Imperative Guidelines For Organizing Excursions

Being a language teacher, I have explained through literature and role-play the essence to learn life's lessons from stories and ancestors.

Introduction

Taking children on excursions is an integral part of the teaching-learning process. It should be a top priority for schools and homes. It’s an absolute necessity.

These trips are of many types. But organizing it at home or school doesn't matter. It should be done.

They provide a platform that helps them learn new things, develop team spirit, and enjoy. An excursion organized by the school provides practical learnings.

Such trips not only enhance knowledge of the place but also helps them to learn to live in any circumstances. In comparison, school teaching gives only academic knowledge

Such outings help build confidence in kids. They gain all-round development in the long run and become better prepared to face the challenges of life.

Organization

A trip has to be chalked out very minutely, be it the school's organizing committee or the parents.

First a list of the places, for the proposed trip and possible dates, is fixed. Following up, permission is taken from the competent authorities.

The excursions are chosen from the following:

1.Local sight-seeing:

  • Picnic to a park or a lakeside
  • Adventure trips
  • Social activity trips
  • Gardening, Tree plantation, and Farming trips

2. Educational Trips:

  • Geographical
  • Historical
  • Student Exchange programs
  • Museum and National parks

The Fixtures

The following steps are undertaken at school after the excursion is approved:

1. A reliable tour operator is appointed to arrange everything.

  • He provides complete tour packages of places and a detailed itinerary.
  • He submits the proposed costs for the different packages and the amount payable by the school.
  • He later goes about arranging travel tickets, hotel accommodations, transportations, and food.
  • He agrees to provide an informed guide during the tour.

Then a meeting of the organizing committee is held. The place, date, and time are finalized by consensus. The classes for the trip are decided.

Lastly, a circular is sent to the concerned classes with complete information. It includes the last date for submission of names along with the charges payable by each child.

Field Trips

The children are taken on some local field trips. These are sometimes pre-planned project work.

  • The children come at the scheduled time to school and proceed by vehicle.
  • The class teacher has the overall responsibility of his wards.
  • The teacher has a pre-planned strategy for the work. He is helped by other subject teachers.
  • The children are divided into small groups with a teacher accompanying them. A child is given charge of each group.
  • Each group is assigned a specific task at the village. At first, they move around talking to the village elders.
  • Then with the help of the elders, they collect the aged, adults, and children.
  • After that, they sit down at open places, teaching and giving them vocational training in some work or provide them language learning.

Picnic at Park or Lakeside

The schedule is followed thus:

● The day, date, time, and classes are fixed beforehand.

● The arrangements for groceries, vegetables, non-veg items, eggs, bread, butter, cold drinks, tea, coffee, and other things are completed.

● Students and teachers load the materials on the bus with the help of the office staff and cooks.

● Then they proceed to their destinations enjoying and singing. There they learn how to work as a team and live in society.

Students' Exchange Program

The next phase is the students’ exchange program. It may be in their own country or other countries.

  • The destination and participating schools are earmarked.
  • The participating schools and their management sit down and finalize modalities.
  • The senior teachers of the schools’ give it a final shape.
  • Such inter-school trips help students to understand various cultures, languages, food habits, and customs prevalent in society.
  • Thus they learn to build harmonious bonds with each other.
