The Real Story

There has been much speculation about the new Covid 19 Vaccinations.

Are they safe? Haven't they been made too quickly? And so on.

Most of this information has been spread around Facebook and other Social Network sites by people who have no understanding of the virus or the process in which the Vaccine is made.

In plain English, it is called scaremongering.

Throughout history, there have been many who claim anything new is Witchcraft.

These people on Facebook are basically just the modern equivalent.

One person thinks they know it all because they read or listened to something they believe is right. Most of the time they either hear it wrong or don't understand what is being said. This itself spreads like a virus across Social Media.

Vaccines were first invented in 1796 by Edward Jenner.

For more information on Vaccination through the years, scroll down to Sources at the bottom of the page.

So, what is the truth?

The following statements were written by scientists who have been working on the Covid vaccine and have many years of training behind them.

So read on for the real truth behind the Covid vaccine.

Vaccines alter your DNA - FALSE

A Facebook post that was shared thousands of times and has since been censored by the platform has stated that the Covid 19 Vaccine will alter your DNA.

They say it will wrap itself into your system, and you will essentially become a genetically modified human being.

Professor Pennington stated it is not possible however as the covid treatments are what is known as mRNA vaccines.

Which, rather than put weak or inactive germs into our bodies, like many vaccines, instead teach the body how to make a protein which triggers an immune response.

Scroll to Continue

That immune response produces antibodies, which is what protects vaccinated people from becoming infected if the real virus enters their body.

Professor Pennington goes on to say;

'The Covid virus vaccine doesn't go anywhere near your DNA. It is not possible to change a person's DNA'.

Immunization currently prevents 2-3 million deaths every year. Immunization prevents deaths every year in all age groups from diseases like diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), influenza and measles. It is one of the most successful and cost-effective public health interventions.

Aborted Foetus in Vaccine? Well, Yes and No!

Another social media user falsely claims that the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine contains cells from an aborted male foetus.

The video shared on social media claimed the vaccine uses MRC-5 cell lines which were originally developed from research taken from the lung tissue of a 14 week old aborted male foetus.

however, AstraZeneca has confirmed its vaccine was not developed using MRC-5 cell lines.

It does say, however, that it does use a different cell strain, taken from a female foetus aborted in the 1970s. This has been widely known and confirmed.

Just the cells are used to propagate the virus for the vaccine. Therefore, these cells do not make it into the final vaccine jab.

Repeat of the Thalidomide Scandal - FALSE

Sceptics of the new vaccine have compared it to the infamous anti morning sickness drug used in the fifties and sixties.

Thalidomide was given to pregnant women and led to thousands of miscarriages and children with birth defects. This resulted in many babies being born with no arms or legs and other disabilities. it is regarded as one of the biggest man-made medical disasters ever.

Professor Pennington stated:

'Thalidomide is a very dangerous red herring. It is totally irrelevant because it was never tested in the same way.

The Thalidomide Society which offers victim support said the comparison is an insult to the covid vaccines.'

Vaccines contain Microchips - FALSE

The name Bill Gates is regularly featured in wild conspiracies as an arch-villain attempting to take over the world!

But the latest theory might just be the wackiest and stupid yet.

Anti-vaxxers claim the Microsoft founder wants to put microchips into people via a covid vaccine!

No, you couldn't make it up!

This is probably because they learned that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had funded a study in the US to encode medical history on a patient. using a dye with a vaccine.

Which, if this had been successful I personally think it would have been a great idea.

Because if someone collapsed and needed medical help the paramedics/doctors would be able to scan them and find out their medical history much quicker than tracking down their relatives and looking it up.

However, it had never been tested on humans and it definitely did not include any hardware technology such as microchips.

Professor Pennington said;

'The microchips would have to be so small they wouldn't work. it would be impossible.'

Edward Jenner scraped pus from cowpox blisters on the hands of Sarah Nelmes, a milkmaid who had caught cowpox from a cow called Blossom, and inoculated Phipps in both arms that day.

Subsequently producing in Phipps a fever but no full-blown infection. This later proved that he had also cured smallpox too.

The first proven inoculation was born.

It was Created too Quickly - FALSE

One concern by many on Social Media is that the vaccine cannot be safe because of the speed at which it has been approved.

professor Pennington stated;

'The science behind this vaccine has been on the go for several years.

The speed is more to do with the trials, they haven't been rushed through. They've managed to recruit so many volunteers because of the big problem that covid is causing worldwide.

What you have to understand is, millions of pounds of investment have flown into the trials, accelerating the usually long and laborious funding process.

But the usual standards for safety and efficacy haven't changed.

In the UK the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, or MHRA, approved the Pfizer vaccine this week.'

Elisa Granato 'I'm still Here!

Early Volunteers have Died - FALSE

Anti-vaxxers have claimed that a female doctor taking part in the early trial of the new vaccine had died.

But this couldn't be farther from the truth. In fact, she has recently come forward to say she is alive and doing fine.

the fake article started circulating on social media back in April. and claimed that microbiologist Elisa Granato who was taking part in the Oxford University trial had died from complications after being injected with the vaccine.

the government denounced the claim.

Dr Granato took to Twitter to express her anger;

'Nothing like waking up to a fake article on your death. I'm doing fine everyone.'

Professor Sikora

Professor Sikora studied medical science and biochemistry at Cambridge, where he obtained a double first.

He later became a research student at the MRC Laboratory for Molecular Biology in Cambridge working with Nobel Prize winner, Dr Sydney Brenner.

He obtained his PhD and became a clinical fellow at Stanford University, California before returning to direct the Ludwig Institute in Cambridge

Vaccines will be Mandatory - FALSE

Another Facebook post which was once again, widely shared, wrongly claimed that the vaccine could be made mandatory.

This is something Professor Sikora said would simple never happen. Even though The Public Health Control of Disease Act 1984, gives the government the power to prevent, control, and mitigate, the spread of an infection or contamination it cannot force someone to take a medical treatment, including a vaccine if they do not want it. That would be against the law.

However, travel restrictions here or abroad could make not having a jab difficult. Professor Sikora said people might find they wont be able to travel to Australia or another country unless you have had the jab.

But that is just hearsay at the moment. Each country will have a different set of rules regarding the vaccine. And of course, this wouldn't be the first time this has happened. Many diseases or viruses such as Yellow Fever and Small Pox have always needed a vaccine certificate to travel.

Bet you didn't know that!

Untested Vaccine Will be rolled Out - FALSE

Charity Fullfact, which is a Registered Charity, says it has seen a number of Facebook posts claiming the government is planning to change the law to allow untested and unlicensed vaccines to be given to the public in light of the covid 19 pandemic..

All experts insist this is simply not true.

Professor Pennington added;

'Many thousands of people have volunteered to be guinea pigs. I don't think any vaccine has been tested as rigorously as this one.

this myth is also possibly to do with a misunderstanding about Medical Administration. The government did hold a meeting about whether it should change the rules concerning unlicensed vaccines but unlicensed definitely does not mean untested. And manufacturers will still be culpable if their vaccine did not meet safety standards.'

That one sounds rather strange, but I wouldn't worry about it in the case of this vaccine. It is completely above board.

Edward Jenner

The Value of Vaccines

So there you go.

What people don't seem to realise is one of the most fundamentally obvious things staring them in the face.

Today we have the technology. The reason why it took so long to make a vaccine in the past was that it was rather like baking a cake with a pitchfork in the dark!

The scientists back in history, even 20 years ago, had to use the most basic of instruments.

Think about it. When the first space capsule left the earth there less tech and computer info than what we, today, have in our cell phones! And yet they did it.

In a science lab it wasn't that much different.

As I mentioned above, the first vaccine made by Edward Jenner the English Scientist and Physician literally scraped pus from one person, and inserted it into another. Therefore inventing the first successful vaccine for smallpox!

At least we don't have to do it that way anymore!

Vaccines have been around a long time. There have been hundreds of thousands of people saved because of this method.

To fight against this covid 19 vaccine is just stupidity at its best.

I suggest you read the following to put your mind at rest.

The value of Vaccines.

William Shakespeare 2nd man to have the corona virus vaccine.

William Shakespeare 2nd man to have the corona virus vaccine.

08/12/2020 Historic in More ways than One!

The first person to be vaccinated in England today was named as Margaret Keenan, a 90 year old grandmother from Northern Ireland originally, but has lived in Coventry for the last 60 years.

The second person to be given the vaccine was William Shakespeare.

Yes you read that right!

The famous namesake comes from Warwickshire England as is 81 years old.

It could only happen in England!

I suppose you could say 'Alls Well that Ends Well!'

Hi Adrienne, I couldn't find your articles on the feed, sorry. But I did read your training puppies. I totally agree with you. I remember seeing someone who was constantly petting and handling their puppy. It was obviously very uncomfortable.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 16, 2020:

Thanks Adrienne, yes I agree. thanks for reading.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 16, 2020:

Hi Rodric, thanks so much for reading.

Adrienne Farricelli on December 15, 2020:

I am glad you posted all these myths and debunked them with such credible, autoritative facts. The more I learn about this vaccine, the more I feel that vaccinating ourselves against Covid19 is ultimately a big form of altruism.

Rodric Anthony Johnson from Surprise, Arizona on December 15, 2020:

I don't buy into those claims mentioned in this article by the nay sayers, but I am delighted by the information that I have read. I appreciate your time given to educate the international public.

Neil, I appreciate this post by you. Well, comments are now at a premium and its a retrograde step but thank you.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 13, 2020:

I have just read your article about the amazing 100 year old man. I am sorry I cannot find your link here to put my comment on. but it was a fascinating story.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 13, 2020:

You may be right MG. But you have to remember that vaccines for all illnesses in the past were made in a very primitive way. This one is pure science in a modern lab.

MG Singh emge from Singapore on December 12, 2020:

Neil, I think the vaccine is being rushed in and this is just the beginning the after-effects will come after 6 months.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 12, 2020:

Thanks manatita. Yes I saw about the two who had a reaction. I do hope its not a reoccurring thing. Thanks so much for reading.

manatita44 from london on December 11, 2020:

Nell, an obviously well researched article and presented with some evidence by authorities. It is likely that I would take the vaccine and I have taken vaccines before.

Some have genuine concerns though. Vaccines overall are beneficial but in some ways, are like any drug, including Acetaminophen. It is one of the safest on the market but can still kill.

The yellow fever jab is not encouraged in the over 60's as it can create problems for some and the current vaccine, has already created problems for two of the people vaccinated. They got anaphylaxis. This led to Pfizer issuing new guidelines, to include emergency treatment and resus trolleys being available, just in case.

However, I do support most of what you say. Just that concerns are necessary, as mistakes can happen and concerns do encourage a company or companies to improve their medicines and vaccines.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 11, 2020:

I am not surprised James. I wouldn't trust them with a stick and a ball! Over here in England I do trust the vaccine, and will take it. Thanks for reading.

James Timothy Peters from Hammond, Indiana on December 11, 2020:

Millions of Chinese aren't trusting the vaccine China has provided. As the Wall Street Journal reported, "Chinese authorities have inoculated nearly one million Chinese people with a Covid-19 vaccine from Sinopharm, though the state company has yet to provide solid clinical evidence of efficacy."

This is a useful and important article, Nell. Vaccination to protect people from the coronavirus is probably going to be very important. Thanks for sharing the information.

MG Singh from UAE on December 08, 2020:

This is an interesting article on a topical subject. The vaccine has come and UK and Russia are vaccinating. I only hope sufficient tests have been done and corners not cut.

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on December 08, 2020:

Nell, I'm glad you decided to write an article dispelling social media b.s. I stay away from FB because of the opinionated posts that are sparked by people who WANT to be outraged and believe the unbelievable. I would advise you to limit your social media time. Frankly, my mind has better things to do with its time. So do my emotions. Post something sweet and heartwarming, yes. Don't even respond to notifications that have negative connotations or topics. Social media can be a virus in and of itself. No need for a vaccination of you socially distance yourself from social media! Just sayin'.....

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 08, 2020:

Hi Flourish, I just hope the vaccine works quickly and gets rid of the horrible thing. Keep safe, and thanks.

FlourishAnyway from USA on December 08, 2020:

Some of these conspiracy beliefs are so over-the-top that I just shake my head. Thanks for setting things straight. I imagine we will have a proportion of holdouts and there will be lingering issues controlling the disease as a result. Their nonadherence will impact us all.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 08, 2020:

I came back to say I read your Gin article Sp. Greaney. I remember making gin years ago. When we went fruit picking. I can't remember the name of the fruit, I just followed my hubby and aimed for the right ones, lol!

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 08, 2020:

Exactly SP. I agree that people should make up their own mind whether to take it, but only if they know all the facts. Thanks so much for reading.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 08, 2020:

Thanks Peggy. Yes it was rolled out over here today, mainly for the over 80s. It seemed so historical, I just hope it starts to stop the virus. thanks for reading.

Sp Greaney from Ireland on December 08, 2020:

Thanks for sharing an article that gives answers to all those myths flying around. There is always going to be people worried about any new vaccine which I can understand. But you got to think long term and think about your life without the vaccine. People need to make up their own mind and not let others influence them.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on December 08, 2020:

Thanks for writing this informative article. When scientists like Dr. Fauci say that they will take the vaccine when it becomes available, and he would have his family members line up to take it, that is good enough for me. Line me up! The first people who will get it in our country are those working in the medical field and nursing home residents. It will gradually be rolled out to the general public over time.

Nell, I was able to read your excellent, very informative article. I don't know what was wrong earlier today.

I read some of those invalid remarks on Facebook. I even read on Facebook that the vaccine woud make women sterile. I am glad to read your article that speaks to all of these lies. Thanks, Nell.

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 08, 2020:

Not available Pamela?

Nell Rose (author) from England on December 08, 2020:

Thanks Ann, yes I can see your comment. I know, Shakespeare lol! But yes did you see the anti vaxxer on tv? she didn't believe in the vaccine or even the virus! Jeesh! You just cannot cure stupid! Thanks as always.

I would really like to read this article but it is not available, Nell.

Ann Carr on December 08, 2020:

Well done, Nell! (I'm not sure if this comment is going to work as I went to sign in and it immediately jumped to a version of this on the new 'hubpages' format.) Anyway, I'm hoping it works. If not, I'm going to copy it so that I can paste it onto the 'feed' version.

It's about time someone set out all these ridiculous claims about the vaccine. I can't wait to have mine. It will let us go back to normal.

I laughed this morning when I heard about William Shakespeare, especially as he's from Warwickshire!

Great hub, Nell!
