Psychology and Colors
The psychology of colors has been investigated and studied by psychiatrists and psychologists for a very long time. One of the first scientists who tried to understand and analyze how colors affect our emotions was psychiatrist Carl Jung from Switzerland.
Doctor Jung believed that people could express feelings through colors. He even was using a colorful painting when treating his patients in order to determine the subconscious influences of each color on human brain.
Those who are dealing with marketing and sales also pay close attention to the colors in order to be able to influence people in purchasing and noticing company's products.
In order to completely understand how colors are affecting people let's analyze them one by one.
Did you know that...
- Every computer displays 16,8 million colors to create one image.
- The number of colors is infinitive.
- Every person can see 10 million colors.
Colour Analysis - Green and Shades of Blue
Green color typically can be found in surrounding us natural environment and it is used in logos of companies associated with plants and nature, for this reason, the color is widely used by florists and landscape architects. Green is the color that exudes tranquility and peace. So it is good for businesses related to financial categories because it represents also wealth. Doctors, dentists and health-care companies, often use green to symbolize good health and well-being.
- Shades of blue
The manufacturers of air fresheners and cotton sheets are using shades of blue to promote freshness. On the other hand, deep blue logos are also used by academics. Generally, blue shades are associated with safety, reliability, and authority. For this reason, many companies of electronic and electric appliances prefer blue to emphasize the reliability of the product. Consider, for example, companies such as Samsung, IBM, Intel, Hewlett Packard, General Electric and others.
- Bright Red Color
Red color symbolizes insight, intense hunger and also a need of health assistance. Red Cross (Health) or even restaurants like MacDonald's (hunger) are the best examples of using red color. For decades, the red color was used to inform the public about something important. It can easily be understood why the road signs have a red color and why it was chosen for traffic lights.
Also, the red is associated with power. The logo of Superman has a strong red color and it represents the superpower of super hero. Ferrari prefers this color as its base in order to show the power of its cars. Finally, red is the color of passion, so it couldn't be missing from the marketing and advertising of cosmetics.
If you want to get the attention of someone you should also use red. It is the first color to look at and it is also the color of energy. It is associated with movement and excitement. Maybe red clothes are adding a few pounds but they do not allow you to pass unnoticed. Red is the symbol of life, that is the main reason why brides in China are using red gown for wedding. It is the most used color in celebrations of love.
Yellow and Black
The shades of yellow are used to show anyone the helpfulness and the knowledge of a person or of company. For example, the yellow pages or courier company UPS. Yellow is also used by hotels in tropical destinations and by the companies dealing with solar energy. Finally, the yellow gives a feeling of warmth and happiness but sometimes it works also as a warning. For example, many road signs are yellow and they inform us if something is being repaired or being fixed on the road.
Black is the color of power, strength and stability. It is associated with intelligence and wit. Black clothes make us look slimmer. But as black is also the darkest color, sometimes it can be associated with evil. In the West, black expresses unhappiness. Generally, it is a color that always causes strong emotions.
White and Brown Colors Meaning
For the majority of the world, white is the color of purity, thus we have white wedding dresses. The sense of cleanliness and safety promotes light and positivity. The absence of color or white color can show neutrality. In some eastern parts of the world, white is associated with mourning.
Brown is reliability, stability and friendship. Many people are choosing it as favorite one. It is the color of the earth, which could symbolize stability as it is associated with everything natural and organic. Be careful though because in India it is the color of mourning.
Grey and Purple Colors Meaning
In grey, we see something practical, timeless, workable and constant. Usually grey leads to zero feelings, but we must mention that in the presence of grey products, we have a sense of stability and confidence. The shades of grey are associated with unpleasant feelings, ageing and disorientation. The silver however often shows strong character.
What color was used to make clothes worn by queens and kings? Certainly, it was purple... The most royal one that symbolizes wealth, prosperity and culture. It stimulates brain activity and helps in solving puzzles. The careful use of purple can symbolize a touch of mystery, wisdom and respect. All shades of purple used to be worn by girls at puberty.
No wonder big companies like Pepsi Cola, Microsoft, Apple or Google are using more than two colors in their logos. By combining a few colors they are trying to make customers think, what each color represents. Our brain connects to the basic colors with many concepts simultaneously and we accept these colors as the symbols of peace, self-confidence, authority and trust.

I have studied psychology through the Teachings of the Ascended Masters East and West. The theories presented through the Teachings are based on causal colors. Red and black, for example, are not worn for students serious about the spiritual studies.
For the most part, your descriptions are commonly accepted by people in sales and art. Technically, white and black are not colors, but the presence or absence of them.
Thank you for writing about this subject.
