MARS TRANSPORTATION PROGRAMME

SpaceX aims to make Mars a permanent home for humans. Mars transportation infrastructure has been proposed by SpaceX and its CEO. The goal is to make colonization of Mars possible. Elon Musk declared in a meeting in 2011 that he wanted to send humans on Mars in about 10 to 20 years. Later in 2012, Elon Musk stated that he imagined a proper human settlement on Mars with thousands of individuals. As declared by SpaceX Mars transportation programme, the first human will land on Mars in 2024.

The Mars mission will comprise of reusable launch vehicles, human rated spacecraft, on orbit propellant tankers and local production of the rocket fuel on Mars. However, the key and main space vehicle for this infrastructure is the SpaceX Starship which is a fully reusable space vehicle. SpaceX Starship will first reach the Earths orbits. From the earth’s orbits starship will head towards the Moon and from their it will finally land on its destination, Mars.

WHY LEAVE EARTH?

Mono planetary residency is not going to be sufficient in future. As the earth is on its way to sixth great mass extinction. The colonization, over population and industrial development has left us earth with worst conditions. It damages the flora and fauna, whole ecosystem, and over all the survival will be difficult on earth in the future. However, in the case of any Nuclear wars, or third world war in the forthcoming, earth will be left with zero chances of survival. As the nuclear tensions are rising, Elon Musk says that Mars is far enough that it would not be affected by any nuclear explosions.

So, keeping all these conditions in mind. The humans are planning to colonize Mars for the survival of human race before earths conditions become even more worst.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has a broader vision, Musk is even thinking about long term Mars settlement. As compared to earth, Mars has much more difficult environment and atmosphere. Keeping that in check, Mining and Refining will be done accordingly in the environment with no trees, oxygen, or nitrogen and no oil. SPACEX BFR'S

Before the first astronaut ever step foot on the surface of Mars. They will need to have the essentials like water and power all set up before they get there. SpaceX plans to achieve this mission of availability of water and power on Mars by 2022, by sending two BFR’s on un crewed missions carrying important equipment's such as a large array of solar panels and a mining system. This mining system will be the basis of SpaceX’s automated propellant plant, which they plan to expand with every new mission to Mars. This propellant plant will process the large supplies of CO2 and water found on mars by using the Sabatier process to make oxygen and methane, which will be then liquified and used as a fuel to return the astronauts back to earth. If this goes on successfully then SpaceX will send their next mission consisting of the first passengers.

THE MARTIAN BASE

This mission will consist of 2 cargo ships and 2 crewed ships carrying around 6 to 8 astronaut each. the astronauts could be staying on mars anywhere between a few months or a couple of years while they continue to set up a propellant plant. One of the most important things the astronauts have to do when they arrive is to set up a base. The Martian base should have a similar design to the international space station. It should have compact pressurized modules that can allow room for expansion. Some suggest that the Martian base should be built underground where it will be safe from the harsh environment. That way the astronauts will be protected from the intense radiations and extreme Martian weather.

WHAT WILL THEY EAT?

The first astronauts will take 2 year’s supply of vacuum sealed light and compact food packets. They will grow food on Mars but they will not rely entirely on the food grown on Mars. They will bring a greenhouse to experiment with growing food and they might supplement their food with newly grown Martian food.
