in a single batch, and this is a useful adaptation considering the number of predators that feast on the eggs and the newly developed fingerlings.
Mackerel fish despite their teeming number are the most hunted fish in the sea they run close together for protection making them a target for several predators such as dolphins, whales, sharks and birds that have a feeding frenzy.
Fish usually find nice little underwater caves, crevasses or holes to release their eggs while the dominant male fertilizes them, some fish have an interesting adaptation that allows them carry their eggs within themselves until they hatch, and a few even carry the eggs in their mouths till they hatch, URH!
The loggerhead turtle laying eggs on a beach
Reptile eggs: reptiles also lay eggs too, reptiles such as the fearsome crocodile, lizards and even snakes all have different kinds of eggs, and the crocodile despite their tough image and reputation as killing machines are actually very gentle parents. The female lays the eggs on the beach close to the river in a hole she makes, when the fertilized eggs hatches she comes back to dig them up and gently carries the little monsters in her mouth placing them between the tongue and the pallet to get them acquainted with the water.
Crocodiles are basically either salt water or fresh water specialists but Nile crocodiles are predominantly found in the fresh can also adapt to saline environments. The salt water verities are much larger than their fresh water look alike but are less meticulous when it comes to nesting their eggs.
The salt water crocodiles look for any available vegetation and bury their eggs under, while the Nile ones dig holes about 20m deep and both species lay between thirty five (35) to eighty five (85) eggs in a batch. The females lay their thin shelled eggs about two months after courtship and both parents fiercely guard their eggs until the little ones start calling for the mother.
Snakes on the other hand burying their bundle of joy then leave the eggs to hatch and the small cretins to fend for themselves. If one mistakenly stumbles upon the mother it is not out of place to become a delicious meal.
Lizard’s eggs: lizards are rather boring, after mating the female digs a hole lays the eggs, covers the stash and presto little lizards after a while, small lizards immediately start fending for themselves. They are very capable younglings and hunt small insects, worms, bugs and raid bird nests.
Hard shelled eggs
Amphibian eggs: Amphibians like the frog and the toad are not left out in this egg fest, their eggs are usually laid in clusters inside shallow pools of water, the fertilized eggs later hatch into tadpole who are aquatic by nature even haven gills and are also veracious predators to microscopic crustaceans and insects.
The turtle eggs: the turtle only comes to shore once in its lifetime that is to lay eggs, they are particular about the location and usually choose remote beach lands especially their birth place. The turtle laboriously digs a hole and lays its fertilized eggs this is done mostly at night, then it covers the hole and its job is done.
When they hatch the little copies have to make their way to the ocean which might be as far as fifty meters, they face a lot of obstacles and hungry birds on their way to the sea. Little turtles are very vulnerable and defenseless; they swim beautifully but struggle on land making them easy targets for hungry predators.

Humming bird eggs
The humming bird eggs: the humming bird might be a very small bird but it has its place in the scheme of things because it is the birth place of a small but amazing bird. The bird despite its size has incredible agility in the air and feed predominantly on nectar.

Yup got around finally to more familiar territory, everyone knows how bird’s eggs look like but the only difference in certain species of birds is the size, shape and color. Most bird eggs are oblong shaped and the color has nothing to do with the kind of concentrate but the breed of the hen and the lobe color.
Unlike most eggs I have mentioned bird eggs are not only a mass of protein like the others but they also have a hard shell, the outer shell encases the egg white and the yellow core which is the yolk. The yolk is actually the developing bird which eats the store of egg white as it develops. Usually eggs have a little pocket of air inside that aids the chick just before it hatches.
Chicken egg: the chicken egg is the most common egg known to man, the egg is small oval shaped, has a thin hard shell and a fertilized yolk which becomes a chick. Eggs have about one hundred and eighty six millimeters( 186) milligrams of cholesterol, one point five grams(1.5 g)rams of saturated fat and 6 grams of protein per egg.
Chickens are widely farmed for their meat and eggs and special agric chicken feed called layers mash. The specially formulated food turns the chickens into egg laying machines capable of laying an egg a day or at best one egg every other day. Free range chickens in a space of two weeks can lay about ten fertilized eggs which they incubate by seating on them to provide warmth.
Fertilized chicken eggs can also be hatched using specialized equipment which are the incubators and the temperature in the machine is maintained at about one hundred degrees Fahrenheit (100f). The eggs take about twenty one days before they hatch into tiny chicks.
Other juicy facts about chicken eggs is that the eggs are a good source of choline a B vitamin that protects the heart and aid pregnant women’s fetal brain development, in a nutshell chicken eggs make our own eggs smarter, cool.
An ostrich egg beside an elephant birds egg
Ostrich eggs: the reason I mention ostrich eggs is because they lay the largest egg around today that doesn’t mean there haven’t been bigger once in the past associated to certain dinosaurs or prehistoric creatures. The ostrich eggs is a massive storehouse of protein and has incredible number of calories of about two thousand calories(2000 calories), the egg also has the honor of having the largest single cell yolk.
Other interesting facts are the egg dynamo weighs fourteen kilograms(14kg), it is fifteen centimeters long(15cm) and thirteen centimeters wide(13cm), during the mating season that can run from march to end first week of September the huge bird lays an egg every two days managing between eight and twelve eggs in all.
Ostriches cooperate when it comes to nesting that might explain why they have managed to escaped extinction, other female ostriches lay their eggs in the same place and building a collective nest that contains well over sixty five eggs (65eggs). It takes between thirty three days to forty five days before the eggs hatch and guard duty involves both the male and the female ostrich.
The female because of her brownish plumage that blends well during the day has day watch, while the male takes care of night duty with his thicker and darker feathers. To get a feel of the ostrich eggs imagine twenty four chicken eggs to one ostrich egg.
Humming birds have one of the smallest eggs
Eggs provide lots of much needed protein we need for our daily activities, we boil them, fry them, blend and use it in many dishes and it also has a place in some cultural festivities. It is an amazing adaptation that has encouraged life as we know it, it might look different but without the egg mammals, reptiles and birds would not populate the earth making the place a weird looking planet.
femi (author) from Nigeria on July 25, 2014:
I agree diet has nothing to do with egg color, chicken feed affects the flavor while the egg shell is determined by the ear-lobe color and breed.
Duncan on July 21, 2014:
Diet has little to do with chicken egg color... Different species of chicken lay different color eggs based on the color of their earlobes... White leghorns lay white, Reds lay brown and ameruacana's lay blue/green...and others depend on their earlobe color... If what you said was true then all my chickens would lay the same color egg, and they definitely do not!
someonewhoknows from south and west of canada, north of ohio on April 22, 2014:
So, the major difference between mammals & reptiles or birds is that mammals have longer gestation cycles and the sack that mammals are in during gestation aren't covered by a shell and stay within the mothers body until the sack breaks and birth begins.
