Abraham is the common patriarch of the Abrahamic religions, including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Despite this commonality, the three religions have been at daggers drawn for centuries. The creation of the state of Israel through a UN mandate in 1948 was not palatable to the Arabs who were mostly Sunni. The Arabs were incensed at the displacement of their brethren in the state of Palestine which had been their home for centuries. They vowed to destroy the state of Israel. This led to 4 wars between the Arabs and Israel and in all the four wars the Arabs were decisively defeated. Having been decisively defeated the Arab states began to support terrorist activities of the Palestinian Arabs. Terror organizations like Hamas came to the fore and indulged in all sorts of terrorist activities against the state of Israel. Despite carrying on terrorist activities against Israel for four decades the Palestinian Arabs were nowhere close to their objective and a rethink among some of the frontline states bordering Israel had started. Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994 established diplomatic relations with Israel but the other Arab states continued their hostility.
In the 21st-century the geopolitical scenario in the Middle East changed dramatically. The Arab states who were mostly Sunni were faced by an existentialist threat from Iran which is basically a Shia state. Iran is a rising power and may very well go nuclear despite all the sanctions by the United States.
This is where Donald Trump appeared on the scene. He commissioned his son-in-law Jared Kushner to negotiate a peace deal between the Arabs and Israel. The United States acted as a big brother in the deal. The Arabs realized the futility of continued hostility towards Israel and deft diplomacy convinced them to make peace with the Jewish state. This is the basis of the Abraham accord which has led to 2 important Sunni Arab states namely the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to conclude a peace deal with Israel.
The Abraham accord
Unknown to the world the US President Donald Trump and his son-in-law Jared Kushner were working behind the scenes to conclude a peace deal between the Arabs and Israel. It is to the credit of Donald Trump that he was able to convince the hardline Sunni Arabs to forget about hostility towards Israel.
The UAE has come a long way from 1971 when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan the first president of UAE referred to Israel as "the enemy". With the threat of Shia Iran increasing by the day cooperation between the UAE and Israel increased. The head of Mossad Yossi Cohen was seen traveling frequently to UAE. Backdoor negotiations continued under the aegis of the United States. There is no doubt that Donald Trump was behind this entire scenario.
On 13 August 2020, the UAE and Israel signed the US-brokered agreement implying that the three parties represented the three Abrahamian religions. Relations between the UAE and Israel have been normalized but what has not been stated is that there will be security cooperation also against common enemies probably referring to Iran.
Within a few days, the kingdom of Bahrain has also followed suit. The monolith front of the Arabs against Israel has been broken. The crucial player in the region is Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have so far not recognized Israel but in the weeks to come there is every chance that the Saudis will follow the UAE because the UAE and Bahrain could not have carried out the steps without the approval of the king of Saudi Arabia
This peace deal is definitely the event of the 21st century and hostility of almost a century has been set aside. For this agreement, the credit has to go to the US president who had all along stated that he had a deal in his hands.
The peace deal has not been welcomed by everybody. Iran and Turkey have denounced it and the Palestinian Arabs have said that they are betrayed. Turkey has forgotten that it has recognized Israel decades back and has a lucrative trade with it. Since it is aspiring for the leadership of the Muslim world it has chosen to denounce the peace accord. Iran also is in the same boat and would like to lead the Muslim world but it suffers a handicap as it is a Shia state and the majority of the Muslims are Sunni. However, its propensity to create trouble and terror in the region is quite a bit and that is a matter of concern to the Arab states.
Turkey also will not be able to exert itself as a leader of the Muslims because for a long period the Arabs were under the rule of the Ottoman Empire and they have sad memories of Ottoman rule.
Hopefully, in time to come, the Palestinian Arabs will reconcile to the state of Israel and accept an independent governing entity.
Donald Trump can certainly pat himself on the back and the American people must feel proud of him for having engineered this deal. There is a distinct possibility that he could well be awarded the Nobel peace prize for this effort.
Donald Trump is facing reelection this November and it's a moot point whether this deal which he has worked out will have any effect on the American electorate.

Any time we can have more peace in the world, I would say that is a win. Donald Trump has received very little praise in America. I think you have written an excellent article about this historc even, MG.

Excellent article. Very informative and indeed the peace deal is historic in nature. No other president pushed the agreement like this, only Trump managed to do that. His efforts to create pacification in middle east should be appreciated.
I absolutely enjoyed reading your article. Great content. Keep writing.
