Stories Of Mermaids Can Be Traced Back 4000 Years
Stories of mermaids can be traced back 4000 plus years. The mermaid is a legendary aquatic ocean creature that has the upper body of a human being and the lower body of a fish.
The first stories of the Mermaids can be traced back to ancient Assyria where it is said that the Goddess Atargatis transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame because she accidentally killed her human lover.
Mermaids are most often associated with tragic events like drownings, ship wrecks, hurricanes, and people lost at sea. There are stories of mermaids that helped people and mermaids that attacked people or tried to pull them down to the ocean depths.
Over the years sailors at sea have often mistaken sea life like manatees, sea cows, and oar fish for mermaids. Its interesting to note that the diary writings of Christopher Columbus tell of seeing mermaid creatures that had long blond hair, beautiful full breasts and the tails or lower bodies of fish.
He also told of seeing male mermaid creatures that carried small three point spears. Columbus and his men told that the creatures they saw were creatures with the upper bodies of humans and the lower bodies of fish. Other explorers over the years have told of seeing similar creatures in the south Atlantic Ocean area and in and around the Caribbean Sea.
Christopher Columbus And His Men Saw Real Live Mermaids
Legend says that a mermaid is an aquatic sea creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a fish. It is recorded in the log books of Christopher Columbus that he and his men witnessed mermaids on their first voyages to the New World and from the description written in the log book there is no way that Columbus or his men were mistaking a sea cow or manatee for a real mermaid.
Columbus said in his description that the creature he saw had a beautiful upper body like a young maiden with long golden hair that fell down her back and firm young breasts that would make a man cry out with desire. He said she had a long tail like a fish and he told of hearing several of the mermaid creatures talking in an unknown language to one another. He went on to write that he saw at least two male mermaid creatures armed with small three prong spears. I don't know about you but I've never seen a sea cow or a manatee armed with a trident like spear.
I don't think Columbus was looking at manatees or sea cows and mistaking them for real mermaids. I really think he saw real mermaid creatures.
It really makes me wonder if Columbus and his men saw real mermaid creatures. Have they been there all along and people just haven't seen them.

Is That A Real Mermaid In The Photo?
National Ocean Service Says There Is No Evidence Of Real Mermaids
Officially NOAA says there is not now nor has there ever been any evidence of a real mermaid but they go on to say that over 80 percent of the world's oceans remain unexplored.
Un officially NOAA says there is the possibility that a mermaid or mermaid creature could exist. Anything they say could be hiding at the bottom of the ocean.

Did This Spear Once Belong To A Mermaid?
Are Mermaids Using Spears To Hunt Fish?
Fishermen all over the world have found strange spears like the one in the above photo sticking in fish that they have caught. Did this spear once belong to a real live mermaid that was using it to hunt fish under the ocean.
And believe it or not but fishermen all over the world have found spears and spear points in fish they have caught going back hundreds of years. What is using spears to hunt fish under the water.
Is The U.S. Government Covering Up The Evidence Of Mermaids?
Many people around the world believe that the U.S. Government has actually killed mermaids during sonar research and that they have covered this up. Some people have even claimed they saw a mermaids body on a beach in California and that people from the U.S. Navy seized their cameras arrested them and then released them about 10 miles down the beach. When they went back to the beach the mermaids body was gone and the sand had been raked clean of even footprints.
We do know for a fact that whales and dolphins have beached themselves around the world because of U.S. Navy sonar experiments. And we know that the U.S. Government is famous for hiding or covering up everything from sonar experiments to tests on honey bees.
So its not that far fetched that they would cover up the existence of real live mermaids. What do you think about this. Do you think the U.S. Government would cover up the existence of mermaids? Why not post what you think in the comments below.

Is This The Photo Of A Real Mermaid Skeleton?
PT Barnum's Fiji Mermaid
Is That A Photo Of A Mermaids Skeleton?
In the photo above is supposed to be a skeleton of a real mermaid. If that is a real picture of a real skeleton then mermaids are indeed real living breathing creatures.
If you look at the skeleton carefully I don't think it is fake . Maybe just maybe it really is a real skeleton of a real mermaid. What do you think? Why not post what you think in the comments section below.
I think the skeleton looks much more realistic than the Fiji Mermaid which we now know was indeed a fake.
P.T. Barnum had a taxidermist to create and make the Fiji Mermaid and at the time that Barnum started displaying the Fiji Mermaid people believed that it was a real creature. It was not until many years later that people learned that the Fiji Mermaid was created from a fish and a monkey sewn together. The above skeleton in the photo could be a fake as well but it doesn't look to be a fake. Only time will tell.
Some people would have to have a mermaid swim up to them and say here I am before they would believe that mermaids were real.
Mermaid Sighted Near Israel Town Of Kiryat Yam.
In August of 2009 dozens of people told of seeing a mermaid leap out of the water and do tricks up in the air. This mermaid incident was said to have happened off of the Israel coastal town of Kiryat Yam. The town of Kiryat Yam offered one million dollars cash to anyone that could prove that the mermaid was real.
Many people back in August of 2009 said that the mermaid was very real and that it would jump up out of the water and do tricks up in the air. Local people in the area said that people were seeing something and it for sure wasn't a fish or a seal.

There are so many undiscovered species and it is food for thought. Personally if they actually exist I seriously doubt they would be beautiful looking women on top and fishy from the waist down. They would have to live deep in the water where it is dark. Wouldn't the eyes be larger to allow more light? The long pretty hair applied in obviously faked photos would serve no purpose in oceanic life. To communicate with others of their ilk or other marine life wouldn't there be evidence of an echolocator? I sincerely doubt they would be warm blooded mammals to survive the oceanic temperatures. They should have evolved into more fish than human I would think. Arms with webbed fingers is believable as is a form of higher thinking. How they would reproduce is beyond me however. Since there have been reported sightings ever since man has sailed the seas it is obvious that there has to be something to it. If there truly are mermaids and merman I sincerely hope they continue to be very elusive as their survival would depend upon it. Humans have a way of trapping, hunting and exploiting species into extinction.

I do truely belive that mermaids are real, because how would someone just come up with it out of the blue??? (No pun intended) Also, this article has alot of really good info brings up the chance of mermaids being real by about 30%… so thanks for this article!!!!!!

Another Enthralling hub crazyhorsesghost. The mermaid surprised on the rocks that dives into the water looks real though it is at some distance, and the skeleton also doesn't look fake. The rest probably are, but interesting to see all the same. I think anything portraying a mermaid with a beautiful woman's upper body is probably going too far though, and they definitely wouldn't be wearing a bikini top as in one of the videos. I think I would need to see one for myself before I believed it, but I'm open for that. Well done.

I think you may be right about how the mermaids would look. Aviannovice I really appreciate your comment. Thank you.
Deb Hirt from Stillwater, OK on March 25, 2014:
Sure makes people think, doesn't it, Mr. B? Our oceans hide a lot of things, and there are possibilities that we could well have many unexplained things there. However, I don't think that mermaids would look as god as what is portrayed. I think they would look more like sea creatures than humans.
Thomas Byers (author) from East Coast , United States on March 12, 2014:
Thanks John I really appreciate it. Your a great friend and I really appreciate your kind words. You've always been a great friend and I appreciate you.

Again Thomas a great piece of writing. You have created a piece here that gives a wide variety of evidence of mermaids. I'm really not sure what to believe about the mermaid skeleton but you did a great job again. Keep up the wonderful work.

I found the mermaid skeleton very interesting. Are you the same Thomas Byers that wrote for the New York voice in the 1980s. I know if that's you I really enjoyed what you wrote for them.
