Creating The Perfect Lesson Plan

Introduction:

You may be wondering how to create the perfect lesson plan that will best fit your students. Coming up with ideas may be hard, taking into account all the different learners you may have. However, there are many ways to incorporate your overwhelming flow of creativity in order to make an inclusive lesson. The following article teaches you the steps and explanations to filling out the edTPA format properly.

Learning Objective

The learning objective is your expected end goal. While determining the learning objective you must ask yourself "How do I measure student learning?" For instance, if you are planning to create a lesson for a social studies class, a structured example may be:

Objective: Students will be able to choose a current event of their choice and write a 1 page summary in class.

Do not confuse this with the central focus! It almost sounds similar, however they are very different.

Central Focus

It is a short description of what your lesson or unit is trying to accomplish. Shift your focus to the following questions in order to mold your ideas. "What is the purpose of this lesson and what should my students take away from it?"

Is it mastering multiplication tactics through various group activities?

Could it be understanding real world issues by examining the media, newspapers,

textbooks and the internet?

The choice is yours!

Academic Language Demands

This is where you include what vocabulary shall be used as well as defining them for your students. This is not an invitation to list every word in the dictionary, and make sure the language demands are appropriate for your age group. This section can be written as a list or paragraph form.

Here is an example of it written in list form!!

Plagiarism: The practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own

Current: Belonging to the present time; happening or being used or done now

Issues: An important topic or problem for debate or discussion

Global: Relating to the whole world; worldwide.

The Media: The main means of mass communication (broadcasting, publishing, and the Internet), regarded collectively.

I preferably find listing them easier. As a teacher you will frequently be checking your lesson plan to make sure you are still on the right track. Therefore make the lesson plan structure beneficial to you.

Launch

The launch is the most important and requires the most thought because it sets the stage for the rest of the lesson. You want your launch to be as exciting as possible, that way students are engaged from start to finish. Keep this section short, brief, and thrilling.

Instructional Procedure (Explore)

This is the start of your teaching process. You should write about what instructions you’ll give to your students in order for them to follow along. Introduce the lesson a little more as well as your intentions behind it. Briefly review what activity this will roll into

Structured Practice and Application

It’s the students turn! Whether it be independent, pairs, or group work.

This is the section where you are able to evaluate the students performance. You should be asking yourself “Are they understanding the material that was presented to them? Was this lesson successful?” Describe what activity they are doing and how long they should take to complete it.

Closure

Summarize the lesson in a few sentences. You can end your day with a group discussion, or maybe a quick little exit slip. Perhaps ask the class if they have any questions about the lesson in case some students were unclear.

Rationale + Planning Commentary

You might have noticed the rationale box on each column in the 3rd section of the lesson plan. Those boxes should be no more than 2-3 sentences summarizing the points you have made. Relate it back to student learning.

As for planning commentary, there are guided questions you are given to follow along to. Not all of them have to be answered, but generally it is a summary of your entire lesson plan and its efficiency in the schools education system.
