Comparison of tuition costs of higher education around the world

Studying at university is an expensive investment. Tuition fees have a disincentive effect on the poor and middle-income students. There has been a general trend towards marked increases in tuition in recent years, even in countries where tuition fees have generally been much lower than average. For example, Canada has seen its tuition fees more than double in the last ten years.

Tuition fees can vary between courses, institutions, and whether the students are resident or international. This hub compares tuition costs of full time undergraduate programmes in America (Canada, United States), Europe (UK, Ireland, France, Germany, the Netherlands), and Australia.

Northern America

United States

The tuition cost in USA varies from $5000 to $30000 per year. About $9000 for resident students and $20000 for international students.

Canadian

Canadian universities are cheapest among UK, USA, Australia. Average domestic tuition is around $9,000, and international tuition around $25,500.

Europe

In recent years, the high-tax Europe has been considering reforming higher education and moving towards a system that charges users. Austria is intensely debating university tuition in the parliament. Six German states call on the parliament to terminate the piece of legislation that exempts college students from paying tuition. In addition, universities in Belgium are beginning to charge an enrolment fee of 500 euros which is same for EU and non-EU students (non-EU students are charged additional 500 euros for social security), while Holland and Italy charge an enrolment fee of 1,000-1,500 euros. Dutch universities charge students of certain departments such as business departments tuition as much as 5,000 euros and students of graduate schools tuition as much as 8,000 euros.

UK

In UK, the maximum tuition fee amount that can be charged to EU students is £3,145 a year (increasing yearly by no more than the rate of inflation). Average tuition for domestic students is around £3000, and for international students about £10,000 a year.

Ireland

€12000 (Euro) per year for international students. EU students pay € 900 registration fee.

France

France has 82 universities, teaching 1.5m students. All are public; none charges tuition fees; undergraduate enrolment charges are a tiny €165. All lecturers are civil servants. Universities cannot select students, who can apply only to ones near them. The results speak for themselves. Not a single French university makes it into the world's top 40 universities.

In France, there is no difference in tuition fees between European and Non-European students. Therefore, policies officially search to improve the quality of the foreign students they receive, making a selection based on excellence and discipline of study. They intend to avoid a "mass phenomenon" of unwanted students in French universities who are not highly motivated and who mainly seek to obtain a visa and to stay in France. In Britain, there is a will to attract a large number of overseas students who pay high tuition fees and who supply important funding to British higher education.

Germany

Germany universities now charge 1000 euro enrolment charge per year, regardless whether the students are from EU or non-EU countries.

Australia

Australia had free education until 1988. Across the English-speaking world, Australia imposes mid-range fees. Nowadays, most full time degree and post graduate degree cost between AUD 10000 to 20000 per annum.

Mecobio on June 12, 2012:

Funny how things are manipulating, claiming that fees increases quality. That is NOT true. First, the top-100 university ranking is done to glorify the universities in english speaking countries, where fees are the highest in the world. For example, one of the criteria is that Universities provide student accommodation. If a university has little accommodation, then that University has less point, and ended up down in the ranking. People has to realize that student accommodations are needed in countries where there exist hyper inflation in rentals, as it is found in Australia, UK, USA, etc. In many countries, the rent is very cheap, and Universities are NOT in the middle of no-where (as seen in USA, etc), but in the middle of cities, where the cost of a rent is far cheaper than student accommodations in USA, UK, etc. As you can see, pure manipulations of the data, to glorify the greedy culture found in certain countries, where university is seen as an industry, rather than a place to improve the education of the people.

To answer some questions: If you like or speak french, go to France. They are free of charge and one of the best in the world. They have masters in english. Forget that world ranking, etc.

By the way, with the introduction of fees, the courses become easier (stundent pay and they will move to the easier university) and the education become low-quality. It is far easier to get an A in USA than in Sweden, where EU student pay NOTHTING for education. The courses in Sweden contain more material per course than many USA universities, i.e. no easier course.

I hope this helps.

For example computer science engineering in tagonrog state university for radio engineering is only 1400$ per year(in english medium for 4 years) and living cost is about 1500 $ per year and there are some leading universities in russia offering aerospace, aeronautical, electrical ,mechanical, automobile, biotechnology engineering and for MBBS,BDS and other medical groups have a good quality of education in world and its cheap many foreign people like enjoying russia especially from U.S,Germany,Brazil,China, india,Mexico etc are studying here there is no trouble its really a worthfull of investing the for more information about it you can visit, russian cultural centre in you're country or mail steven_robertsmorgage or log on to: www.study abroad edu.com, this is a good chance for africans and asians who are from average economy. The cost of university in America is not that high. There are universities that are high, but I have friends who have 4 year degrees that cost them less than $10,000 USD.

One obvious way that foreigners do not always know about would be clep tests. For a $0 fee you can test out of each subject. Many Americans start university in there third year because of this.

universities in Slovakia and Czech republic are still free, as in most of European countries and quality of education there is very good. It is propaganda fed to the people through the media that education if it is free is piece of crap, because it is now comodity, especially in North America. so it has to be presented as the best educational choice one can make. And let us not forget only those universities are preffered amongst employers. What a bunch of crap. Long live propaganda in this world:).

Get a Job, Learn for yourself (not a joke)

University does not teach you anything, you learn for yourself!

Think of it as a Gym for your brain... you can do the exercise without going to the Gym.

It does however provide you with the certification (degree) that you can do the job, but NOT that you know how to do it!

There are solutions:

1. Go to France. It will take you 6 months to learn french if you avoid speaking English and you go in a French school. The school and the university are both free!!

2. Go to Denmark....its also free :)

possibly many other countries.... basically everywhere will be cheaper than £9k UK will cost now.

By the way...I love Scotland for their standing up against the fees!!!

Tuition fees for 2012 entry in the UK (for home/EU students) have been whacked up to £9,000/year in most good universities. The course I want to do is four years with a year abroad, add on about £8,000 per year for accommodation/food/subsistence and the amount of unavoidable debt I'll have is horrifying, it could be as much as £70,000.

I'm 17. My entire life savings would pay for about 5 weeks of university. What the hell am I, and other average working-class people in the UK like me, supposed to do?

The minimum wage in Portugal is 485€ and most people's income is somewhere between 485 and 550€. Tell me this isn't a third-world country!!

Re: US universities, same old problem of non-American's understanding US university tuition. The issue is not one or nationality, it is one of residence. To attend universities in a state of which you are not a resident, you pay the same rate as a non-American. Public universities discount to residents from that state who have paying into the state's coffers through taxes - - states provide a return on investment to their own residents. Don't raise the nationality discrimination flag! There are other places in the world you're more likely to encounter discrimination due to nationality.

This is BS. Most German universities don't charge any tuition, regardless if you are a EU or non EU citizen. Only a few states do charge 500 euros per semester, and they're even cutting back on that.

I'm about to graduate with my BS in Geological Engineering attending the Colorado School of Mines, and may I just say that I have invested well over $200,000 in tuition, fees, books, and housing. (And I lived with my parents over the summer essentially expense-free!) It kills me to hear European students complaining about your meager tuition fees.

Many people think that since Europe has cheaper tuition, their quality of education is also lower than the US or UK. That's a huge misconception. Students cannot simply buy themselves into university like they can in North America - their academic performance plays a major part in enrollment. Here in Canada, as long as I have the money, I can get into uni with a 60% average. The European programs are shorter and more intensive - they actually teach students what they need to know and don't waste time and money on petty elective subjects that have nothing to do with their career!
