Importance Of The Word Of God
Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Proverbs 6:2
The Power of the Spoken Word
Words are powerful. Many things could be done through the ordinary words of men. Hence, Ecclesiastes 8:4 says Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
Word rightly spoken can bring solutions to problems and if otherwise could cause war and increase the problems.Hence, Proverbs 15:23 says A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!
Words can scatter things, and can also bring things together too.The case of Rehoboam readily comes to mind here. He hearkened to the voice of the Youths and spoke harshly to the Elders. ...So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents. (1 kings 12:16). The United Kingdom of Israel was divided because of his words.
Words spoken in anger can cause trouble and consequently terminatesdestiny abruptly. For example, Moses and Aaron spoke in anger to the people in Nu 20:10...Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? This statement made God to close up his divine assignment, hence, sealed up his destiny (Num 20:12).
Through words, we can show personal conviction and determination, hence, affirming divine stand. For example, in Joshua 24:15, Joshua declared....And if it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.
Word can bind wounds and can also cause wounds. Proverbs 25:11 says A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.
Words of men can mislead sometimes. For example, in Genesis 16:2...Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. The problem created by this action is still evident today.
Words of men can entice and consequently ensnare. For example, it was sweet words Delilah used toentice andcaptured mighty Samson. Judges 16:16-17 says And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death; That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, andI shall become weak, and be like any other man.Samson ended very badly (Read Judges 16:4-31).
By the pronouncement of a King, destiny can be saved ordestroyed. By the ordinary word of a king, prisoners can be set free orcould be enslaved by the same word of mouth.
For example, Joseph was brought out of prison and thereafter enthroned as the first Prime Minister in Egypt by the words of Pharaoh. Genesis 41:14 said...Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved himself, and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh...And in verses40-41,King Pharaoh pronounced...Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. Nobody queried him on all this declaration because there is power in the word of a king, who can say what saith thou.
On the other hand, King Ahasuerus made a pronouncement against Haman....Hang him thereon. So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified. (Esther 7:9-10).
Words express mood. Hence, Proverbs 16:14 says The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it....The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass (Proverbs 19:12).
In fact, a man can ensnare himself by the confession of his mouth. Proverbs 18:21 says Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Through the lies of men, innocent ones could be killed and their destinies destroyed. For example, in 1Kings 21:12-13, men lied against Naboth and set him up:They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. Based on lies, he was stoned to death (vs 14).
Words can enhance or endanger peace, depending on how it is spoken. Proverbs 15:1 says A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievouswords stir up anger. Hence, we should mind the tone and manner of our words.
In short, words could be destructive or constructive. Words can make or mar. Hence, we should not undermine the power of spoken words.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55:11
The Word of God is Extremely Powerful
Now if ordinary words spoken by mortal men could be so powerful, how much more the Word of God which we all know is equal to God. John 1:1 said clearly: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Hence, God honours His word above His name. God cannot deny Himself.
God will always honour His words in the mouth of His servants. For example, in 1 Kings 17:1 Elijah the Tishbite, the prophet of God declared to...Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to myword. And it was so according to what he said “....according to myword”.
The bibleremarked in James 5:17, Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. This means, what Elijah did, I can also do likewise because we are both subject to like passions.
In Joshua 10: 12-14, the Bible says Joshua spake...to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day. And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel.
Characteristics of the Word of God:
The Word of God is different from the words of men. The following characteristics clearly distinguished the word of God from the ordinary words of men.
The Word of God is life, hence, gives life.
The word of God is life and gives life. John 6:63 affirmed: It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
The Word of God is spirit, hence, a Divine Personality.
The Word of God can create because Jesus Christ confirmed that ...they are spirit, and they are life. Hence, anything that has spirit and life is a being. We can therefore conclude that the Word is a Divine Personality. Hence, John 1:14 says And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
The Word of God gives hope.
The Bible says...My soul fainteth for thy salvation: but I hope in thy word.....Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word....I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. (Psalms 119: 81; 114; 130:5).
The Word of God is vigorously alive for ever.
1Peter 1:23 says Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. The Word of God is not dead but alive for ever.
The Word of God has no resistance or barriers.
Hence, Hebrew 4:12 says the Word is....sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The Word of God is pure.
There is no impurity in the Word of God. Psalms 12:6 says The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified.
The Word of God is settled forever.
The word of God remains forever and unchanging. Psalms 119:89 says For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.
The Word of God has creative power.
In Genesis 1:3-4...God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. God created everything by His Word, He commanded them to be and they all came into existence promptly.
The WORD became flesh, hence, John 1:1-5 says, In the beginning, was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
The Word of God is like a fire and a hammer.
Jeremiah 23:29 says Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Hence, the Word of God can set the heart ablaze and break a stony heart.
The Word can save and deliver from hell.
The power for salvation is in the Word of GOD. Hence, James 1:21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. And 1 Peter 1:23 says Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
The Word is light, hence, illuminates our lives.
Psalms 119:130 says The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. While Ephesians 5:14 says, Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. And since Jesus Christ is the Word, He is...the true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. (John 1:9).
The Word is a Judge.
The standard of judgment is the word of God. Matthew 12: 37 says For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
The Word will not return to God void.
Whatsoever God sends His Word to accomplish a thing, such things must be done, because His Word cannot fail. Isaiah 55:10-11says For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
The Word endures forever.
Everything else will die and go, but the Word of God endures forever. Jesus Christ said emphatically in Luke 21:33, Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. 1 Peter 1:25 alsosays But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:21
The importance of injecting the Word of God daily into our hearts
What you constantly inject into your subconscious mind has a way of affecting you either positively or otherwise. Hence, when we daily load our hearts with THE WORD OF GOD, it will produce tremendous and outstanding results. As a matter of fact, the more of the Word of God we know, the better for us. Because one of the sure ways to know God and to relate with Him appropriately is through His WORDs. The amount of the Word of God in you is the level of your godliness. Because the Word is God, it also follows that God is the Word. Hence, His Words must dwell in us richly.
The Word of God is highly essential; hence, we need them daily:
The word of God helps in Prayers
The best way to pray is to push the word of God back to Him and by reminding Himof His words. In order words, pray back the Words of God back to Him. Hence, during prayers, the Word of God should be the reference point. Therefore, to be able to pray acceptably to God, we need the Word.God wants us to remind Him of His words. We are not to use vain words or complaining or mere rhetoric but recount the exact Words of God back to Him. Just tell Him what He said in His Word because the WORD is GOD Himself. Hence,God is bound by His Words, He cannot deny Himself. God is not a man that HE should lie (Number 23:19).
The only way to pray acceptably and according to the Will and Mind of God is by praying according to His Words. Because when we prayed or take any decision according to the Word of God it must be acceptable by God and such prayer or decision will not be in vain. Why? Because the Word of God is perfect....
The Word of God Builds faith
Nothing in this world builds faith like the Word of God.Romans 10:17 says So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.Through the Word of God, we know our stand of faith in God.The daily news and occurrences weaken faith in the worldly system. Hence, we need the Word to build our faith in God (Jude 1: 20).
Confession of faith
Our daily confession is linked to what we possess;hence, we need the confessions of faith daily in the Word of God. Through this, the reality of His promises is done on us. Your daily confession of faith is an expression of what you believe. 2 Corinthians 4: 13 says We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak...
Use in praises and thanksgivingto God
There is no better way to praise and thank God daily than through His Words.During praises and thanksgiving, just recount His Word back to Him. In fact, that pleased Him better than mere rhetoric.Psalms 40:5says Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
The Words are needed to claim promises
Promises are Divine provisions for all God’s children. And there are thousands of such promises in the Bible. But promises remain mere illusions when they are not known and they become worse when they are not claimed. Hence, they are useless just like dividends that are not claimed. But through the knowledge of the Word, we can claim and secure the promises of God.
The Wordis essential tocommune with God appropriately
Every profession hasits unique language. For example, the computer has language, that only recognizes 1 and zero. The Word of God is the only Divine language understood in the realm of heaven.Hence, to be able to commune with the Divine One daily, you need the divine language, the Word of God.
Through the Word of God we overcome
We need the Word of God to overcome challenges and the devil daily. Revelation 12:11 says And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
The Word of God gives assurances
There are many assurances in the bible. We have the assurance that God will resurrect us one day. 1Thessalonians 4:15 says For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.
Hence, daily we keep this hope alive.1 John 3:3 assured,...every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
We are assured of better things to come. 1Corinthians 2:9 says clearly: But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
The Word gives Rest to troubled minds
In 2 Chronicles 32:7-8, King Hezekiah spoke to his people: Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him: With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah. The bible confirmed that...the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah...eventually they survive the attack. In the same vein, if we rest our minds on the Word of God, we can survive any storm in life.
And 2 Thessalonians 1:7 says And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
The Word reminds us of God’s promisesdaily
2 Peter 1: 4 says Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
According to 1 Corinthians 2:9...it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
We derive strength from God’s word daily
Hence, the weak can say I am strong. Joel 3:10 says...let the weak say, I am strong.
The Word Illuminate mind
The word of God makes the wise simple. Psalms 19:7 says The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The Word of God enhances courage
God encouraged Joshua in Joshua 1: 6-7to...Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.
The Word of God brings prosperity
Joshua 1:8 says This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Prosperity and good success come from the Word.
Psalms 1:1-3 further states, Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. True prosperity comes from delighting in the Word of God.
The Word brings healing
God’s word is an active messenger of healing. Psalms 107:20 says He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.
Hence, the Word of God is vigorously active. Hebrew 4:12 says For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
The Word of God clears any doubt
From the Word of God we know who is Jesus (Matthew 3:17; 17:5, John 3:16), where He comes from (John 3:31; 8:23), where He is now (Acts 7:56), the reason while He needed to go (John 16:7).
We are sure He is coming back again (Acts 1:11) and He will take us to the place He prepared for us. John 14:1-3says Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
Hence, in following Jesus Christ, there is no doubt about Him or what He is doing. He is a trusted friend (Proverb 18:24, John 15:15).
The Word of God reminds us about eternal life
John 5: 39 says Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
The Word of God reveals that there is heaven andhell
The case of the rich man and Lazarus is a good example here. Luke 16:22-23 says And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
The word of God brings renewal and transformation of minds
John 17:17 says Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. While Romans 12:2 enjoins And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. The only way to do this is through the true Word of God. Because Psalms 119:9 says Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
The Word produces joy anda sound mind.
Jeremiah 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts. Hence, Psalm 119:103 says How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
The Word serves as the weapon of warfare
The Word of God is the sword of the spirit. Ephesians 6:17 says And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
The Word of God serves as a toolfor teaching and admonition
In the ecclesiastic order, the only authorized tool for instruction is the Word of God. Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 4: 1-4, I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
The Word of God, and not sense knowledge or philosophy or fables, must be preached and thought in Christian gatherings.
Hence,Colossians 3:16 says Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. What you don’t have, you cannot give. Therefore, if the Word dwells in you richly, you will be able to teach and admonish others appropriately.
These among other reasons we have to continually inject the word of God into our hearts daily.
Hence, this book will afford every reader daily remembrance of God’s Word and enhances prayers that are related to the Word. Through, this we can constantly fill our hearts with the Word of God and be reminded of His promises daily.365
