What Is Hypnosis Anyway And Why Should You Learn Covert Hypnosis?
What you probably already know (or should know), hypnosis isn't mind control. It's also not limited only to a therapeutic setting, where a hypnotherapist swings a watch in front of your eyes and says: "Keep your eyes on the watch... your eyelids are getting heavier and heavier... you are beginning to drift away and follow my every word..."
It's also not only limited to the stage hypnosis shows, where a stage hypnotist invites one or more people on stage and performs funny and impressive feats, sometimes using real hypnotic phenomena and sometimes just the performance-pressure on the volunteers that rather go along with the suggestions than bail in the middle of the show.
And last but not least, hypnosis also has nothing to do with sleep (although the term hypnosis comes from the Greek word hypnos, which means sleep).
There are several definitions of hypnosis (last time I checked, there were at least eight), but one of them is used most commonly and it says:
In other words, hypnosis is a state of mind, when you don't critically evaluate the information you're receiving and you respond to suggestion, which in turn has to be acceptable to you on some level or in some form or another.
Hypnosis happens very briefly many times a day, most prominently just before you fall asleep and as you're waking up.
Another example is when you're shifting attention on something else from what you're paying attention to at the moment.
Yet another example is when you interrupt a specific pattern you're used doing - the so called pattern interrupt hypnosis induction.
An example of a pattern interrupt hypnosis induction
We shake hands every day. So much so that it has became an automatic response when you meet someone. You don't even think about it, you just extend your hand and shake another person's hand.
It's s an unconscious learned pattern that if it's interrupted for some reason, for a very brief moment, the unconscious mind doesn't know what to do and it calls upon the conscious mind for instructions.
The interrupt can happen unintentionally, when, for example, you bump your hand into an obstacle you didn't see, or more intentionally, for example, the other person does something differently in the middle of shaking - like offering the hand to be kissed just before you got to shake it.
This induces a very short, but a very useful trance indeed.
A famous American hypnotist and the father of indirect hypnosis and conversational hypnosis, Milton H. Erickson, devised a hypnosis induction technique called the hand shake interrupt hypnosis induction. It was picked up, expanded on and popularized by Richard Bandler, cofounder of neuro linguistic programming (NLP).
This induction isn't usually used in a covert hypnosis setting because it just looks strange. But in a clinical setting or for demonstrational purposes, it is a very useful induction technique.
You can see how the technique works in the video below:
What's So Special About Covert Hypnosis?
Well, with "regular hypnosis" you ask a person and get permission to hypnotize them. With covert hypnosis you don't. You're essentially guiding them into a trance and a state of heightened suggestibility during a seemingly normal everyday conversation.
In covert hypnosis you usually won't see the more profound hypnotic phenomena (catatonic states, hallucinations, get their hands "stuck" on walls, forgetting their name or numbers etc.) but you will be able to gently guide them into a state where you can very easily suggest how they should feel, how they should react to certain things (maybe you or your product!), what they should do (maybe buy you a drink) and so on. You can easily cure phobias, even get them to stop smoking, but this takes some advanced experience and you should always know that such things aren't your decision. Only do this if your friends or clients expressly wanted to get rid of those issues.
Sometimes, with very suggestible people (about 10% of the population), you can go even further and get genuine hypnotic phenomena with them and have some fun - but be very careful not to cause permanent damage!
So, as you can probably notice, it is important to study and learn covert hypnosis because if you don't know the techniques, covert hypnosis is virtually undetectable.
Even if you, for some strange reason, don't want to learn it or use it, you can still fall victim to it if you don't know it.
Now, you don't have to get paranoid, not many people know about covert hypnosis or if they do, they very seldom use it in the real world. Having said that, there are many professionals, especially sales people, that are studying it and using it on potential customers daily. Not to mention certain politicians that pay a lot for their public speaking trainers and advisers.
Covert Hypnosis And Seduction
In the seventies, covert hypnosis was introduced in the world of seduction by Ross Jeffries.
He trained NLP with Richard Bandler and found the uses for it to seduce women. His techniques are so effective that after writing several best-selling books, and producing many home study courses, he still runs wildly popular and well attended seminars on what he calls speed seduction. He was also mentioned in the internationally best selling book "The Game" by Neil Strauss.
He introduced many concepts and terms in the seduction community that are still used and talked about today, for example AFC (Average Frustrated Chum, referring to men who are frustrated because they can't get the kinds of women they want and have to settle for whom they happen to have "luck" with).
Speed seduction uses the concepts of covert hypnosis like language patterns, tonality, embedded commands, anchoring, pacing and leading, metaphor, altered states inductions, double-binds, fractionation, suggestion and many more to instil fascination, connection, desire, lust or any other emotion in women so they naturally fall in love with you during a course of seemingly normal conversation.
He also wrote some hypnotic seduction poems that help achieve a similar effect if you read them to a girl you like.
Of course, learning speed seduction is, like covert hypnosis, a relatively serious undertaking, demanding a lot of practice and devotion but it gives many rewards in the end.
Hypnotic Language Patterns
Hypnotic language patterns are specifically designed, word for word, instructions on how to deliver a message in such a form as to get a likely favourable response.
Language patterns range from a few specific lines you deliver before your command to elaborate, long almost stories you tell in order to evoke certain feelings, emotions, thoughts or other responses.
An example of a simple and effective language pattern might be:
"I wouldn't tell you to like and share this website with your friends now, but I'd be very thankful if you did"
Here I used "I wouldn't tell you" before I said "Share this website with your friends now".
If I only said share my website, I would be more likely to get resistance but by including "I wouldn't tell you to", I'm putting your mind at ease and you'll more likely follow my suggestion.
An example of a longer language pattern could be something like this:
"I was reading an interesting article on psychology the other day. You know that feeling when you read something and you suddenly realize it's extremely fascinating and engaging, almost up to the point that the whole other world just temporarily disappears and you get completely absorbed... You can almost feel the hair on your neck and at the back of your head slowly rising and you just begin to completely follow every word of the text. And all of the sudden you find yourself wanting to share this information with your friends? Well, there are specific neuro-chemicals that get released at this moment that make you feel like you want to be the one that is the first to give your friends this information and when you do, another set of chemicals are released that make you feel good about yourself and give you a feeling of accomplishment because you're now the cause of good feelings in your friends and that is rewarding in many different levels."
Now, this pattern acts a bit differently. First, by stating I was reading an interesting article on psychology, I'm telling your conscious mind that it can relax and take in the information without questioning it too much - after all, scientists came up with the data and it isn't a debate between you and me.
Second, I ask a question that actually directs your thoughts and helps you begin to feel those wonderful feelings of fascination. Then I gave a suggestion that you begin to follow every word in the text.
Third, I use the phrase "all of the sudden" to make it seem more unconscious and thus more likely you'll accept the following suggestion and feel as if it was your own idea.
Then I strengthen the motivation for action by giving a good reason why you should do it.
There are tons of different language patterns to achieve different things in your subjects but it's usually better to write your own in order to tailor them to your personality and your style of speaking.
However, there are several universal short hypnotic language patterns that work very well in most situations and increase the probability of getting a favourable outcome for you as a persuader. They are summed up in a wonderful video made by Kevin Hogan, professional speaker, professor and teacher of the science of influence.
6 Hypnotic Language Patterns That You Can Use Today
Here's a quick list of patterns that are presented in the video:
- I wouldn't tell you to...
- You might want to...
- What is it that helps you know that you want...
- You don't have to... now
- Why is it that some people see X and most people don't
- I don't know if...
Use them often and use them well. You'll see more compliance from people than you do now.

It can, but I use a different method. When I shake hands, I just grab the hand as you would normally do an hold it up in a slightly unnatural way. This way the pattern is also interrupted as the normal course of action is at least shaking the hand up and down slightly. When you just do a slightly exaggerated upward motion and hold the hand there, it puts them in a suggestive state for about a second. You can get a suggestion or two in there. I used to do this for fun at parties to get hugs and dances (it's really funny, you just extend your hand and when she tries to do a handshake, you do the interrupt and say: "Let's dance"). Most of the times, they just hug you and you start to dance. Of course, the correct context is also there and everything but it's a fun way to practice.
