Psychology is one of the most interesting topics of science. With the help of it's achievements we can research the hidden corners of our souls. With the indepth look at oneself and how we react and act with our surroundings, we discover something new about our personality, it's traits and our character in general.
There are basically four major types of personalities which include : Sanguine, Melancholic, Choleric and Phlegmatic. Our character is basically a mix of these four personalities, which then consitutes to our behaviour and way of thinking.
It may be a bit difficult to explain but let's look at an example: An aggressive teenager who bullies and gangs up on his fellow students may be said to have a Choleric personality while after taking a deeper look, he may also be phlegmatic in nature.
Among the first to study Personality traits, was Alfred Adler, born in the suburbs of Vienna on February 7, 1870. He noted that four types could be distinguished based on the different levels of energy they involved.
Below I will list some character traits of each individual personality accompanied with a wonderful video presentation from Mervyn Byrd to better relate and explain it to you.
The first is the ruling type. They are, from childhood on, characterized by a tendency to be rather aggressive and dominant over others. Their energy -- the strength of their striving after personal power -- is so great that they tend to push over anything or anybody who gets in their way. The most energetic of them are bullies and sadists; somewhat less energetic ones hurt others by hurting themselves, and include alcoholics, drug addicts, and suicides.
According to Ancient Greeks if you had too much yellow bile, you would be choleric (hot and dry) and angry all the time. The choleric is, roughly, the ruling type.
They can dominate people of other temperaments, especially phlegmatic types. Many great charismatic military and political figures were cholerics. They like to be leaders and in charge of everything.
Here is a short list of their common traits: Prone to anger, impatience, irritability; short temper. Bold, courageous, audacious; confrontive, contentious. Dramatic, bombastic manner; high powered personality.
The rugged individualist and pioneer; thrives on challenge. The fearless leader. Seeks exhilaration, intense experiences. Driven, "Type A" personality. Prone to extremism, fanaticism.
They are prone to the following illnesses:
- Fevers, infections, inflammation. Hives, rashes, urticaria. Fatty liver, bilious conditions. Hyperacidity, acid reflux, inflammatory and ulcerative conditions of middle GI tract.
- Headaches, migraines, irritability. Eyestrain, red sore eyes. Purulent conditions. High cholesterol, cardiovascular disorders. Gingivitis. Bleeding disorders from excess heat, choler in the blood. Hypertension, stress disorders.
Famous Choleric Personalities; Napoleon, Bill Gates, Micheal Jordan, Margaret Thatcher
The second is the leaning type. They are sensitive people who have developed a shell around themselves which protects them, but they must rely on others to carry them through life's difficulties. They have low energy levels and so become dependent. When overwhelmed, they develop what we typically think of as neurotic symptoms: phobias, obsessions and compulsions, general anxiety, hysteria, amnesias, and so on, depending on individual details of their lifestyle.
If you had too much phlegm, you would be phlegmatic (cold and wet) and be sluggish. This is roughly the leaning type.
They may be very receptive and shy and often prefer stability to uncertainty and change.
Here is a list of the common personality traits: Good natured, benevolent, kind. Nurturing, compassionate, sympathetic, charitable. Great faith, patience, devotion; tends to be religious, spiritual.
Sensitive, sentimental, emotional, empathetic. Passive, slow, sluggish; averse to exertion or exercise. Calm, relaxed, takes life easy. Excessive sluggishness, torpor can lead to depression.
They are most prone to;
- Phlegm congestion. Water retention, edema. Lymphatic congestion,
obstruction. Poor veinous circulation. Gastric atony, slow
digestion. Hypothyroid, myxedema.

The third type is the avoiding type. These have the lowest levels of energy and only survive by essentially avoiding life -- especially other people. When pushed to the limits, they tend to become psychotic, retreating finally into their own personal worlds.
If you had too much black bile you would be melancholy (cold and dry) and tend to be sad constantly. This is roughly the avoiding type.
Here are common personality traits: Practical, pragmatic, realistic. Efficient, reliable, dependable. A reflective, stoic, philosophical bent. Can be nervous, high strung.

Their most common Personality Traits are: Exuberant, enthusiastic, outgoing. Optimistic, confident, poised, graceful. Expansive, generous.
Romantically inclined; loves beauty, aesthetics, the arts. Sensual, indulgent nature. Sociable, gregarious, lighthearted, cheerful.
